MESSAGE POPULAIRE !

It's confirmed that fem!qunaris only have 4 very short hairstyles by Mike Laidlaw on twitter and that these hairstyles are locked. It's also likely that male qunaris will have 4 hairstyles as well.

Link to stills of every style: http://imgur.com/a/7NrU6

One closer look of the corncrow to bun:

Two human hairstyles for the comparison:

Spoiler

Why this is an issue?

  1. The lack of options! Every hairstyle doesn't even come with every horns. Even the hornless qunari has only those 4 options (Also the hornless qunari has small craters/stubs that bothers some). Other races have 20+ options.
  2. The lack of quality of hair textures and mesh, they look flat and the hairstyles aren't as good quality as other races have. The quality isn't nowhere near quality of otherwise broad CC.
  3. Qunaris in previous DA games, comics and concept art all have white/grey hair that's very different from these options we have now for hairstyles. Even the tarot card for qunari Inquisitor has long white hair.
  4. You can't hide bad hairstyle with helmet since qunari's don't have those.

Here is some requested hairstyles for the qunaris people here have come up that shouldn't have much of clipping issues (they are awesome, thanks guys!):

Qunari hair we didn't get

Qunari hair we didn't get part 2

Qunari hair we didn't get part 3

Qunari hair propositions

More qunari hair propositions

Hair propositions from mods

Many of these styles don't seem like they'd have clipping issues since they aren't long nor they touch the horns. So they should be possible to be animated. These hairstyles are simply gorgerous and it's sad that our qunaris hair as glorious as in these pics.

What people are hoping for from BW regarding the issue?

  1. Patch that would introduce more options
  2. DLC that would introduce more options.
  3. Simply hairstyles that have as good quality as other races and maybe are as long as other races have (shoulder-lenght). Options that have more variety and look better.

Join us on twitter with hashtag #HairForTheQun and tag @bioware with it as well!

Let's keep talking here as well to keep this topic up so it doesn't get forgotten post-release when devs are starting to think of patches and DLC's :)

EDIT: Edited so the post summarizes opinions from the thread towards the issue and is easier to read ^^

Most of the hairstyles weren't shown until the CC was locked, that's just because they weren't ready to show the CC yet (for whatever reason).

Mostly just because they were still being worked on.  It would have done no one any favours to show incomplete long hair only for it to not be in the game at all for release.

I can understand that people are going to be disappointed because they were hoping for something different or more, but as you say concept art is concept art and that's the starting point for coming up with a vision, but there's still a full process of putting it into the game.  Hopefully with systems in place we can do more going forward.

I wonder if you can help with this, Was the decision for the hair based on animation/clipping issues?

I do not know the specific reasons why the qunari options are the ones that they went with.

Would it have been so hard to make a hairstyle like any of these?

Whether or not something is added is going to be a function of technical difficulty crossed with opportunity costs as well as time remaining.  Unfortunately it's something difficult to quantify, and technical difficulty is a bucket for all sorts of things from the raw challenge in performing a task and the unique challenges that come with working with a particular environment and tools and the myriad of challenges that may come.

If something is easy to do and provides value, it tends to get done (easy to do, high reward tasks are easy to prioritize).  Unless the task turns out to be more difficult than expected or something else considered a higher priority takes precedent (both of which are effectively time arguments).

Hair was already being made though, couldn't one of them be at least somewhat attractive? Every one of them is straight up awful. Why was the facial modeling so detailed and had so much effort put into it and the hair such an afterthought? :(

What do you mean by "hair was already being made" though?  Like, the hair options for the other races?

Like Kallen said, the Qunari female got hair, someone modeled hair for her, it just looks horrible and the chosen styles are not only awful but nearly identical. Some of the mockups I posted (the last one in particular) wouldn't have taken any more effort than what ended up actually being made.

So you feel it was an aesthetic choice then?  Just making sure I understand your perspective.

Allan has been nice enough to post some in the other thread.

http://forum.bioware...them/?bioware=1

Shall I merge the threads?  I don't know if we need two of these open.

How is it sad? Bioware makes a bit more money, and the people who really want more variety in hairstyles (like me) get what they want.

It seems like a win-win to me.

Optics would likely be the biggest issue.  Some people would conclude that they were intentionally not put in the game so we could sell them as DLC and what have you.

I'm no industry expert but it seems like that argument could be applied to (and has been applied to) DLC as a whole...

Besides Bioware has released costume packs before. I don't see this as much different.

The argument is applied to DLC as a whole, almost all the time (including our costume packs).  You can see it almost anywhere you go where DLC exists.

I'm not necessarily saying it's a good reason (I don't think it is most of the time), but there will be people that rage because they'd be buying something they feel should have been in the game from the start.

They could use horn styles already developed, and thus no extra work other than adding the new hairstyles.

It's also possible that the horns and hair were both allocated from the same bucket of zots.  That is, time spent on the hair would've meant less time spent on the horns.

But in that case surely you could've given us less horn variations (I mean a lot of them are broken/fixed variations) and more hair?

It didn't have to be so lopsided in favor of one. A more equal amount of hairstyle choices and horn choices would've been fine with me =/

That would have been preferable. I would much rather have only 3-4 horn styles and some hair that actually look like hair than 20 horn options on a bald, spraypainted, or blobbed on head.

Of course, you're not happy with the hair and you really want better hair, so it's a compromise you would have been willing to make.

It looks to me like the aesthetic choice wasn't so much in the hair styles provided, but rather that the focus was more on the horns (for better or worse... I do know some that really like the horn variation).  Maybe we made the wrong call with the horn variations?  I doubt I'll ever truly *know* the answer to that unfortunately.

Those horns were given lot more love though <_<

I think the time forthe qunari hair should been taken anywhere else and put to that hair. Less horn options, less make-up, maybe take something away from other races since they have lot more stuff than qunari (more hairstyles and also tattoos, and helms!). I think the hair shouldnt be breaking point when chosing what race to play.

I agree.  Having no visibility into the decision making process, I think it's fair to say that the horns were the focus for the Qunari customization.

Unfortunately I'm not privy to the decision making process so I can't really state with any authority as to whether or not "taking effort away from other places" would make sense given their cirucmstances.

Personally I think it's pretty funny how female Adaar was looking like the #1 most popular inquisitor choice

I think it's important to not draw too much conclusions from the things that you see on a place like this.  I'd be very, very surprised if the most popular choice is not human, and at no point during development did that change despite people expressing an enthusiasm for other races.

You mean those straggly tufts around their ears and neck? Ah. I guess I missed those.

I actually needed to google this.  I certainly didn't remember the Arishok having hair XD

But he's on the box....

I had to google THAT now too.  Evidently I don't remember the back of the boxart either.  Honestly I don't know if I've ever seen it beyond a passing glance.

When I think of Arishok I think of this and yes, now that people point out he has hair I can see it.  But I cannot recall if I ever noticed before or if I just don't remember.

Anyway Allan would a hair dlc entwined with something like the black emporium be possible? Just asking.

I'm not sure to be honest.  Sorry.  It's something I can suggest, but I have no visibility on time requirements or anything like that so I certainly cannot promise anything.

Just you suggesting it would suffice ^_^ just want to make sure the idea is out there even if its not acted on.

I would be surprised if people like Mike haven't already been bombarded with it.  Haha.

When I think of the Arishok I always think of the AWESOME CGI Trailer...where he has really long hair. :-P

That is true.  Though I've long since distanced CGI vids from what we actually see in games haha.  I find them fun for building up enthusiasm but are like the last thing on my mind when analyzing what is in a game setting! :P

Hey guys,

We've heard you, and It's awesome that you're so passionate about your future Inquisitors. We'll be shipping with the horn and hair options we have now. We may look into this post release but no guarantees.

gotta agree... first thing i did when i saw it this morning was tweet him. no response, but i imagine he's aware of the qunari hair issue.

Just as a heads up, Mike rarely responds to me when I tweet him.  I wouldn't read much into a lack of response.

In fact I can only recall one time when Mike responded to me directly, and it was a retweet of something I said to him so it could be argued he didn't actually respond to me.

I'm not sure if I agree with the size of the issue.

But I respect and understand peoples' concerns,

so good luck with raising the profile of the matter - I hope it works out.

EDIT:

EA marketing may indeed issue edicts over not getting into fan issues within a certain period of launch.

The devs have in the past spoken of 'getting permission' to say things...

More just that it's Saturday and I'm at work testing builds as we prepare for submission.  I am reading this thread because they gave me some food and I'm taking a small break.
