How about this?
It still kills me that DAI don't have good looking armors.

I've only encountered one type of armour for mages, Just with varying colour schemes.
they do wear something like that in the comicsI found my old post of where I gave several ideas of Indian style of dress for Tevinter, a tad more colorful, but when it comes to decedent empires I tend to prefer them showing off with a variety of color. I wonder what others think of some of these outfits?
I will also see if I can find some byzantine designs, though that would be more pictures though.

That is alright. though it is a bit spikey and feels generic 'evil guy' armor
Monkey how do they look in the comics? any pictures as I have not read them yet.

Magisters would become very confusing.
If I rolled up to Tevinters gate and that is what I saw? I would think twice. Just sayin.

Finally you acknowledge the glory of Tevinter!
@kainD:
I actually don't like that outfit. Perhaps for blood magic rituals, but not for showing up in the magisterium or formal wear IMO of course.
Speaking of formal events would exist in the imperium? Dorian talks about how balls like the winter ball mission are rather similar. But what about charoit races, gladitorial combat and so on.

Yeah, probably might be a bit too much. Umm.. for showing up in the magisterium I would go for something like this:

Does it remind anyone else of The Darkness/Witchblade?
Edit: Tevinter should create living, symbiotic armor.
Too much 1700 for my taste. I prefer traditional medieval outfits.
looking at the images of byzantine armor and clothing design, using them as a basis would be good. As Byzantine armor/clothing tends to be a hybrid of roman/medieval, having elements of what we typically regard as medieval and roman in their clothing and armor.
yeah i got that vibe tooDoes it remind anyone else of The Darkness/Witchblade?
Tevinter could create symbiotic, living armor. Tevinter can do anything.
yeah i got that vibe too

Normally I would agree, but as the series goes on we're drifting further and further away from direct historical influences. I mean, we've pretty much jumped the shark with the Formal outfit in DA:I (and I don't necessarily mean that in a bad way). Tevinter itself has changed its entire aesthetic for every video game, comic book, and artwork its citizens have been featured in.
Remember the obscene, feathery nipple-robes from Origins? Since then we've had trencoat-plate Altus mages, the inspiration for the Spellbinder robes, Aurelian Titas and Devon (who is straight-up dressed in 1700s fashion, whereas all the pics I've posted would resemble early 1600s at the latest), the rather unique Venatori, and finally this from the tabletop:

So tevinter ladies in formal events would be wearing hoop skirts? as for ladies the 1700s is when that became the fashion of the day.
I prefer either Byzantine, Ancient Roman, and Indian designs for my tevinter, but that is just me.
