Actually now that I'm thinking of it...didn't the hair in KOTOR move? I remember it swaying side to side a bit.
trololol.

Ok guys.
Here's a question:
WHAT do the mods do to avoid clipping? Seriously. I've seen some of the modded hair and it is super long. What do the mods do to avoid clipping??
Nothing? Usually the hair would float over where much light armor would settle.
I was particularly fond of my femelf looking like this

Follow up question:
Why can't Bioware do this?
Additional follow up question:
If mods don't do a thing to avoid clipping, and modded long hair is obviously very popular in spite of clipping, then why does Bioware care about clipping? Seems like fans want the hair regardless of clipping issues...

David Gaider and Ask a Game Dev offer insight on this:
http://dgaider.tumbl...haracter-design
Short answer:
Developers are under constraints such as scheduling, certification, time, technical and performance, among others. Modders work at their own pace under entirely different circumstances. Developers work under a higher standard than modders. David Gaider opines about clipping: "I’ve noted, when it comes to hair mods, that it’s not always that mods are the best that things can be but rather that mods have a lower bar for quality expectation — meaning that, if what you’re really interested in is new hairstyles for your character, you’re unlikely to mind things like awkward hair animation or clipping very much.
That’s not going to be true for the fanbase at large — although, if I’m completely honest, I think the people who are most concerned about things like clipping are, in fact, our own artists and animators. I imagine it’s tied up in their (understandable and justified) pride in their own work, but I really doubt there’s any fan who worries about clipping as much as they do. To an almost paranoid degree, actually."

Probably because people would give them crap for the clipping and they unlike the mod creators are paid for their work.
I perfectly understand them wanting to avoid perfectly avoidable clipping for the most part. It doesn't look very professional.
That said avoiding it completely like it's the devil is sometimes unnecessary. If the femqunari's hair is a result of a fear of clipping they went way too far in the "make sure it's short" territory.

A developer is held to higher standards than a fan who mods as a hobby.
How can you argue that it isn't important?
Because I'm arguing that it's silly and understand both perspectives. Do you have a point? Or do you want more shampoo with that conditioner?

Hm.
Ok. Fair enough. At least folks gave me answers.
But guys... I can't stop giggling. Reading about devs being like, "The challenges/mysteries of designing video game hair!" and I believe them! I bet it is very hard. It's like this difficult, weird thing that everyone wants in a game but it just never pans out, especially in Bioware games.
But then I realize we sent a robot to Mars.

Yeah. REAL paranoid. So paranoid that aesthetics just fart themselves straight out the window.
I didn't except qunari to have long hair as in concept art but I excepted their hairstyles to be same quality and lenght as other races have. BW didn't have to animate helmets to qunaris so I don't understand why they couldn't do better hairstyles. All they needed to do was good-looking short hair and up-do's like buns but they obviously failed with that. Qunari hair just looks flat and simply not good. It's nowhere near what we are used of seeing qunaris with in both previous games and concept art.
I'm not buying: it's too hard to animate! Bioware isn't small or new company. They managed to animate shoulder-lenght hair with good quality to other races. There simply is no excuse other than that they didn't want to give proper time to qunari's hair.

Yeah hair so lovely...so hard to animate ![]()

XD if the reason for those hairstyles is because of fears of clipping with the horns I'd find myself inclined to agree. I'm really hoping it was for another reason.
Fear of clipping but no fear of how well those styles would be received =/ nope really really hoping that's not the reason.

...I actually like the bun hairstyle. :x
But he's on the box....
I had to google THAT now too. Evidently I don't remember the back of the boxart either. Honestly I don't know if I've ever seen it beyond a passing glance.
When I think of Arishok I think of this and yes, now that people point out he has hair I can see it. But I cannot recall if I ever noticed before or if I just don't remember.

True. And I wasn't expecting long luxurious hair either. I was expecting something to touch the shoulder at best. And I was more so hoping for a Lagertha style battle hairdo - with more volume on top.

It's probably a combination of clipping and time

It'd be fine for me if it wasn't so flat looking =/ Give it some thickness!

True. But we couldn't even get a anora like bun?

...I actually like the bun hairstyle. :x
If the texture of that one was fixed and it was given a bit more volume, it'd be better. It just looks like a helmet to me. :/
Gonna laugh if it turns out there are actually more hair options and all of this is a waste lol

Allan, while we have your attention, tell everyone at Bioware we will bribe them with money to add in better hair options (via DLC). If that doesn't work, maybe there are :ahem: other things we can do for them.... ::awkward wink::: (kidding)
Gonna laugh if it turns out there are actually more hair options and all of this is a waste lol

lmfao
"How many devs do I gotta blow twitter to get better hairstyles?"
We're starting to wander into the realm of inappropriate here.

So they just want to outrage fans by lying that what we saw was what we get? That doesn't seem very nice ^^;
