appears ive rubbed off on you haha

No. I'm a Legionnaire. I've seen Altus Battlemages flee like cowards where their mundane squires had the mettle to pick up the sword in their stead. The Imperium should be for the good of all. The barbarous South are regarded as such for their suspicion and fear of magic. Why should the glorious Imperium fall into the same trap?

Army needs reform. Slaves will run with the moment of opportunity. Citizen soldiers fight but they are still not good enough. The Imperium needs a strong professional army, just like Rome. It will lead to a new era.

From what I understood, Tevinter already has a professional army (that slaves are not allowed to serve in), but it obviously needs to be reworked. I'm thinking that one of the biggest problems is that, uh, many of our mages do not seem to understand and comply with the rigors and lifestyle of military service. I know of multiple counts of "magisters" traveling to Seheron with slaves in tow, as if it were some holiday vacation instead of an active warzone. Clearly we need stricter guidelines for magisters who wish to participate in combat that act in accordance with military procedure.

Out-of-character: I admit I have not read Stolen Throne, but so far everything related to war and military bodies in Dragon Age makes about as much sense as a soup-sandwich.

Indeed, its a shame. So many cowards out there these days. Obviously any Magister taking seriously part in war operation needs to be rewarded properly for their effort. Cowards, well, there are ways to deal with them.

out of character: I don´t recall seeing any info about the military structure of Tevinter armed forces, though I think I have seen notes about slave soldiers. If anyone can point out anything substantial then please do.

Alexius said that Tevinter has "legions", and WoT states that slaves cannot serve in the military. I think this would imply a professional standing army.

They must not have used them yet then.....or if they have and even so the results of the battles have been like they have been I think its time to send em to be made into golems or something cause they are garbage.

I always got the impression he was speaking of Cory's forces rather than Tevinter.

At a period where he was still pretending to represent Tevinter, under the false pretense that the rebel mages would be serving in Tevinter's military?

Could a random Magister actually represent a Nation in such capacity? You figure the mass conscription into the military such as it is would be more of a senatorial matter.

Anyway it doesn't really matter, what with there being no information on it's structuring and given Bioware's track record that isn't like to change.

Doesn't matter whether he can or can't, at least as long as the rebel mages thought he could.

Fair enough.

o.o the rebels all ended up dying at Haven anyway so I hope they enjoyed their military careers.

I do enjoy the thought of legions, it has a nice roman ring to it. Though mixing that with battle elephants would give a strange view. Or maybe it is because I have read so much about Punic Wars.

This, I imagine Tevinter's military is structured like Ancient Rome's. And I think the things get blurry when it comes down to 'slaves' serving. Indentured servitude via military service sounds like a thing. Captured slaves sold as chattel wouldn't make for great Legionnaires though. If the latter fights at all it's probably in the Proving Coliseum.

I imagine that the Officers of the Legion are largely comprised of Laetans, non-magi Altus, and of course magi Altus with the mettle to make a name for themselves before pursuing a seat on the Magisterium.

Yep, and the leading officer of the legion/s is a senator/Magister. But the slave thing would not work since people would run en masse given the change. Unless there is blood magic being used for control...

Yeah, blood magic would be too sloppy. If soldiers can't trust their CO's to not mind-rape them, especially when blood magic isn't 'legal' in the Imperium, I don't foresee many victories. Sure, you can probably get away with using blood magic against Qunari in combat, but against your own? Doubtful. I guess that indentured Legionnaires like Cremicius' father joins out necessity rather than duty or obligation. But, if you're good at your trade it's probably easy to rise in rank indentured or not.

Oooh, now that touches on a really interesting scenario that hasn't been acknowledged yet: what happens to mundanes born into an Altus family? Being "dumped" into the military as officers actually makes a lot of sense.

That's how I look at it. They're set for life and their family's interest are being represented in the Magisterium. Best place to go to for personal glory is the Legion. Become a badass General and that's more prestige brought to your House. A mundane that makes it that way has probably set their House up in the most ironic of ways. Like a "Look at us! Even our mundanes are badass!" type of statement.

Well my rp character did stuff one of his daughters (a mundane) to work in the archives under the care of Magister Rose.  :)

I could also see them fetching big dowries from rich soporati merchant families looking to increase their odds of children with magic. Just because the gift skipped a generation doesn't mean it won't come back.

What ever happened to her?  Is Rob keeping her locked up in his closet or something?

Ari let's flesh out VintQun hostilities on Seheron bro. All you do is bark like, but your contributions have little bite. Also are the Tamassrans hot bro? How many Qunari defected to the Tal Vashoth or the Glorious Imperium to work as mercenaries (lemme guess, 'none')?
