City Elves are commonly known to eat something called "Salt Chews" all we know is that they have a fishy smell to them, i like to imagine they look like fried fat back, Streakolean.jpgand maybe even taste like it, fried or baked, salty and yet can be seasoned with other spices.

Another interesting thing mentioned on the wiki is that the City Elves sometimes dine on Cat's and Rat's, the rats being called the Rabbit's of the City. Considering how large the rats are in the wilds, and presumably in the city, im quite surprised by this.

They eat actual rats?  Good grief... I know I should also be appalled that they eat cats, but rat meat sounds much worse...

People eat guinea pigs in Peru.  They eat cats and dogs in China.  What people eat varies from culture to culture.

Besides, people eat whatever they can to survive.

Well, I saw a tv show once where people were eating rats... I think that was in India... still sounds pretty gross.

Well, people in India probably think it's appalling that we eat cows in the US.  Like I said: it varies from culture to culture.

I'm not trying to dis anybody's culture, but some animals I just won't eat under any circumstances.  You know how they eat escargot (snails) in France?  Yeah, I find that to be repulsive... I'd rather starve.  That extends to things like lobster too... I'm only stating my opinion, not judging what other people do... what do I care what they eat in India?

I wasn't saying that you were dissing other people's cultures.  I was just trying to say that what's disgusting to someone is delicious to someone else.

But yeah, I think we're getting off-topic now.

Indeed.  I'm glad I learned this about the elves of Thedas though.  Tthe idea that my PC could have grown up eating rat meat makes me kind of glad there is no City Elf background in DA:I.  I guess I'll just headcanon that the CE Warden and any future CE chars are vegetarians...

City Elves are commonly known to eat something called "Salt Chews" all we know is that they have a fishy smell to them,

It's probably dried and salted fish, which was fairly common (especially among the lower classes) in the Middle Ages.

Another interesting thing mentioned on the wiki is that the City Elves sometimes dine on Cat's and Rat's, the rats being called the Rabbit's of the City.

Shianni also says as much to the CE Warden in the game. After you rescue the alienage, she urges you to come over for dinner, and tries to tempt you with her famous "rabbit stew." If you snark that she means rats, she'll say " 'Rabbits of the City.' If that doesn't sound appetizing, you've been away from home too long."

Considering how large the rats are in the wilds, and presumably in the city, im quite surprised by this.

You mean because they're small?

If so: ... Eh. When you're poor, you'll take what you can get.

Most alienages are also shown to have rather cramped, unhygenic conditions. Rats are probably very common. What they lack in size, they likely make up for in numbers.

Enna Lavellan:

I'm going model my first playthrough quizzy on Artemisia from 300: Rise of the empire. Female, blade-rogue dalish who wasn't born to the clans but ended up with them as a child after the murder(and other assorted assorted horrors inflic) of her family. Talented hunter and leader, but harboring fanatic hatred for the human world and thus not really popular with her clan even if her abilities are respected. Going to be...interesting starting with that. I'm sure(hope) the human companions will soften her attitude but for a while its going to suck to be Cullen or (to a lesser extent) Cass (even if i love Cass to bits)

no because they are huge and vicious, and would likely eat shianni before she could kill a few of them, especially since they have no weapons.

The elven servants in the Cousland origin were terrified of rats, but they did make special mention of "large grey ones."  So maybe there are smaller, less violent rats that the City Elves can safely hunt and eat?

How often have you heard of real people being killed and eaten by swarms of rats?

From what I've heard and read, rats are considered vermin and a nuisance in most parts of the world. Dangerous for their diseases, likely their teeth and claws when they get too close, and at worst dangerous to unsupervised babies and small children. But from what I've heard, most rats don't get too close to able-bodied, fully adult people. Rats scurry around, flee when they get spotted, run if you swing or throw something at them, hide behind solid objects, etc.

There are some exceptions, like the WWI rats that got obscenely huge by gorging on the bodies of soldiers that fell in the "No Man's Land." Some of which ate soldiers alive because they were too injured to drive them away, and their able-bodied comrades were powerless to stop them because they too would have been shot had they set foot in the No Man's Land; but I don't think that's not the way every rat is.

Besides, the city elves can make makeshift weapons. Play the City Elf Origin and rush to help the Alienage when the darkspawn swarm Denerim near the endgame, and Shianni and the other elves will all be equipped with makeshift weapons they fashioned together because they want to help fight. It's not like they need a martial blade of steel to slay a rat the same way they need one to slay a person, or a wolf, or a bear.

The elven servants in the Cousland origin were terrified of rats, but they did make special mention of "large grey ones."  So maybe there are smaller, less violent rats that the City Elves can safely hunt and eat?

Seriously, those HN rats were a special case.

I'm pretty sure regular, average rats would most likely flee at the sight of people, and then it's just a matter of catching them. Maybe with traps, successfully squashing them by throwing something at them (like a boot) or swinging something at them (like a fire poker), or some other such.

Guys since weird foods seems to be in discussion here let me cite a few delicacies common on Brazil, a lot of them (not sure if all) came from slaves who had to eat the scraps thrown to them:

-Feijoada: Made of black beans and remnants of pig not normally consumed like: tail, nose, knees, feet, etc. Modern versions of it include bacon and smoked sausage in it, but the core is what is in the previous sentence.

-Buchada de bode: basically the entrails of a goat: liver, kidneys, intestines... spiced and cooked in a small bag, which happens to be the goat's stomach.

-Dobradinha: Bovine/swine equivalent of the above..

They all eventually ended up as delicacies served by the upper class in their parties eventually so I wonder, how many of the City Elves unusual dishes would turn up as delicacies in a noble's cuisine in one day or another?

Really? Are you a brazillian too? Most foreigners I know are usually not very excited about these dishes...
