*War horns blares echoed in the open field. two legions advanced in combat formation to meet the qunari forces. Third legion had been cut to cohorts as reserves and placed behind the two in a long line. Light cavalry units waited at the edges of the formation. Battle mages could be spotted from each formation of the small free space reserved around them. Signal flags gave the final instructions to the centurions. He sat on his horse watching the battlefield through a looking glass from a small hill behind the troops. Praefect, two tribunes and Primas Pilus with couple of centurions sat on their horses next to him. His elaborate command tent with the war table was behind them in the second hill. Imperial flags fly in the air pointing out the command position.
After the landing in a beach near Alam local army group sent them one more legion to bolster their overall strength to three legions. With the extra troops the relief army had advanced within a week close to the alleged location of Magister General near the mountain range without incidents. The landscape here consisted of forestry hills and valleys dotted with open fields. Scouting the area revealed the besieged Tevinter legion, or what was left of it. They had backed up in a small rocky hill leaning on the mountain side at the end of a valley. Hastily built defences had kept them safe so far, repelled charges were visible even from this distance as dead bodies littered the hill sides like hundreds of black ants. It was obvious thought that the besieged troops were going to loose as the surrounding qunari army had superior strength in numbers, three to one.
Primas pilus, the old grizzled war veteran centurion of soporati class sneered. "My lord, I still think we did not leave enough troops to the rear guard. There are currently just few light recon units covering our back".
"I know Gallus" Ukki replied, "there is a element of danger present but with our speedy advance and current forces focused in the attack I believe we are able to break the siege and retreat before any more qunari appear". He knew this old centurion from years back as they served together in the Black Dragon cohort when he was a young man. He respected Gallus and had requested his presence in this campaign.
"Besides, there are double the number of combat mages with us than usual just to give us the advance we need". Gallus shaked his head, "I feel in my bones that there is more to this than we see". Prefect and tribunes look at each other as they felt the old centurion is out of line questioning their commanders decision. He just smiled and ignored their glares, Gallus had earned his right to disagree.
As soon as the qunari forces had seen the Tevinter legions enter the valley they had mostly abandoned the siege turning to face this new threat, leaving only a token force to keep the defenders from charging their rear. Overall troop strength was practically even though qunari lacked their cannons and reciprocally Imperial troops had twice the amount of battle mages. So the situation looked good for them.
Ukki had left Nazlik in the command tent despite her protest. "I want to be with you" she said angrily. "And I want you to be with me" he replied feeling sorry, "but these are the commanding officers of these legions, I can´t justify your presence without compromising my status. This is a military operation and you are supposed to be a qunari slave". Nazlik snorted at that and crossed her hands over her chest demonstratively. "I promise, I will not leave you behind" he said softly and kissed her despite her pursing her lips. "Stay in this tent, do not wander out to battlefield" he said as he stepped outside his command tent attaching his purple striped cape.
First clash with the qunari was successful. In a good order the heavy infantry broke through the front line splitting the qunari forces in two despite their tenacious resistance. Combat mages caused huge losses bombarding elemental strikes over the qunari wrecking havoc and confusion. The besieged defenders poured out in vindictive rage to get some revenge on the retreating qunari. Relieved legionaries greeted their saviors with a loud cheer.
"Looks good" said the tribune next to Ukki with satisfaction. "So far so good" he replied.
As they were gazing the battlefield something caught his eye, as he turned he saw a scout riding with haste towards them.
"My lord! Qunari troops behind us, they are entering the valley as we speak!"
"Calm down, how many?" he asked gesturing the scout to slow down.
"Twice as many as us at least" scout said with a nervous tone.
Ukki gestured his commanding officers to come closer, "You heard him. There are probably as much qunari behind us as there is of us. The scout is scared, I´m not certain he can assess the numbers of the enemy correctly". Gallus nodded with a grim look. Ukki looked at the praefect and tribunes, "go to the troops and make sure the remains of the besieger qunari forces are being destroyed fast, then turn our troops around in haste. And find the Magister General!". His officers saluted him and rode off.
He grabbed Gallus by his arm. "Not you, come with me". As they rode over the hill towards the command tent he noticed the young centurion commanding his small personal guard running from the tent. "What is this?" he asked blocking the man with his horse, "where are you going?".
"I was coming to you my lord" the young man stuttered, "I sent the slaves and servants to bolster the forward troops to slow the qunari down".
"You did what?" Ukki asked with steel in his voice, "Where is the qunari woman from my tent?" he fixed his eyes on the young man.
The young centurion noticed immediately his mistake and started to stutter even more under his gaze, "I...I.. I thought that.. my lord..I didn´t know she was your personal slave"
"This is not over" Ukki said gnashing his teeth at the youngster. "Gallus, go back to the tent with this man and make sure all maps and scrolls are being evacuated". "My lord" Gallus replied, "where will you go?".
"I will go find her" Ukki said with a determined voice, "tell praefect that he is in charge until my return".
The old veteran looked at him silently then nodded, "Maker be with you my lord".
As the men left Ukki rode to the top of the next hill. From there he had more open view to the bottom of the valley. He could see a thin line of troops spreading across the valley to stop the advancing qunari. He grabbed hastily his looking glass and was able to see a small white dot among the troops. "By the void" he cursed riding down the hill.
As he rode closer he passed retreating wounded soldiers, scared servants and slaves running from the battle. Some slaves and servants raised their hands at him pleading for help, in vain as he just ignored them. Now he could see her. The Imperial troops were on a general retreat as the qunari forces had broken through the thin line with ease. He could see she was injured, she was retreating holding her left shoulder. "Nazlik!" he shouted waving his hand, "over here!". As the chasing qunari troops spotted his purple striped cape a eager roar raised through the troops and they doubled their running speed for this sudden but welcome possibility to get their hands on the enemy commander. He crouched over his horse and whipped it with a fury to a full speed galloping towards her with his cape streaming behind him.
Lone arrows started to fly by him as the best qunari bowmen got close enough to target him. Nazlik had spotted him and ran towards with her hand raised. She looked at him with relief as he stopped his horse next to her, "You came for me, I was afraid you couldn´t reach me in time!" she gasped out of breath. "I would never leave you" he said taking her hand, as suddenly he felt a burning sensation in his right thigh. A qunari arrow had pierced his leg as he had not concentrated on his magical shield. There was no time to loose now. Ukki pulled Nazlik sideways in front of him as the qunari were only few meters away.
Even with the double weight his excellent horse could speed up and leave the charging qunari behind. Now they were showered with arrows, his shield was wavering with the continued pressure. As the distance grew he felt a thumb on his back. He looked down and saw the bloody tip of a spear in his chest with a rune glowing on it. "Should have known" he thought as he started to feel dizzy, "someone had to have brains there". As he exhaled he breathed a red mist over Nazlik. She saw the blood on her arm and looked up from her uncomfortable position. "No!" she gasped and tried to reach for him as he slowly leaned against the horses neck over her. As the world was slowly fading away he could still hear a distant cheer from the chasing qunari, then he drifted off into darkness.*
