*Caius walked through the Magisterium´s hall. The last vote of the day was over and Magisters dispersed each to their own direction. He was extremely pleased with himself. His speech had tilted the balance of the vote. The look on Tilani´s face was worth the effort. Caius smiled at her at with a wide sarcastic smile as he passed. All it needed was few well placed insinuations.
As he was heading to the main doors a elven slave bumped into him. Caius turned annoyed to see who it was. A red headed elven woman hurried away from him glancing Caius over her shoulder. He got a glimpse of her eyes, there was something strange in that look which caught his attention. Caius turned to her raising his hand, "hey yo... ".
Suddenly someone slapped him in the shoulder. "Well done Caius, well done!", Magister Florens, a older and plumper member of the conservative group, stood next to him with a broad smile. "That speech was brilliant, it totally tilted uncertain Magisters on our side". The old man chuckled jovially, "remind me to throw you a party for this victory".
Caius turned to him smiling but tried to glance at the elf. She had disappeared into the crowd walking out. "Yes thank you" he nodded, "such victories, even small ones are sometimes worth a party". Before Florens was able to say anything more Caius bowed slightly, "I´m sorry but I have a personal meeting to attend to. Let´s talk about this in later date" and walked into the crowd in haste before Florens was able to continue. That man could talk all night if given a change.
He hurried outside where the evening sun shot it´s last rays over Minrathous. A cooler breeze spoke of the coming night. Before the Magisterium, in front of the wide marble stairs stood a cart with Vaellanius family crest. Guards stood by it relieved to see him finally coming back. "Home" he said as he stepped inside.
Back in the tower Nazlik was in the summoning chamber playing with the blood red crystals they had brought from beyond the Eluvian. She was bored and while trying to find something to do she came across these crystals. Caius walked right in to see her juggling with three of them. "Please, put them down" he said calmly, "you are juggling with souls". "What?!" his comment startled Nazlik and she placed the crystals on the table in haste.
"Well not properly speaking, since they are all empty but one", He walked to the table. In the following silence Caius touched each crystal until he found the one he was looking for.
"This is the only one holding something I would call a soul, or a presence", he showed it to Nazlik. She recoiled further away from it when he brought it closer. "It is alright, just touch it and concentrate". Caius smiled and placed the crystal in her hand. She didn´t notice anything but the silent flow of the red substance inside the crystal at first, but then her eyes opened wide and she dropped it. Caius moved swiftly catching it just in time.
"It... it spoke to me!" Nazlik said horrified. "No, not actually spoke but.. it had feelings. I felt such a horrible loneliness..." she got tears in her eyes.
"You are so emotional these days" Caius said softly, "there are remnants of someones personality inside this crystal. Each of them can hold at least one". He raised it before his eyes looking it closely, "it is so fascinating.. I need to know how this works, I want to duplicate this feature".
"Please, let it just go. Destroy it" Nazlik said silently sweeping her eyes. Caius placed the crystal on the table. He took her hands gently and pulled her close with a loving smile. "I will do that, for you. But not right away. What ever is in there is completely mad. It can´t follow time passing so it gives me time to study it".
Caius wrapped his arm around her waist and slowly walked her out of the summoning chamber, "come love, let´s go get you something to drink. It will make you feel better". Nazlik blew her nose on her handkerchief. They walked to his study. Guards stood in attention as they walked by. Caius stepped to the silver tray on the side table while Nazlik closed the door. "Here, let me pour you some wine" he said over his shoulder grabbing a crystal glass.
Suddenly Nazlik gasped. Her surprised tone made Caius turn around fast dropping the cup, magical energy twirling around him. Eager to answer to his call. From behind his desk a red haired elf sprung towards the open window incredible fast leaving a trail of parchments behind her. Caius raised his hand and wall of ice grew before the window closing the way out. Elf turned around without pausing and in a one smooth move she threw a dagger at him and bolted for the door. Dagger bounced of his magical shield harmlessly. Nazlik stepped in front of the door closing the way and drawing her own dagger. The elf threw a dagger at her too while running. "NO!" Caius pulsated a repulsion field ricocheting the dagger mid-air into the bookcase and knocking the elf off her feet. She rolled back on her feet drawing yet another dagger."Oh no, not that again", he said coldly placing a glyph of paralysis on her.
Caius walked through a dank tunnel deep below the Vaellanius manor towards his dungeons with Nazlik, their footsteps echoing in the silence. A small magical light in his staff illuminated their way. Occasional drops of water fell from the ceiling. A guard stood in attention by the cell door as Caius pushed open one of the oaken cell doors reinforced with iron. A single torch in the tunnel shed some light inside through the bars in the small window. In the dark chamber the red haired elven woman sat in the corner on a pile of hay chained in the floor with black iron chains. Caius walked in and stood before her silently for a while watching her closely. She returned his gaze with a blank stare.
"Are you ready to talk now?" Caius asked calmly. The elf stared at him for a moment, "bas saarebas" she hissed. Caius chuckled softly, "so it is going to be like this then? Fine, we can work with that". The elf turned to stare at Nazlik for a moment, "ebost issala, Tal-Vashoth". Nazlik sneered at her, "katara vashedan, ashkost kata. Ashkost say hissra".
"What she said" Caius eyed the elf amused then at Nazlik. "She is called a Tallis" Nazlik said without looking away from the elf. Tallis seemed to consider something, then turned to Caius, "dathrasi, know this. You are involved in a matter that Ariqun finds important. Your companion did something in Seheron. We are here to avenge it".
"My companion?" Caius asked surprised. "Enchanter of Vyrantium". Caius said nothing. He gazed upon the elf for a while. "Can you tell me, why does an elf loose herself into the qun?" he asked curious.
"They saved me from the slavers, gave me purpose" Tallis said. "Purpose? And the life of a elf was not enough for you?" Caius smiled shortly at her. "I was born in Tevinter. Elves here are no better off" she responded. "No?" Caius puckered his lips, "And now you are just a tool. That is actually quite hilarious when you think of it". "Nehraa qun" Tallis whispered.
They heard a knock on the door. Torturer walked in to the chamber with a bag full of tools followed by two guards carrying a large table with chains. His apprentice followed him with a another set of tools and a folding seat.
Caius nodded at the man and turned to the elf, "qunari take pride of knowing how to break a man without magic. My employee here will demonstrate to you that we can do the same". He leaned towards Tallis with a cold smile, "it is not the goal, but the journey itself of which we should enjoy too, don´t you think? I know I am going to enjoy this. And afterwards I will introduce my magic to you".
Later as they were walking away through the tunnel Caius listened the cries of pain echoing from the cell. "I was going to hand this elf to the Imperator, but now I can´t do that. She somehow knows of my connection to Nerva. I need to warn him" he muttered to Nazlik.*
