The faith of the Temple of Dumat is admirable, but there is a boundary between faith and delusion and I fear some have crossed it. Our historians have seen Dumat, turned and corrupted by the blight. We know of the Warden magics used to slay him -and how can we not? we invented them- and we know when, where and how it happened. His voice has been silent ever since the first blight.
Whatever the magisters found in the Golden City, it was powerful enough to corrupt even the gods themselves. Rather than deny the facts that even our historians agree on, we should continue to investigate what kind of power can touch the gods themselves. If we could harness such power... imagine what we could achieve. A power that rivals the gods themselves! The power that Dumat, in his last commands, desired for us to claim!
All we need is the secret of the technique to attempt again, and the knowledge of the first expedition to avoid repeating our mistakes. The first expedition failed miserably, and all magisters were assumed lost, but... I have heard whispers. Rumours that one of the ancient magisters still draws breath. I cannot guarantee the validity of these rumours, but given that they seemed to surround the Champion of Kirkwall, around whom destiny seems to coil like a snake I feel that we should investigate.
I feel no desire to worship this... Maker. Even assuming he exists -which I will remind the council, there is nothing to show he does- then not a god worth worshipping. For how many years have people pleaded for his aid? And for how many years more has he neglected them? The Old Gods, even sealed as they are, still listened and answered the prayers of their priests. The Maker does none of this. Worse, if one believes the words of the Chantry, the Maker is responsible for the blights in the first place. Why should we thank a god for surviving the very plagues he curses us with?
No, ladies and gentlemen, the Andrastian faith is no worship of a true god. If one looks at history, it is little more than a political religion. A false faith to secure the rule of the common folk. Recall, if you will, the events following the burning of Andraste. A man called Hessarian picked up his blade and skewered the prophet, claiming that 'he heard the voice of the Maker.' But what were his first actions after converting? Rousing the population against the Tevinter and killing almost the entire clergy of the seven temples.
Though the very act is the essence of heresy, I do admire him for his quick thinking. He saw a chance for power and took it.
And power he forged. Ever so easy did the Chantry get formed. First in Tevinter, then in Orlais. Both political formations to secure a base of power, though the Orlesian one is worse by far. Denouncing magic, the gift of magic, as a curse. The sheer ridicule boggles the mind! Even by their own words, their 'Maker' bestowed the gift of magic on chosen, and yet they denounce it as a curse? The arrogance!
But I digress. My point is, members of the council, that we of Tevinter do ourselves no good to follow a god made up by people. The Maker has shown no evidence for his existence. He is a figure created to rally people behind a select few who claim to be able to hear him. We have better things to do than to waste time praying for a god that does not exist.
We know our gods exist.
We know where their power lies.
We have been there once, we can do so again. Once we learn what went wrong the first time, we will do it right this time.
The power Dumat passed down to us will be ours!
We will claim the Golden City!
