Imperator Severus meets Magister Ukki of house Vaellanius

Intro

*The Vaellanius manor, or more like a small castle, stood in one of the tightly built hills of the old Minrathous. Located near the Circle of Magi. The manor was surrounded with two sets of perimeter walls. The first one was smaller, built only few hundred years ago, and circled around the hill giving the manor some space among the buildings in that area. It had been built from white marble and decorated with relief carvings of the historical events of Tevinter Imperium. Two huge dragon statues embedded in the wall watched over the main gate. The gate was made of black iron and has Vaellanius coat of arms on both sides, a flaming four headed dragon, two guards stood by the gate and one each side on the wall.

A marble walkway circled the hill between the walls surrounded with small sculpted shrubbery. Statues from Tevinter legends stood along the walkway. The main marble road from the gate led up to the inner wall, it surface filled with illustrations of historical events. Statues of significant members of Vaellanius family stood both sides of the road welcoming guests. The inner wall itself was ancient, build in the times when the Imperium ruled Thedas. Six meters tall, four in the bottom and three meters wide at the top, it towers over the first one and could be seen from distance. It consisted of large black granite slabs and has no decorations. The walls surface was smooth, seams were practically non existent among the stones. A second set of dragon statues stood at guard outside the gate. The gate with layered steel doors of this wall was huge, it even had a drop gate. 
Being larger and heavier these gates stayed open, only to be closed in a moment of crisis. Guards stood both outside and behind the gate, patrolling on the wall in pairs. Both the gate and wall were warded and runed against any magical attacks. Apprentice mages took turns guarding the gate from atop.

 

Behind the second wall was the manor itself along with the mage tower. The marble road led through both of the gates to the inner yard and  to the main doors of the manor. The road made a small circle around a decorated fountain before the twin doors. On the back right side of the manor onlooker could see the black mage tower hovering over everything, as it was the tallest building. Family stable stood next to the tower, under it´s shadow. A small servant gate with steel door has been carved next to the stables, tall enough for a horse to walk in. 
A guard barrack stood before it, large enough to hold 100 soldiers. It was attached to the main manor so the guards could have access both in the building and in the yard. On the left side of the gate there was a small garden with trees and walkways. On the right side of the gate there was a small imperial home chantry against the wall.

The manor was itself built of several layers. The oldest parts still remaining were the mage tower and the main hall. The mage tower, which was also made of black granite, and the catacombs below it stretch back to the times of founding the Imperium. As the Vaellanius family had been a land owners through ages ruling their own province outside Minrathous, there was a rather large building section partially underground, reserved for slaves. Of which there were of abundance.

A flock of escort slave women of different races scurried around the yard and in the garden playing games, and just spending time.  Magister Ukki had acquired many companion slaves in his years. Servant quarters were above the slave quarters just to give them a idea of superiority. A large number of servants ran even a larger number of slaves in order to keep the manor running. The elaborate living quarters for the family members were located in the back with the tower, after the guest and mage apprentice wing. Though these days they are mostly empty since the Vaellanius family has been in decline and only few members existed anymore. Tower itself held all the summoning chambers, spell rooms and magical libraries among other things. And in the top of it was Ukki´s personal chamber.

The yard had a number of statues, again upstanding members of the Vaellanius family, along the marble road. Archons, dreamers, generals and magisters. People who guided the Imperium once, now revered names in the family history book. Sculpted dragon statutes stand in different positions in the garden. The main manor was built of marble and had elaborate carvings and drake gargoyles on it hanging on eaves. A third set of smaller dragons guarded the elaborate mains doors, carved of polished dragon bone. Vaellanius family flags flied over each corner of the manor. All in all the place reeked of impressive power and extreme wealthy old money.*

 

Meeting

"You said we were going to a manor."

 

"Yes."

 

"That, sir, is a fortress."

 

"Mm-hm." the Imperator, accompanied by two men of the order, made his way up the hill toward Vaellanius manor. The compound sat at the heart of Old Minrathous, long reserved for the city's oldest and most powerful families. They passed by Altus mages, accompanied by personal guards, attended to by well-dressed and cleanly groomed slaves, a sharp contrast with the raggedy publicus who attended to the district's flora. A competitive display of wealth, undoubtedly.

 

Two walls encircled the Vaellanius manor's grounds; one of white marble, and a second black as the void. The Imperator pointed toward the second wall, while shielding his face from the sun. "That second wall, looks like old Tevinter. Must predate the First Blight and Transfiguration". They approached the gate, enwrought with the Vaellanius family heraldry. Two guards stood before the gate, and two more upon the wall.

 

The Imperator, still clad in his helmet, approached one of the guards. "Good day. I would speak with Magister Ukki, if he is at home." The guard gave a confused glance to his peer. Seeing this, he added "We come in the service of our Archon, Radonis."

* The guard hesitated for a moment. The summer sun had been mercilessly scorching him all morning and the armor he wore was itching. He had hoped to finish his guard duty without any incidents. Now this hope seemed futile. These people didn´t look like the ordinary guests coming to see his master. Their well crafted armor and posture spoke of discipline and high standing. However, he had not been informed of any high standing guests. He was unsure how to react to them, but as the lead man spoke the name of Archon Radonis it electrified him. He winked to his comrade to open the gate, just to be sure.

 

The one speaking had his helmet on which made the guard a bit suspicious. Who walks around with full body armor and closed helmet in this infernal heat?

 

"Good day my lord" he bowed slightly as he was unsure of the status of the man in armor. "Lord Magister Vaellanius is indeed currently present. I am sorry to tell you this but I have not been informed of any guests at this hour. May I inquire who seeks my lords audience?".*

The Imperator stood for a moment, transfixed by the dragon statues adorning the gate. Finally, he looked back at the guard, adjusting the scabbard at his hip, "Severus. Imperator."

*The guard winced slightly unintentionally. He had heard that name among the whispers in the barracks, names and people of whom you should not know about. A shadow war fought behind the scenes. And now he was here. 

 

"Of course, my lord. Please come this way. I will see what can be done". He turned around and walked through the gate whistling at the messenger boy in the guard house. The boy rushed out and stood still memorizing what the guard whispered to him, then bolted for the manor.

 

"I have sent word to Magister Vaellanius. The response will be here in a short while. Please accompany me to the second gate while we wait". He pointed forward and started walking up hill without looking back. two more guards stepped out of the guard house following them few steps behind. 

 

By the time they reached the second gate where the mage apprentice and guards gazed them interested from top of the gate, the word of this unexpected visit had already spread. Bored escort women loitering in the garden had come closer staring with curiosity at the men in shining armors, some of them giggling into their pawns. 

 

A mage apprentice rushed out of the manors main doors with a guard in tow. he reached the gate few moments after the escorted guests. 

 

With a overstated warm smile this young man bowed to the guest, "my lord Imperator, welcome to the house Vaellanius. My name is Publius Scaro, at your service. What an honor to have your highness as a guest, even unexpected, in my masters home".

He had a striking resemblance with Ukki, a feature this young power hungry and ambitious mage willfully exaggerated. Even to the point of trying to dress like Ukki, as he idolized the head of the Vaellanius family. He had seen Ukki wield his power and hoped to someday be like him. His secret dream was to be married to one of Ukki´s daughters, a easy door to wealth and power. He was a promising youngest son of a minor Laetan family, eager to rise in social ladders and now after being accepted as Ukki´s apprentice more conservative than many old Altus families.

 

"I will take you to see my master right away. There is a one thing I have to ask your highness to do though,  I am afraid". The young mage turned and pointed at the guard next to him with a plaintive look in his face. "I have to ask you and your companions to leave all your weapons at this guard for safe keeping. You will have them back again when you leave, I assure you. This guard will answer for your weapons with his life". He remained expectant in a slightly bowed posture waiting for the guests to comply.*

"Oh, that's quite alright. My companions were not accompanying me beyond this point," He untied the scabbard from his hip, handing the blade to the agent on his right. He then gave them a nod, and they started back towards the entrance. With the Imperator's back turned, Scaro could see the designs of his mantle. Deep crimson, with scattered writings of ancient Tevene arranged in glyphs, fringed with draconic patters along the edges. He wheeled about to address Publius, "Well, then."

*Publius nodded with satisfaction for the Imperator being so agreeable. But as he turned to give away his sword Publius turned his attention to the glyphs in his mantle. With squinted eyes he tried to map as many as he could of them, going through the possible countermeasures in his mind. 

"Please, this way my lord" he smiled brightly as Imperator turned to him, "If you would be so kind and follow me". When they left for the main door two guards followed them close by. During their walk through the yard some of the elven escort women standing in their way ran giggling to the side of the fountain to avoid them. "Out of my way filthy knife ears" Publius growled waving his hand at them as they passed the women. He didn't share his masters love for wome of different race.

They passed the open main door. Guards following them closed the doors and took positions before them.

Publius guided the Imperator through the main hall. Servants and slaves scampered out of their way. As they were getting closer to the Ukki´s office Publius turned to him, "My lord, I have to warn you from using any magic in my masters study. For your own safety. masters study is so heavily warded against any magic that even unintentional use of magic will activate defensive glyphs and wards. Any other magic than my masters, that is", the warm smile on his face didn´t leave any room for interpretation. 

He then turned to knock the heavy oaken door guarded by two guards, and without waiting an answer he pushed the door open bowing the Imperator to walk in.

The room where Imperator stepped in was full of ancient tomes and spellbooks, maps and artifacts. Behind a large black elaborate table sat Ukki in a chair which looked more like a throne than chair. The Vaellanius family crest was carved up in the black wood of the backrest of the chair. Ukki, wearing his usual black robes with silver runes on it, stood up from behind his desk with a warm smile.

"My friend Severus, I was just thinking about you, and then you show up at my door. Isn´t that a strange coincidence?"*

At first, Severus paid him no heed, instead scanning the study room and admiring the architecture. "Stark black granite, a symbol of raw, Neromenian strength. Statues of Archons and generals, magisters and dreamers. Historical timelines carved into walkways, from tribes to empire. A celebration of our former triumphs," He removed his helmet, turning to look at Ukki, "and glories we shall inherit still." He had auburn hair cut short, with an old burn leaving an empty patch across the right side of his forehead. A cobweb of scars marked his lips, having a rather disconcerting effect as he smiled. 

 

"Truly exquisite, Magister Ukki. An icon of Tevinter's splendor." He stepped forward and held out his hand, "I had intended to come see you earlier, but... I was waylaid by a sudden development."

*While Severus viewed his room Ukki walked around his table taking his hand, giving the Imperator a firm handshake. "Oh thank you, and well said. There is indeed a long line of people before me, a burden I feel on my shoulders every day. Something to live up to in these dark times. And dark they are, even many people seem to forget that. Being lulled into a wrong sense of security. Danger lurks behind our borders, never sleeping. But I do as much as I can", Ukki said looking into Severus eyes smiling, "we both do". He pointed at the seat before the table, "please, have a seat".

Ukki walked to the small side table with a crystal wine bottle and glasses on a silver plate. "Can I pour you some wine? This is from one of my own vineyards, it is refreshingly cool". He asked pouring himself some. "How is the scar these days?" he continued, "still feeling the pain? You know I have some outstanding healers at my disposal. I could have someone to look at it".

He gazed his groomed and sophisticated features from the elegant mirror on the wall. The millenia long breeding in Vaellanius family didn´t only apply to magical talent, but also to appearance. His light brown hair was combed all the way back and tiny goatee groomed precisely. Dark brown eyes surveyed his appearance ruminating. "I have been lucky enough not to have my face scarred" he whispered, mostly to himself.

"Indeed. Now, this recent business," He glanced at the mirror, "I think we both now realize it is a waste of time. I admit, with the swift reaction to the arrest I thought we had insurrection on our hands. So then I decided to make the Paulus boy a special project of mine. Then your dealings with the bard... she was a bard, in more ways than one."

 

He looked back at Ukki, "But after a little inquiry I think this whole situation is less complicated than I initially thought. Fortunately."

*"The Paulus boy?"  Ukki turned aroud, "he was a bastard. Did you know he had a hobby of dissecting elven children?" He gazed at the Imperator. "Yes, alive children. I was going to kill him eventually, I only needed him to have his fathers support in a small endeauvour of mine. Crazy bastards tend to turn on you eventually". He took a sip of the wine,

"your actions only interfered with mine in a crucial point". He smiled at Severus, "It didn´t have anything to do with the Venatori. If that is what you are thinking. I have no love for those mouthbreathers, I´m only concerned when they affect my general plans through their social connections".

 

He paused gazing into distance. 

 

"I am more worried of this new... idea... some more liberal members of the Senate had in mind. As a person who has one third of the Magisterium behind him I think it is of my best interest to make sure the status quo remains. Even if it requires some... adjustments".

 

Ukki walked slowly to his desk sitting down and placing the wine glass on it. "I.."

 

Suddenly a part of large bookcase turned silently and Nazlik walked into the room, "You know what love, there isn´t a si...". She stopped at her tracks when she saw the Imperator. After for a second of silence she backed down through the door speaking silently "I will wait here".

 

Ukki closed his eyes for a moment with a tiny sight gathering his thoughts, "yes, the bard. I heard a rumor that she has been speaking of the most egregious things of me. I need to correct those". He leaned back tapping the desk with his fingertip. "I had a private party with a few close friends of mine in the Magisterium. She was there as a performer, and I admit it, I should have done more bacgkround check on her. That is all".

 

He took a sip of the wine, "this is excellent wine, by the way. You are missing out. But, anyway. Please tell me, what is it that makes things easier for us?", he asked with a curious look on his face.

"It would require no amount of effort on your part." the corner of Severus' mouth twitched as watched Nazlik back away through the door, "We will be collecting known Venatori collaborators. Smugglers, financiers, ringleaders, those who redirected Imperial funds... and then we will execute them. All that I need of you is to stand back and let the Imperium's justice take its due course."

 

"As for the bard," he took a seat before the desk and leaned inward, "you might be pleased to know that her knowledge of this personal matter of yours is of no concern to me. Rather, I am interested in her other work, as a matter of Tevinter's security. Once her questioning is completed she will be disposed of; her existence will no longer be an inconvenience to you. Or at least, it doesn't have to be."

 

He then sat in silence for a few moments, looking over Ukki in consideration. Finally, he added, "I might question your taste, but that is hardly my business. But, a Revered Mother from the south?" His expression hardened, "Tevinter is home of the first and true Chantry, established by Hessarian himself. It is troubling that you would turn to this perversion of Orlais."

*Ukki contemplated what the Imperator had said for a moment. "That indeed is a small feature to perform, and I would tend to agree with you on principal". He paused crossing his arms, "but, the way I see it is that you can kill a man only once. Then he is useless. There is potential among these men and women, as much as I would like to dismiss that". He stood up and walked to the map of Seheron. "We are about to loose Seheron, once again. You can see the signs" he said silently, "I served the Imperium fighting ten years on and off those cursed oxmen there". He turned to the Imperator, "don´t you think they would serve the Imperium more by fighting the oxmen rather than just getting their heads chopped off?". He nodded slightly, "some are clearly guilty of treason, and they need to be punished for it. I give you that. But not all of them".

 

Ukki waved his hand dismissively, "and the chantry, bah! Nothing but a tool. A tool to control the unwashed masses!". He walked to the table for a sip of the wine, and then continued with a resentful look on his face. "Only fools and weak hearted place their hope on such things. I thought more of you. Like my friend Vartag would say, I couldn´t give a nugs ass about it. Hessarian was out to get political clout and power, nothing more. Had the old gods appeared on his doorstep he would have fell on his knees that second". Sardonic smile lingered on his lips.

 

He then took a deep breath and sat down sweeping his hair, "However, to indulge you. Let´s play a game. Let´s assume that there would be a person in the Imperium who would have used services of the southern chantry. Why would that be? Could he already be married, in a loveless marriage. With a social status that would prevent any contact in the Imperial chantry? And maybe, just maybe to soothe his love he just might find a way to get married with her. Even it only exists in their heads. Love can make men do the strangest things". He hushed down looking the Imperator in the eyes.

 

Then he leaned back, "But, getting back to the actual discussion. I admit that the bard, whom was just a singer and musician in my party, is now a small problem to me. Her unfounded accusations might cause me public damage. I may... have to refrain from certain actions regarding the Venatori to have the issue solved in peace".

A smirk appeared on the Imperator's lips, "Yes, I know how things are among the families. So bound are we by appearances, by pomp and pedigree that we cannot do what we feel is right. So restricting, it drove this individual, in part, to the southern Chantry. Perhaps it is a mere tool, as you say, a doctrine of pure fabrication," he began to speak low, "and yet... in that moment, it meant something to them. To someone they cared for. There is power in that, you must admit."

 

He tapped his finger on his breastplate, square upon the face of Hessarian, "I believe that whatever gods that linger in the sky or the void have surely turned their backs on Tevinter, and so, we must be the instruments of our own salvation. But to achieve this, we must be unified. To that end, we must look to sources of strength; icons that ignite a sense of pride within every Tevinter, slave or magister ." He leaned back and pointed out the window, toward the ceiling, at nothing in particular "When the First Blight, the old priests, and the war with barbarians nearly brought us to ruin, Hessarian secured solidarity. He instilled loyalty within legions of slaves who had no real stake in the Imperium's survival. I-"

 

He stopped, falling silent for a moment before rising from his chair, "Forgive me, this tangent has gone on for far too long. In short: the Venatori agents we have charged worked in the service of a Darkspawn, who sought to usurp our Archon Radonis. As such, they will find a... most colorful end. As for their lessors, I'm sure the senate will throw their bodies at Seheron in the most efficient manner possible." he put his helmet back on, "let the process take it's course, and I'm sure we will find this bard's testimony naught but baseless, Orlesian propaganda."

 

He began to turn toward the door, but then quickly spun around on his heel to face Ukki, stepping forward to loom over the desk, "Oh, and I'm sure that I can rely on you to bring any future matters of security directly to my attention, yes?"

*Ukki bent forward leaning on the table with his elbows placing his fingertips together. A warm smile spread across his face, "Oh indeed I will, I will my friend. I will keep you in my thoughts. I always remember my friends, I have a long memory". 

He gazed in the eye slits of Imperator´s helmet. After a moment of silence he continued, "I expect anything related to this bard to be gone for good. I do not want to hear about this later, conveniently appearing in some inappropriate moment. That would be most unfortunate". He paused for a moment, "for us all".

He stood up waving his hand at the door. "Publius will escort you back to your men. I hope we can do this again soon, it has been too long from our last meeting. In the mean time, I wish you luck in your endeavor, good hunting".

Ukki hesitated for a moment, then said silently "I want you to know. Despite our differences I respect your conviction. The Imperium needs strong willed men and women, willing to do what is necessary. It is not always easy, I know. I too have a vision how things need to be". He smiled sarcastically.*

"Mm-hm." Severus gave a slight nod, "Magister Vaellanius." and then departed from the office. Closing the door behind him, guards still standing vigil on either side. He looked around the main hall for Publius.

*Publius rushed to the scene with a broad smile when he saw the Imperator leaving the study. "My lord. I´m sorry to have you waiting. This way please". He bowed, " I will take you to your companions". Publius turned around and guided the Imperator through the manor. In the main doors they passed young Vel who made a elaborate bow to the Imperator accompanied with a amused smile.

 

While they approached the second gate where the Imperators companions were waiting Publius turned to him, "I apologize my lord, but I am afraid I will have to leave you here. Your men are there at the guard house", he pointed at the building by the gate. "You will find them well catered in your absence. For future reference, I have to ask my lord in behalf of my master, that if you would be so kind and inform us of your highness visit beforehand next time. That way my master can prepare a meeting of your stature. I bid you good day my lord". He bowed at the Imperator with a broad smile and left for the manor.*

The Imperator gave a nod to one of the guards standing outside the manor gates. One of the agents approached, handing him back his short sword, "A man of respectable taste, that Ukki. Slave girls looked amicable."

 

"I'm sure they are." They began walking back down the hill as he retied the scabbard to his hip. Up ahead, an Altus walked ahead of a wagon carrying a statue toward another residence. Skeletal figures, arms crossed or bound in prayer, a single human figure looming above them, bare and androgynous. A circular pattern upon the forehead, must be indicating a spirit.

 

An exaggerated gasp from the agent on his left, "Sweet Maker, what is that?"

 

The Imperator shielded his eyes from the sun, "Looks Nevarran."

 

"Heinous. It should be the other cultures who appropriate our work. As is the tradition."

 

The one on his right, "Indeed. Oh, but that ropework... wouldn't it be more secure on it's side?"

 

"And miss showing the neighborhood the new garden ornament? Perish the thought."

 

Beneath his helmet, the Imperator smirked. As they drew further from the manor, the agent on his right spoke again. Low now, serious, "Did he...?"

 

"No."

 

"Hm. Well, then." He looked over his shoulder, back at the ancient black wall encircling the manor. "So be it."

*After the door closed behind Imperator the wide smile on Ukki´s face vanished and was replaced by a harsh look. He sat down contemplating what had just transpired. Across the room a another secret door opened from the bookshelves and Livia walked in the study. "So cards are now on the table" she said slowly. "Indeed" Ukki responded, he took a sip of his wine. "And now the ball is in my corner". 

 

"What shall we do with the Imperator, is it time..?" Livia asked.

"No. We will do nothing at the moment", Ukki said, "he made it clear. I am now bound by this bard, otherwise it will all come out. And I would guess in the Magisterium of all places. He leaned back, "No. I will wait, I have no choice. Unless we find the bard that is.." he glanced at Livia with cold eyes. 

 

"But I can´t let this go, not without a reaction", he gazed in the distance for a while, "Horatia, she will pay the price".

What I meant is how (Orlesian) Andrastian Chantry's influence and power has spread to all southern nations of Thedas. I do believe it's necessary for the Imperial Chantry to remain strong, and they must prevent Andrastian Chantry's teaching to spread over the Imperium. Otherwise, other beliefs may give people doubt, and the Imperium will suffer crisis of faith once again.

Orlesian chantry has no upper hand. They just got dictated to by a random "inquisitor" who they found in a ditch.

I like them and all, but still... I'm pretty sure Tevinter isn't even half as absurd.
