Anyone else hate this games combat system?

Just quit another run through of DA2 due to the terrible combat system. Some people say this game's combat is better than Origins but I strongly disagree. Combat in Origins at least manages to be decent because its about tactics and strategy. In DA2 combat is just a mindless bash fest of wave fights! Fight hordes of enemies without any abilities and lots of health while you and your party members have lots of abilities and little health. Rinse and repeat throughout the entire game and occasionally throw in a boss. *Yawn*

 

Also this game has a serious lack of customization. I love seeing my party members all wear the exact same armor throughout the entire game, Not! It's also lame how they limit your companion's ability trees.  You want a mage with heals? Lol then I hope you like Anders cause Merrill isn't getting any healing spells.

You have to press the "Awesome" button in order to get the most out of DA2 combat.

It has its good and bad points.  I very much enjoyed the faster pace, for one, and the fact that misses simply reduce damage rather than cancel it outright make it feel more weighty, as well.  I also liked how every companion was unique...yeah, it meant things like healing spells were a little too rare, but I would rather they have solved that by putting in a greater variety of companion options, than by opening the trees up willy-nilly to everyone.  On the other hand, the multiple waves are kind of annoying, and I agree it feels like there's not enough variety in different enemy types.

 

On the whole though, I think it's a step up, if maybe only a smallish one, from DAO, at least in terms of fun factor.

Also another gripe I forgot to mention is the difficulty. I don't want to play on hard mode but since normal mode is such a cakewalk I have no choice.

The filthy shanty town that is my console scoffs at this combat tactics stuff everyone keeps going on about. The most I can do is fiddle around with the tactics menu to set-n-forget (which I also have to do to get rid of some of the ridiculous passive ability effects), but after that, the characters just do what they wanna do anyway, unless I jump bodies and control them for a second or two or just order them to stand still.

DA2 combat is far from ideal but it's still better than DAO. I tried another DAO run through a couple of weeks ago and was stunned how slow combat (and loading screens) are compared to DA2. 

 

It has it's issues for sure. OP seems to suggest fewer but better enemies rather than masses of sword fodder. I'm undecided, I'd like to be able to try it to see if it would be better (but without the mini game style fights like High Dragon)

Origins loading screens were not that bad. The supposed "slow" system was also a lot deeper and more involved with customization, skill and ability options for each class.

 

To be honest, I can only play through DA2's combat with mods (It's not even bad, it's just blatantly shallow). There's a few good ones that allow for party customization and a few other touch-ups that make the game of the RPG that it's supposed to be.

Origins loading screens were not that bad.

I enjoy the more responsive nature of the combat mechanics of DA2, though I look forward to seeing them slowed a bit in DAI. While DAO is a terrific game, the speed was sluggish for some builds, and could deter those not coming from a story driven RPG background. And I say this as one that has lessened reflexes; cannot play Action games.

I liked that DA2's combat was faster (on the console anyway. I didn't have any issues with DAO's combat speed on the PC), and I liked the fact that mages could actually whack opponents with their staffs if necessary (I never understood why mages couldn't use their staffs as actual weapons if opponents got too close in DAO.).

 

Other than that, I prefer DAO's combat system. I liked the tactics better, as well as many of the abilities. I also liked being able to give companions specializations that I wanted them to have, so that they meshed well with the type of character I was playing, rather than them having a "fixed" specialization and being locked out of certain combat trees. I also loved being able to dual-wield two swords (my favorite build) in DAO, instead of only two daggers in DA2.

To clarify, what I mean by sluggish is that when playing my first 2H, in Lothering the dogs, spiders, and bears could speed past my advanced location before I could swing my blade. It was sometime later that I discovered that acquiring the Sunder talents early helped a lot, and then 2H became my fave Warrior design.

I have hope that DAI will contain the best of both previous systems. While still not as I would prefer, it comes closer than the others.
