Dragons Dogma is a great example on how one could make money off of additions to character creation.

However, that being said. I personally am strongly against the practice of nickling and diming customers for something as small as a handful of hair styles or an armor set the way Dragons Dogma does.

I think if Bioware did choose to give us more hair styles (and beard styles and tattoos and scars, and more customization in CC, since I've seen other threads about options - or lack of), it would be more realistic to do it as apart of a patch update? (Take a page out of Bethesda's book in patching in additional content for free) Of course, EA might not go with the idea of free content, at which case ya, sure, add new CC options as apart of 10$ DLC that they already where going to release.

Hell, a Character Customization Pack, with Armor, Weapons, Scars, Breads and Hair? Maybe a few other things? I could see paying a few dollars to have more options.

It's EA. If they decide to add new hairstyles they're gonna charge us for it. As they will with pretty much anything they add other then bugfixes.

Well I for one know that it would take time and effort to make additional hair options, so I would willingly pay for more options. I think it's a win-win, as it's already been pointed out. :)

As long as it's 5-10 dollars I'd probably pay for it, assuming there was a decent selection and they worked for all races. Anything more then 10 and I don't consider it to be worth it.

If a couple of longer hairstyles were added, how thoroughly would they have to be tested? Because it could mean going through every cutscene featuring the Inquisitor multiple times with each armor type, filing bug reports on any clipping, animation or texture issues present in those scenes, resolving the bugs by re-designing the hairstyles and then going through every cutscene again to test for any new bugs. That cycle would then have to be repeated until the number of bugs was sufficiently low. That's not to mention that each design iteration would need concept art, feedback from the design team, with possibly multiple subsequent design changes reflecting that feedback. Then it would need to be modelled in-game with more feedback and more subsequent design changes.

If the hair choices provided are approximately the same or of similar shape and length to those that already exist for other races, then that work has largely been done. It's just a matter of creating or tweaking meshes. For short and medium hairs, there is practically no chance of collision unless qunari apparel for some reason significantly differs from that of other races, which I don't think is likely.

For instance, adding a bun or a ponytail will primarily take up space behind the horns, and that region must have already been tested for collisions for the horns themselves. I think you're imagining the case where people are demanding extremely long and complicated styles, whereas that is simply not so. Many would be happy with the addition of a few shorter or medium length styles.

They could call it Character Extras and throw in a Mirror of Transformation.

C'mon, clipping sometimes is just hilarious! :D

Why deprive us of the joys of clipping?

Don't tell them you'll buy it (I'd rather spend $30 on a 20+ hr DLC campaign). Don't demand that it gets sloppily shoved in game at the last second. Organize and politely request for a patch. In the CC demo Mike and Cameron said they planned to patch in a few things here and there that couldn't make the cut before release (like face codes and such). I have a feeling that DA:I will be supported for a long while after launch (kind of like Skyrim). Anyway just be polite and persistent about it.

I Keep seeing people say they will pay like $20 or more.... and here I an thinking $5... maybe 10, if there's a lot of options....

Personally, for me it's more a case of supporting BioWare and convincing them where their efforts should be going, rather than what the DLC would be worth.

So... Um. I kinda drew some more hair... Sorry.

Qunari Hair We Didn't Get - Part 3!

NmFeGeq.png

I googled corn rows and there are SO many different kinds... I have no idea how people have the patience to get the more intricate ones done... I barely have the patience to do a rope braid most days, and that's like the easiest braid ever.

Some (tiny bit) curly hairs at the top, cause I realized I hadn't actually done any curly hair.

The bottom right looks good imo, similar to what I was imagining. The left one is hideous don't look at it.

Also Flemeth hair, because if I had qunari horns I would totally try doing that at least once.

So, I know some folks are going to jump straight down my throat for "going there" by saying this, but I wonder if the devs hit that proverbial glass ceiling on resources because they implemented superfluous fluff elsewhere that has nothing to do with your single player experience.

*cough* multiplayer *cough*

Well they chose to spend time for qunari hair somewhere else it seems. Personally my characters looks is very important when playing so in my point of view it really seems like they neglected CC of qunaris too much, they should have spend more time to it since it's already problem to many people. I think we are supposed to be amazed of CC and the other parts of it are great but the hair options currently are just so underwhelming..

It also shows why cell shading is awesome as a graphics style. But that's unrelated.

I'll be honest in that when they announced multiplayer, my heart dropped. And no matter how much they insisted it wouldn't impact the single player experience, I can't imagine it didn't deduct from SP resources in some capacity. Not after reading David Gaider's post about resources and how if you want to have A, B, and C - then you have to sacrifice D and E. Or something like that.

We never had multiplayer in the previous dragon age games. Implementing it had to affect a number of things and I cringe to find out what those are. (I'm already cringing at the qunari hair.)

It's understandable to be worried about it

But they were given two separate budgets

This could have easily been fixed by converting hair from other races and adding it in for qunari, scaling where it would clip otherwise and part the hair around the horns. A modder could have done it easily enough, but there's no hope for that now.

I will be sticking with human/elf then. Those hairstyles leave a lot to be desired and I really hope they manage to patch more in. :/

I think multiplayer is a stupid thing for DA. It worked for ME, but ME was a shooter.

And even then. I've always believed that when it comes to RPGs features like multiplayer should come last. As a thing you add once the SP is good and soild and has all the features and items and what have you in it.

However theres this consent push for MP (which I dont really understand) in these types of games. And its not even couch-co'op.

I truly think if a game like this is going to implement MP that the core game should be as close to perfect as possible (including the CC), and then start working on the MP, because if you run out of resources then MP can be scrapped and the game is still complete.

Modders can do easier because they have all the time in the world to work on it, developers work on a timed schedule

I had to google THAT now too.  Evidently I don't remember the back of the boxart either.  Honestly I don't know if I've ever seen it beyond a passing glance.

When I think of Arishok I think of this and yes, now that people point out he has hair I can see it.  But I cannot recall if I ever noticed before or if I just don't remember.

Allan seems to be onto something here. Qunari horns are way more prominent than any hair they may or may not have, and it makes sense that they would favor styles that are more practical than pretty. I have no idea whether that's what was intended with the available hairstyles, but it's still brilliant.

The styles may make sense, but the lack of hair quality is simply inconceivable.

I don't know if Bioware gets a fixed amount of time and money to do everything they can with it, but in other areas of software it doesn't work like that. Requirements are assessed and billed independently. So if you plan on multiplayer you need X money and time - if you decide you're not gonna make multiplayer, then you get less money and time. You cannot "use money that would have gone into multiplayer" to make more game assets or vice versa because each has its own budget.

Ah, so you're the one doing all those hair drawings!

Regardless of how effective I think this campaign will be, I have to say, you have some major talent!  I've really enjoyed the reposts I've seen of your concepts.  Great stuff!
