DA2s problem wasn't balance with healing, it was that it failed to explain the mechanic. You had people potion hoard because they didn't know they didn't have to hoard.

True.

I only really started using healing potions to their full potential because I booted Anders out in act 2 and had to adjust.

Wynne. Did not. Ever. Heal. Not once. Even when I cleaned out her other tactics and only told her to heal, Wynne would not heal. In that case, she would run up to the enemy and hit them with her staff. That's it. The heal spells were never in cooldown because they were never used.

I'm getting very tired of people telling me my experiences didn't happen.

That's a shame, given that I'm rather sure Wynne doesn't run up to enemies and hit them with her staff. Seriously, I don't think that's a thing that she even can do.

That's what she did in my game. All right, so it was more 'run up and shoot people at point blank range with her staff' than hitting them, but you get the idea.

Merrill is actually a bad example, while in gameplay she had no healing, she did know healing spells. In the dalish origin she accompanies the warden to stabalize tamlen if found. It is stated she knows a bit of the keepers magic and can help him.

Actually that supports the lore friendly argument to this discussion perfectly.

Merrill was unable to learn the most basic "combat" heal spell but could atune herself to other forms of magical healing.

Our mages also cannot learn basic heal spell but are able to learn a magical group heal focus ability.

I was going to suggest that you may have had her confused with Anders in DA2, because his AI was buggy and he often refused to heal the party... but I guess you are certain of this.

Anyway, are you sure your tactics were set up properly?  Something like... Ally-Health < 75% - Heal ?  If that's what you had, then I guess your game was bugged...

And moving on to something a bit more on-topic, I will just say that the Group Heal Focus power, whatever ranged Revival spell is at the end of the Spirit tree, Revival in general, health potions, regeneration potions, and grenades sound like more than enough healing options to me.  Combined with the numerous ways of avoiding health damage, we should be fine...  I really think Cameron Lee did the game a disservice with his sloppy play in that Twitch demo.  He even said he wasn't really trying and that's why he did so poorly, but I think the fact that he was constantly low on health and then got wiped out is the only thing some people are focusing on... the game is not going to be that hard if we just pay attention and use our abilities wisely.  He didn't and he said as much.

Group Heal, and grenades that restore health/increase health regen.

Revives.

I guess I can't categorically say that never happens, but it's completely at odds with my experience with her, and I've never heard of anything like this before.

And actually crafting potions was very important to substitute for what was basically an emergency button in terms of spell based healing.

We had potions that restored more health, that gave you the old DAO lifeward, that restored health and mana, each on their own cooldown.

We didn't need healing mages, but you don't even know about these alternatives if you don't explore the crafting.

No, I never played with Anders. But yeah, my game is bugged. I've known it ever since I got it, but I can't complain too much: I destroyed my first, completely bug free copy by accident, and EB Games really went out on a limb for me to replace it. Sooo, Wynne becomes a conversation piece and I'm grateful I have game at all.

It's a bug. The original purpose of bringing it up was to point out that running through DA:O with no healing spells can be done, before we got sidetracked into whether or not my issues with Wynne actually happened.

Wynne did whatever her tactics told her to do. If she was buffing rather than healing, either the heals were all in cooldown or you botched the tactics setup.

I was presuming it's the former.Wynne needs other things to do besides heal since there aren't enough heals to keep her active all the time.

That's a shame, given that I'm rather sure Wynne doesn't run up to enemies and hit them with her staff. Seriously, I don't think that's a thing that she even can do.

Or, you know, that my game is bugged.

Like I said. In the post immediately before yours. Twice over, even.

The point is, it is entirely possible to run through DA:O with no healing spells. Now, granted, we had a lot more potions in DA:O (I think I could carry up to 99 health potions, but I could be confusing it with another game) whereas in DAI we will be stuck with eight. And the lack of regenerating health could be an issue. That said, we also have access to tactical cam, allowing us to scout ahead, all the healing options listed by Icy Magebane, plus some extra tanking goodies and CC for the Mages, so that should balance it all out.

I hope.

Nevertheless you fight with the army you have, not the one you wish you have. The game mechanics still fit the lore, which seems to be the issue you have with them.

I just want an in-game explanation for it.

I don't think so. Elfroot is a plant that has remarkable healing properties that can heal in an instant (and be made by non-mages, so they aren't necessarily magical). So you make a grenade that releases a gas or spores into the air of elfroot or whatever that helps instantly heal wounds.

As long as they heal enemies caught in the blast too. Otherwise we are dealing with an intelligent grenade.

anders being the very healy (well known) mage causing like, a great war. other mage's like, threw their hands up in the air and said ''**** it i aint healing, what if i get mistaken for anders!!!'' and went on with their life's raising corpses, and turning enemy's into spiritbombs.

same reason swastika's arent allowed in germany because it reminds them of hitler (even though it was an, what was it ? aztec symbol hinduism, jainism, early christian gravetombs, greek and roman mozaik tiles and norse vikings symbol thing.)

Rawgrim the explanation for why mages you have can't heal is because THEY CAN HEAL. OMG! Nowai! Yup, they can heal, there is a heal spell. The Lore explanation for why mages can heal is because they can heal. That sound? It's the sound of your mind being blown.... also learn to edit your post man you just tripple posted for tiny tiny sentences.

Make sure an NPC tells me this in-game, and its all good.

I think you are missing the point. I was asking for an in-game explanation for why mages can't cast the Heal spell in Dragon Age Inquisition, when mages can do that in DA:O and DA2.

Mindblowning, isn't it?

Now that's a more plausible explanation - spirit healing is bad for your mental health and even worse for your image. Smart mages raise the dead, instead.

Not really, that's all game mechanics and DA2 cast a different heal spell. Both of which are spammy as **** but when it comes to cutscenes and lore its a hard, difficulty to do and time consuming endeavor. The very fact they can do that at all was already lore breaking, that's been established, you apparently don't give 2 shits about how the past 2 games have been lore breaking.

None of that matters though it was changed for gameplay purposes. Get over it.

-edit-

Also mages still have a powerful heal spell in DAI. So, again, mages can heal. Hell one page back a BioWarian even stated healing isn't ignored in the story so.. more mages healing.

Actually it isn't hard at all. You look at the lore, and what works based on that, and then design combat and\or cutscenes.

The previous two games have been lorebreaking too, sure. But if you look carefully at the board and the topic, you will notice what is being discussed here is Healing in Dragon Age Inquisition. Not how this and that in other games broke the lore so...Just staying on topic.

No need to get all emo over it.

Or the tears in the Veil is affecting healing spells. That would be a good explanation too.

The grenade might be enchanted to only heal those not hostile to the player/person who threw it.
