Hi everyone,
I just bought a collectors copy of dragon age and
installed it with no problem but when I go to play the game, the
configuration utility pops up and tries to collect information on my
system. The bar gets almost to the midway point and then I get a
message saying: "Dragon Age: Origins Configuration Utility has
encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience" My computer should be able to run the game, here are the
specifications

Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 3 (2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.090804-1435)
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
System Manufacturer: Dell Inc.
System Model: MXG061
BIOS: Phoenix ROM BIOS PLUS Version 1.10 A07
Processor: Intel® Core™2 CPU         T7400  @ 2.16GHz (2 CPUs)
Memory: 2046MB RAM
Page File: 779MB used, 3159MB available
 Windows Dir: C:\\\\WINDOWS
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
DX Setup Parameters: Not found
 DxDiag Version: 5.03.2600.5512 32bit Unicode

I've
tried to reinstall the game and update my drivers but nothing seems to
be helping, any advice or help I could get would be greatly
appreciated. thanks so much.

You are not the first I have seen report this, but I didn't check back to see if there was an solution ever posted.

The config utility just writes your game settings, all of which are configurable in-game as well. Have you tried just skipping that and launching the game directly? (Either by clicking "Play" from the launcher or by running the \\Dragon Age\\bin_ship\\daorigins.exe executable directly.)

Since all it does is poll your system for what hardware is installed, I wonder what would happen if you ran it in Safe Mode, i.e., reboot Windows in Safe mode and try it then. If that works, that would indicate that you might have some driver conflict going on, but regardless, the game's configurations file would be created. Just a thought. (It's not a likely workaround, mind you, but it wouldn't hurt anything to try.)
