Didn't realise how powerful Resurgence was either. Love these focus abilities are the bomb.

Wow. Magic Damage = 300% Weapon Damage, 1000% Wepaon Damage

It's one thing for weapon/staff, whatever, to aid me in damage dealing/spell casting (D&D), but to make the magic damage dependent on it completely... ehh ok.

Yeah, character stats matters soooo much now. No wonder we can't distribute them manually. Why bother to do something meaningless.

I take it you'll be giving the game a pass, oh well you're choice.

Life ward needs to be timed correctly...but put that on a front line fighter that's near death and you've ensured them staying in the fight for a bit longer. I could post more shots of various magic trees, but since this thread is about healing I focused on those.

Likely going to stick that on Dorian or Solas

If by not praising every single bit of the game mechanics that I find stupid = I'am giving the game pass, oh well, your choice. You can think whatever you want.

I am not asking for praise I just notice a lot of negativity for a game that has not yet been released. If I don't find a game appealing for whatever reason I give it a pass, otherwise I reserve judgement until its actually released like as we all should do here.

It's the same mechanic as in Diablo 3, which also got a lot of criticism from Diablo fans.

Bioware can't both remove the ability of mages to magically heal the party instantly but continue to allow chemicals to magically heal the party instantly. That creates a huge plot hole that tears any sense of believeability or immersion away from the game.

It actually fits with the lore - health potions are much more readily available and widely used in Thedas than healing magic is. I'm not sure if health potions are actually herbal (I think they are herbal but only 90% and maybe different health potions have different qualities) or if they're also imbued with magic, but even if imbued with magic, they would be mass produce-able. Most mages can't learn healing spells in-lore and most that do require a substantial amount of energy during and recovery after major healing spells, can't cast them when injured, etc. (A character in one of the novels who's gifted with spirits and healing, for example, can't heal himself when injured and one mage mentions, "Nobody remembered to grab a healing potion!"

There are actually still "healing" spells in the game - or at least one, on one specialization, that requires Focus. This makes sense with lore and is lore-consistent. Magical healing is rare. This was revealed even in DAO (though it didn't mesh with game mechanics, of course) - there's an elf at the alienage, for example, who was crippled in a work accident and the foreman wasn't going to use magical healing on him at the time because it was too expensive for an elf. That's the first mention of healing magic in speech I encountered in the DA world.

WTF? AOE heal grenades? I guess Bioware said **** immersion or trying to maintain a cohesive, consistent and logical game world. SO they don't allow magical healing which is clearly the only type of healing that could actually heal someone, but they allow grenades to heal magically? That's just beyond stupid.

Why is magical healing the only type of healing that could actually heal someone?

I'm not sure if I'm crazy about healing grenades myself (we'll see) but potions seem very logical.

Yeah, a little to much IMO.

Yeah, maybe, and hopefully. And healing itself isn't rare, spirithealing is.

No, all magical healing is fairly rare. More mundane healing - potions and bandages and such - is much more common in Thedas.

I'm quite sure that related stats will boost weapon damage.

In case of Diablo 3 I can somehow understand that decision (doesn't mean I like it) because they never hid the fact it is going to be more mutliplayer oriented game.

But in single player I hate this whole stats/damage from gear thing. Back then I treid to give Sacred the chance, I played both vanilla and expansion but never finished either of them. Then I did that again with Sacred 2, it didn't end well.

I don't need to play the game to know I don't like this kind of mechanics, and I never will.

Why would tying damage output to weapon rather than stats be related to multiplayer, rather than due to the fact that Diablo is all about aquiring loot?

Not arguing with you on this, just not sure I see then mechanics link.

Isn't there a separate stat for this kind of things - "Damage" "attack" etc ?

When it says Weapon Damage I think it means the base wepaon damage, unmodified.

But I may be wrong. I hope I am.

@Nohvarr

Thanks for the indepth post on the mage trees.  I knew I'd be making a mage for my first run of Inquisition (that was a given) but I'll definitely be following those power trees.

"Acquiring the loot" and "gear based" are mechaincs more common in mutiplayer/MMO games, at least that's how I see it based on my experience with various games.

It drives the economy(something completely meaningless in single player).

And in case of MMOs, it drives people with low patience to buy armors, wepaons and various equipment packs for real cash.

That is my view on this aspect.

Ah, I see where you are coming from now. Not sure I agree that this is the same model being deployed in DA:I but I get what you mean.

It is exactly like that in ME3 MP - you can buy various packs with guns or characters with in-game currency or real cash. Many players who didn't want to invest time, bought packs with real money. DAMP is based on me3mp. So it's very plausible.

Equipment based stat bonuses aren't exclusive to MP.  To some degree gear in DAO and DA2 used it.  Runes, stat boosts, dodge/parry, attack etc.  As your character progresses through the game, the grey iron updates to veridium, silverite, dragon bone etc.  and so does it's armor value and any stat bonuses it may have, including the number of runes you can attach to it (if a weapon).

I realize that it's more 'gear intensive' now, but they haven't eliminated ability stats altogether (like WoW does), it's just tied more the the logical skills a mage/rogue/warrior would have.  Now, don't fly off the handle at me, I'm not arguing that it isn't to a large extent gear based.  But it's not that weird a concept.  Even for Dragon Age.

How many people bought all those DLC's for just gear in DA2?  *Raises hand*.  With the "gear evolves mod" I was able to put what I wanted on Hawke and have her rock the same look the entire game (once she reached Gamlen's house), as the bonuses rose with her as she leveled.

With The Winter Forge mod in Origins, I was able to reforge and put my crew in any items I wanted with any look I wanted in the whole game of Origins.  I reforged Alistair's starting armor into heavy ceremonial armor once and just kept him in that, just upgrading the stats as the game progressed.

I actually kind of look forward to crafting some bad ass looking armor for my Inquisitor and her crew--professions and crafting in games is a passion of mine, and one of the things I am actually looking forward to doing in Inquisition.  Just wondering if it's upgradeable or if I have to craft new stuff as I progress through the game.

It's going to be interesting to see what the biggest complainers have to say once the game comes out and turns out that the new mechanics are pretty awesome, and simple - and probably overpowered to make up for the lack of healing spell.

I think it's more of an issue that they wanted their inquisitor to be a healing mage and they had that option removed? Until I play this game and beat it, I'm not making any positive or negative comments on the new mechanics, it's silly to do so. Those who have EA 6 Hour access could probably answer this thread with a yay or nay (which I think some may have, I can't see pictures from the work internet, it blocks most hosting sites).

"Didn't realise how powerful focus was" = Pleasantly surprised that healing exists and is amazing imo.

Knowing you're not going to like something, based on your previous experiences with said thing is not silly at all. Saying that it is silly to say that is ... silly.

Common punch me in the face, maybe I am going to like it this time. I never experienced that, from you, so me saying I don't like it is silly. Ok .Logical.

I was more stating that for me to make that decision was silly, but if you want to take it as a personal attack, go right a head. (but you are mistaken.)

Resurgence is a Knight-Enchanter spell; I doubt either can cast it.
