I've seen a number of people talking about how badly the tactics we saw at Ostagar were handled, but they always discuss as though assuming everyone they talk to is already familiar with what medieval style warfare is supposed to be like. I've always wanted to ask someone, what was so glaringly bad?

Archers fired a single volley, said archers were not even positioned on available higher ground. After the single volley, they sent a bunch of Mabari charging at the enemy for... some reason. I don't even know what the Mabari were supposed to accomplish when used in such a manner.

After the dogs die, they give up their fortified choke point and charge on the Darkspawn horde.

I think the mabari were there in place of light calvary.

Maybe. Still, such a charge would still be moronic if they were light cavalry.

Against a thinking foe capable of forming spear lines definitely.

Mmm.

I want to see both Qunari and Tevinter field tactics. Though, given the Battle of Ostagar cutscene I might regret asking for that.

Roman legions and tactics, I'm rooting for that though most likely not gonna happen.

And I was under the impression that they were aware of the imbalance between forces, that is why they dug in in the first place. The fortifications were practically open, not prepared for a fall back plan at all, darkspawn could easily follow. And since the force in Ostagar was supposed to draw the darkspawn in they should have had a decent shield wall behind the battlements, not run out to meet the enemy. But it is not nearly annoying as the Lord of The Rings Helm´s deep. That castle and siege screamed of bad planning and design.

And people say The Glorious Tervinter Imperium isn't tolerant of others. Look how many anti-tervinter posters we have here and not  a single one of them has been made a blood sacrifice yet.

Mmm the wedge, the testudo... I'm thinking of all the potential uses there are for battlemages within a conventional army and how they should be nearly unstoppable, assuming they are utilized correctly.

There were no 'tactics at Ostagar'; Ostagar was purely cinematic and it worked beautifully. Kind of like in ME3's EC when Normandy flies in front of Harbinger for one last romantic goodbye.

Interesting. Its sounds like the devs traded realism for visual appeal, and saving time...like what happens a lot in films. I see Emissary beat me to saying this.

How many volleys should have been fired? Should they have never charged, and just let to spawn rush at then so can catch on their swords without losing position?

How many volleys should have been fired?

Until there were no more arrows left. If they were positioned at a higher position, such as along the ramparts below the bridge, and if the infantry didn't charge out to meet the enemy, they would have been in a much better position to continuously fire upon the horde without any risk of hitting their own comrades.

Should they have never charged, and just let to spawn rush at then so can catch on their swords without losing position?

Their position under the bridge, along with the spiked fences they had built (why, if you're just going to abandon them in a charge?), would have not only slowed the Darkspawn charge as they navigated the obstacles, but also limited the number of Darkspawn engaging them at once.

Fereldans are brawlers so they do lack "proper" tactics. Maybe the vints are different... all i jope for is a decent phalanx

Though to be honest I get the feeling that those fortifications were a moot point anyway.

The Darkspawn had siege engines and mages.

In this case whatever produced those large flaming balls of pitch.

Not all of them were magical fireballs.

What The Baconer said. Also as they were supposed to lure out the enemy (which had larger numbers) leaving fortified positions (which should have been better imo) was a really bad idea, especially making a all out charge. But like said it was probably for cinematic reasons.
