Debt is a commodity like...oil.

China owes North American and Eurasian interests nearly thirty trillion dollars, but it isn't anything but a collectable commodity.

So when I hear criticism of national debt, I laugh, because it's a joke.

Notice as well, that from this stance you can easily loose spells from the pommel. From here, we can make a disabling strike, or even a feint, like so.

 

Notice the reaction. Shield up to protect the face, bracing with anti-magical wards. Templars train for years to do this without even thinking. Use this against them. Fire, lightning, a crackle of spirit energy, anything will do, the brighter the better. When the shield goes up, move in and strike low, at the knee or the thigh where they have little protection. If conditions allow, one may also circle around with a magical jaunt, and strike their back.
