Elawin Lavellan (Lawful Evil) (Warrior/Champion) – Raised in a very strict household, Elawin developed a keen respect for Dalish laws and customs, but often found himself seeking ways to use them to his advantage. As a child, he took great pleasure in feigning innocence while manipulating his arrogant but dull-witted older siblings into breaking minor clan laws and secretly arranging for them to be punished later. What began as a simple game eventually turned into something far more sinister as Elawin grew into adulthood and took on the role of one of the clan’s peacekeepers. Renowned for his skill as a hunter, he quickly rose in rank, occassionally relying on manipulation or backstabbing, but always remaining well within the boundaries of the clan’s laws. In doing so, he began to feel a powerful disdain for his less ambitious peers and the intoxicating lure of control. His ruthless dedication to enforcing even minor laws garnered the fear and hatred of many members of the clan. Occasionally he took bribes or favors in exchange for looking the other way, but was careful to do this rarely so that his corruption could never be proven. Although he was unpopular, he commanded respect.
As time passed, Elawin clashed more than once with his hahren and keeper over what he saw as a glaring weakness among his people: their collective lack of motivation to change their lot. For generations they had been wanderers yet not once had the clan attempted to find unclaimed land beyond the borders of the human nations. Held in check by his own strict code and respect for the clan’s traditional power hierarchy, the young hunter grew bitter as the years passed and his suggestions were consistently ignored. Although he had no direct contact with humans, he understood and envied the power they must wield in order to keep the clan fearful and nomadic for hundreds of years.
In spite of these disagreements, and many sleepless nights during which he pondered abandoning the clan, Elawin settled into his role and continued to enjoy his petty games in relative peace, dreaming of the day when he would be eligible to become hahren and forcibly lead the clan to a brighter future. His life took a drastic and unexpected turn, however, when when he was exposed to the magical energies of the Fade. Soon afterward, he found himself called upon by the mysterious and widely feared humans to end a threat to the land, and was given the title of “Inquisitor.” It didn’t take long for Elawin to realize his good fortune. By some random twist of fate, he had been given an immense amount of authority over a powerful race that had terrorized the Dalish for centuries. Vowing not to squander this chance, he re-dedicated himself to physical training so that he would be able to secure and maintain dominion over the group and fend off any who would challenge his rule.
Although the primary focus of this character is dominion over others, he is both loyal and generous (but rarely, if ever, genuinely kind) to subordinates who prove useful and trustworthy. Elawin only respects the strong or clever, which puts him at odds with those among the Inquisition who place value on the protection of the weak. In fact, the only reason he is willing to battle Fade creatures in the first place is to secure his own future and increase his standing in the eyes of those who have power. This philosophy extends even to his former clan. He pities them to an extent, but feels that they have had many chances to escape their fate. He would be more than willing to allow them to serve as soldiers in the Inquisition, but under no circumstances will he freely offer aid. He would care little for their ultimate fate if they refused to follow him, though he feels some responsibility to give them one final chance to see reason.
Elawin's identity as a Dalish elf is a source of constant inner conflict, as he seeks to find some way of balancing the desire to make his people strong with his natural selfishness, cruelty, and disdain for the oppressed. Part of his desire to see the elves gain the respect of other races may be due to pride, as this would directly benefit his own social standing and prove that he does not come from a race of inferiors and weaklings. Directly opposing humanity seems to be an unreasonably risky path and would likely jeopardize his own safety, but if he sees any chance to increase the political and legal standing of elves, he will seize upon it. His personal code compels him to attempt to operate within the bounds of the law rather than participate in revolutionary actions that may weaken his personal safety and financial security, therefore his ability to provide even minor aid to the elves may be severely restricted.
