Helloooo. So I've been thinking about how the Inquisition is bringing together a vast variety of races and organizations together and I'm interested in hearing how you think certain companions might react to one another and if they might clash somewhat.

So far this is what i've got:

Iron Bull will probably be uneasy with mages in general since he still (loosely) follows the Qun, even though he's questioning it. Also his relationship with Dorian will especially be interesting because even though they are both outcasts in they cultures, Dorian is Tevinter and Iron Bull Qunari. I also think that Varric might not initially like Iron Bull, because of what he saw the Qunari do in Dragon Age 2 (sacking Kirkwall, etc...). Also, I don't see Iron Bull and Cass liking each other (Chantry and Qun?).

I'm thinking Vivienne will befriend Dorian in a sort of competitive friendship, because even though some of their opinions might be different, they definitely have to respect each other because of their aptitude at political maneuvering and their skills as mages. HOWEVER, Orlesians typically look down on elves, seeing them as servants which or pretty much glorified slaves, so I think that'll make interesting dialogue between Vivienne and Sera/Solas.

Varric and Sera bonding over marksman stories?

We know Sera refers to Cole as ''it'' and refuses to talk to him, but I'm thinking he might find some kind of surrogate father in.... Blackwall? Grey Wardens historically have been known to be flexible about dealing with demons/spirits. I'm also looking forward to the conversations he'll have with the party's mages since they most likely will try to understand what he is.

Finally, i know Solas ISNT Dalish and that he's some kind of hermit, but i don't see him and Dorian taking a liking to each other, with the Tevinters hunting down the Dalish. Who knows, maybe the reason Solas only romances elves (female elves, to be precise), is because he's a racist.

interesting thoughts, i'd say they are very likely to happen between those characters.

I don't think Solas is a racist. XD

I think he'll be fond of people who are serious and thoughtful, even if they disagree with him. I'm guessing esp with Cass's crisis of faith, they'll get along and have good convos. Not like BFF, but find each other intellectually satisfying and have great respect.

I get the suspicion that Dorian and Vivienne will eventually butt heads. Although they apparently banter back and forth with each other, they do seem to also have opposing philosophies regarding their magic.

I think it will be fascinating to hear what Viv thinks of the Tevinter system. That will definitely give a lot of insight into who she is, IMO.

Like she's ambitious, so since she's presumably opposed to it, what does that mean about her view of the role of mages and magic? She can't just be a climber/power seeker, because no way a Grand Enchanter is on the same level as a Magister.

So yes, I very much look forward to those conversations.

Me toooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo :D

haha i wish i could have an all mage party but having a rogue is pretty mandatory and we still dont know if the Knight Enchanter spec is a Tank mage.

For that reason, even though i prefer mages and always played mages, I'm gonna play a rogue so i can bring a tank along and VIV AND DORIAN. I ship them sorta, but im gonna be the one gettin da booty too bad for vivienne i guess

I enjoyed some of the mutual dislike between my companions. I always took Fenris or Anders along with Merrill so at least someone in the story would say what I was thinking even if I didn't get the option.

I did chart like this while ago, it's based on writers' interviews:

ScreenShot322_zps5f8b6801.jpg

Green: They get along great and are friends.

Yellow: Some difference in opinion but they respect each other.

Red: Conflict, they don't get along.

EDIT: Couple blocks were missing so I fixed those.

That was very instructive, Panda. Thanks!

What I want to know is if there will be character development in companion relationships too. And I'm not talking only about romance.

It would be neat if a relationship started on the wrong foot and evolved into respect if not friendship, or the other way around. Events could lead to companions becoming hostile to each other.

I'm still curious how the banter input mechanic is going to work. Does the Inquisitor make an automatic comment, or do we choose?

Perhaps it's because the chart is quite old information, and haven't been update since then I mean just look at Blackwall slot which is empty.

I personally liked in Origins how Morrigan was troubled by something Wynne said about her being untested or something and brought it up into a later banter, and then the conversation ends like this:

  • Wynne: Is it? It is by no means perfect, I agree, but consider the alternative. At least other mages can understand our struggle. We can help each other.
  • Morrigan: It is... something to consider, I suppose.
  • Wynne: Well that's certainly something.

Now when talking about conflicts between companions I always thought there will be scene when certain companions fighting each other similar to Legion vs Tali or Miranda vs Jack in Mass Effect 2, and the player can intervene and take side or persuade/intimidate both to stand down and fall back in line. The main theme of DAI is about leadership after all it's up to the Inquisitor to keep everyone together.

The only thing I'm really worried about when it comes to this is if Cole will stand up for himself if things get heated between the other companions. I swear to the Old Gods that if I have to put up with another Merrill like situation without the option to b****slap someone I'll freak out.

I have to admit, while I loved that the conflicts reached a head with the people involved going at each other, I found the fact that you could just talk them out of it a bit of a cop-out. Make us chose. Make there be consequences. Don't have a "everything works out right" option...

Still...thank you for making this chart. I also forgot some companion relationship with each other.

I also hope it wouldn't come to the Inquisitor use Jedi mind trick force everyone into agreement or at least if there are option to please them both it'll be hard to achieve and require us to do some extra works.

The bolded part - I think we have yet to see something like this, right? Characters who are initially friendly with each other find out they have irreconcilable differences, and things go south from there. And I'm not talking about

"A thought B is pro-Chantry, B told A in simple words that B is anti-Chantry, A and B don't talk to each other"  --  i.e. misunderstanding, B was always anti-Chantry

More like:

"A and B meet for the first time, they gradually build friendly relations. Suddenly something happens, that raises an important issue which was not addressed before, and A and B suddenyl find themselves on the different sides of the conflict"  -- the key is that this difference was not addressed before, and it's different from the situation above in that this issue would not have been addressed in most cases - something less expected (for example, your views on Mage-Templar conflict have more chances to come up in the conversation, rather than, say your opinion on mercy kills - because, how many times do you remember mercy kills and the ethics being a theme for a conversation in DA? Now, count all the times Mage-Templar conflict/mage rights themes appeared)

Or:

"A and B meet build relations, but something happens to A that changes A's worldview which now comes into conflict with B's worldview"  -- again, this difference was non-existent before, the issue only appeared after something happened to A

My opinion, at least.

Pity you can't be a blood mage. That would be a great way to do things - the only want to get your companions to get along is to mind control them.

Actually, didn't Jade Empire do something like that? Been ages since I did a CF playthrough, but I seem to remember being able to effectively mind control your followers into obeying you after you did something rather repulsive.
