Effort DID go into the CC though, the lack of qunari hair variants doesn't undo all the other myriad of options the CC has (waaaaaaaaaaaay more than previous CCs).

My phrasing was incorrect, I specifically meant CC hair options. Sorry for the confusion.

But every game, hair is always mentioned - yes? So to let this go unfixed to me is just so... jarring.

Honestly, in my opinion, if you compare the hair textures of the other races to the skin textures, there is no comparison. Even though the hair is nicer texture wise than Qunari hair, and has more variants, it doesn't hold up to the skin textures. What does hold up, however, are the horns. Which are immaculately textured and blend perfectly into the skin.

I'd rather have badass horns of all different shapes and sizes that look fantastic than fewer horns for some hair that won't be up to snuff either way.

Not all the horns will please all the people. There are only 2 or 3 that I like, which is a decent amount. But zero hairstyles appeal to me. And that's zero out of four. If I was unhappy with ten (well varied) hair options then that'd be on me.

My priority is hair - with any character. It's part of the reason I don't have much interest in playing an Argonian in elder scrolls. But that's ok because I've never seen an Argonian with gorgeous hair (and that would look hilarious since they're NOT mammalian/simian).

But qunari are based on simian/mammalian structure - very close to humans, dwarves. and elves. All four groups have fingers, toes, nipples, facial hair, genitalia, buttocks, knees, elbows, and skin in the same places. And I've seen countless qunari with acceptable/attractive hair on their heads.

Elves are unique in that they have pointed ears. It's so unique that the people of Thedas disparage them for having "knife ears." I'd be pretty peeved if they gave me dozens of ear options/ear jewelry but only four sh*tty hairstyles. (My point? The elves' hairstyles ARE up to snuff.)

The truth is that we should have a fair amount of hair vs horns. Maybe they could've scrapped some of those broken horn options (we have plenty). Or scrapped a studded or nonstudded pair of horns.

Horns are great but I don't think Inquisitor's head will look good only with good horns. It needs to have some good hair as well. At the moment I'm very worried if I will be able to make good looking qunaris with the options I have. I just hope I can do decent looking so I don't have to abandon the race that I have been most eager to play.

Welp, I just wrote Mike Laidlaw on twitter about the chance of more qunari hair in future patches/DLC ... let's see how/if he responds.

(...)

They had the cash, but made some asslancing decision to allocate a portion of it to multiplayer when they should have solely focused on the core, vanilla game.

Someone had to give a department that money. Someone in charge of the full budget.

Again, I cannot speak with authority about Bioware budgets. But in software, you don't get a total amount which you allocate as you see fit. Likely single player and multiplayer have their own independent budgets. If you don't make multiplayer, then you don't get the multiplayer money at all.

In your typical application you have areas like admin panel, dashboard, payments... each one budgeted independently. So if you assign a week of each (for example), and then it is decided one of the areas isn't needed, the deadline is reduced by a week. Normally you are not able to say "I will dedicate one day to this area and 13 days to this other area even though it was agreed each one would take a week".

It would be very strange to me if what you're saying happened in reality. But we are just speculating anyway, there is no way to know.

Damn, where was my head at?

I've brought free pitchforks and torches with me. No need to worry about returning them since i have a surplus of supplies. There's rotten fruit too and don't bother asking about rocks because they're everywhere m'kay.

I'm pretty sad we don't get any hairstyles for the Qunari. I'm okay with short hair... but not only 4 styles of short hair. I was atleast expecting what they had in DA2.

I'm fine with hair at the shoulder or short hair. I don't need hair to be long to be cool looking. I usually go for more punk rock styles (but that teeny weeny mohawk is tolerable at best, plus there's no shaved stubble or fringe) and I was hoping the qunari would have some funky Tank Girl type of cuts. Shaved, hawked, braided, or all those three combined. And bangs... my god... can't we have some bangs?

edit: Also the mohawk would be fine with me but it doesn't come with the THREE horn styles I want. Dumb.

I'm rather partial to the dred-ponytail one of the creative members drew up.

Also, damn, it seems like the biggest complaint is related to hair and beard choices thus far

Exactly.

Though, to be fair, all I was expecting was hair around the same quality as humans in DAI. Ugh. I can't lie, it's bothering the heck out of me.

I'm also fine with shoulder length hair or shorter, to me shoulder length is long. I expected braids or buns or something, but this?

I think I just had my heart set on more elaborate hawks with braids, texture, and volume.

So more bad news for hair - in general for all races - you cannot change your eyebrow color. It changes with the hair color. This likely doesn't bug some folks but I tend to go for white hair and dark skin. White eyebrows will look ridiculous. (I usually make them darker...)

edit: at least that's what Laidlaw said on his twitter a bit ago. But I swore in the CC demo they had different colors. :sigh:

Me too! Major confusion. If I go with a redhead I usually change the beard/eyebrows to a lighter brown because I hate red eyebrows (in game. No offense meant to any reds-heads!)

To me it almost looked like there was a white-haired (or VERY light gray) option with dark brows and then one with white brows? I'd have to watch it again.

...I actually downloaded a mod to give Fenris white eyebrows because his dark brows with white hair bugged me...

EDIT: I made a short animated .gif of the "gray" hair color options:

If you guys spent half the time you do marketing and posting on gaming forums into just getting a completely random animator or whatever to give you long hair, you could have 10 hairstyles. Alternatively, if you had made 4 hairstyles you could of just done 2 short and 2 long.

It's really not that hard. I'd be 50 dollars someone has already done and is willing to give it to you for free. Do developers like the ones who make Aion or whatever have some kind of magic elixir pill that you guys don't have that allows them to make things at 3000x the rate?

I think the thing that would've fixed this whole thing is to make hair and horns on a different slider...and give maybe 8-10 of each option. :/

For example:

Back swept horns, ram horns, longer thinner horns, left horn shaved, right horn shaved, both horns shaved, and then four different types of decorated horns.

Then cornrows, bun, medium hair (ear length), ponytail, shoulder-length hair, etc, all pulled back to avoid clipping

Them being on the same slider gives me the feeling that there was an issue with the horns and hair being completely separate

What makes this surprising to me is that during the CC demo, Mike and Cameron pointed out how if you changed the size of, say, your character's ears or nose, hair and facial hair would also move and adjust to fit. Yet... that wouldn't work for horns? Hmm.

I'd even be okay with them being on the same slider if the 4 hair styles came with each horn style.

If there was an individual hair style paired with each individual horn style that would be okay too.

But I just can't understand this arbitrary marking of which horn style gets paired with which 3 hair styles.

After reading over the thread, and thinking about it myself, there is only two major complaints I have about the hair/head options.  The lack of hairstyles isn't fun, but that isn't the issue for me.

First, the textures look like utter crap, especially when compared to, say, the dwarven female.  It's like they turned down the scalar (intensity) on any sort of highlights, then made the hair and the highlights a universal clay color.  That's just awful, and I noticed that the Qunari mage from E3 has terrible textures for her hair too.  Only hers looks like white clay.

I'd like to formally request from the dev team to either improve this before release, or to patch the texture issue as soon as feasible.  I'd be willing to pay $5-$10 for more hair and clothing options, but not to fix that hair texture.

The second is that oft-mentioned almost cancerous looking black spots where the horns should be if they cut them off/was born hornless.  That's jarringly bad.  I've seen it on the guys and it blends in a little more naturally with the rest of the scalp.   As it stands, the default greyish color of the qunari makes those really stand out, and it's distracting.  I would like it if they cleaned that up some more too, so it blends in a little better with the rest of the scalp.

That's just my two coppers on the subject.
