Excellent. This is completely optional and you can use it or dismiss it if it doesn´t fit in your story, but I thought that Monkai´s father-in-law should intervene.

*Footsteps echoed in the dank dungeon corridor. Two men walked through it heading towards a specific cell. They stopped outside the monkai´s cell door. "Please, your honor. The stage is yours", Publius graciously nodded to the judge Tenvrae pointing to the cell.

 

Both men stepped inside the cell. The judge wringed his arms. He cleared his throat glancing at Publius first with a nervous look. He then proceeded to speak to Monkai. "It seems the charges against your highness were fabricated. We the tribunal have come to the conclusion that this trial is a farce. You have been cleared of all charges, I am really sorry for any inconvenience this has caused you". He then turned to look at Publius with a nervously expectant look.

 

Publius nodded to the man and the judge backed out of the cell looking at his feet turning in haste. His frantic footsteps could be heard from distance.

 

Publius listened at the door for a while then turned to Monkai with exaggeratedly concerned look on his face. "Magister Vaellanius sends his greetings and hopes to find you in good health". Publius couldn´t stand this upstart who had slithered his way into the family he was hoping to join, but he was given this task and he would do it to the letter. "Your esteemed wife awaits you in the tower of her father. Your presence is expected as soon as possible".

 

Without waiting Monkai´s response he turned around and walked out of the cell.*

Caius leaned on the arm rest, gazing at Vel contemplating. Silence lingered for a moment when Vel stopped talking. These two men stared at each other for a while. 

 

Caius broke the silence by standing up, "don´t move". He circled around his table and walked slowly behind Vel. "I really hope this does not hurt" Vel said squirming in his seat readying himself for what was to come.

 

Caius smiled shortly, his fingers started to weave a pattern in the air above Vel´s head. Small glistening sparkles appeared in the air to places where his fingers had been. A small sparkling net hovered above Vel`s head for a moment then started to go down. It disappeared the moment it touched Vel. Caius raised his hand above Vel closing his eyes, a slight glow appeared around his hand. 

 

"You are clean" Caius said putting down his hand, "no geas or spells on you". He turned around and walked to the silver tray by the side table pouring himself a glass of wine. "You can leave now, Livia will brief you soon". 

 

Vel sprang up from the seat smiling, "thank you boss, I need to find Publius. We have a lot of drinking to catch up".

 

Door slammed and Vel was gone. Young punk had no manners but he was a excellent rogue, a master with locks. Caius walked slowly to the window twirling wine in his cup. "So, our mighty Imperator thinks he knows my motives". A cold smile lingered on his lips for a moment, "good, in fact, excellent". 

 

A knock on the door interrupted his thoughts. "Come in" Caius turned around. Livia stepped inside, "I saw Vel storm through the manor, he is back from the dead I see". 

 

Caius walked to the table sitting down, "Imperator had him. Apparently I am a suspect now". Livia waved her hand, "bollocks, there isn´t a shred of evidence pointing at your direction. Only second hand speculations. Vel is not a witness . He resigned to become a mercenary. Your agents in the Ordo Silentia will combust if apprehended. What else is there? The power gems, nothing connects us to it. Only concrete left is the bard". 

 

"That is the tricky part actually. Now that my wife has passed away it looks unpleasantly suspicious. Especially when Nazlik is in the picture. Her current state would make it easy to believe such rumors", Caius took a sip of the wine. "It would most definitely cost me a lot of political support. And it could even bring forth a idea to question my allegiance. Which is something I do not need right now. The situation is volatile as it is already".

 

"So what will we do?".

 

"We keep placing evidence against the Imperator, but it has to be done with great care, it has to be plausible. Nothing too drastic, going full evil will only raise eyebrows. No, it has to look like he is hoarding power. Maybe wants to make a coup. And so that the liberal representatives of the Magisterium will need to get their hands on it. Something Maevaris Tilani might find. We´ll see if they keep supporting the Imperator". He took another sip of the wine, "slowly, one tiny step at a time. There is no need to rush. Besides that we will lay low, make it seem everything has stopped".

 

Caius placed his cup on the table, "in the mean time. I think it might be a good moment for me to pay a visit to our good Imperator. With a peace offering, something concrete. Collect me the information regarding enchanter Nerva. And send word to Gallus, I need him here".

 

"Done. Gallus is in the Valarian fields overseeing the training of the troops. It should take him a half day to get here", Livia nodded.

 

"Tell him to come see me when possible" Caius leaned back gazing the Seheron map on the wall, "step by step..."*

I think that's a problem with the Devs/Thedas in general. It's like what three potential Orlesian rulers in a row now that don't have any kids? Loghain only had one daughter, Maric slept around a lot apparently but only produced one legit and one bastard. 

 

It's almost like the noble families are actively trying to end their bloodlines.

Well I'm sure many have a fair mount of kids it's Just we see only one kid And have little exposure to families aside from Dorian. So for all we know Dorian could have a sibling that he doesn't mention for whatever but Mae could Just be a only child due to x reason

I'm pretty sure Dorian implies or outright says he's an only child in one of his convos. Certainly, if he had a sibling he didn't mention that would make his parents' problem a relative non-issue, write off the disappointment and hand the family legacy to the good child.

My guess is that they're going with the "stagnation" trope and the need for new blood

 

I'm sure Dorian is the only child, WoT2 mentions alot of mess up things he went through + the name of his mother, one would assume they'd mention a sibling mage or not.

"So, do you think the Imperator's plan will work?" Cedric rested both arms upon his greatshield. He was a hulking mountain of a man, encased within a suit of stark and rigid plate, save for his lack of helmet.

 

"By 'plan' you mean, hoping Magister Vaellanius will rediscover his good nature? Please." Davion spit off of the pier. The two watched as the dwarf, Grigor, harangued two laborers wheeling a cart of brass components up the boarding ramp. "He's a magister, all the same, if not a bigger wart than the rest. Once you've slighted their sense of pride, they'll butt heads 'til the day they die."

 

"What would you do?"

 

Davion slapped his hand upon the pommel of his shortsword, "Take 'em in the night. We still have some of those appropriated barrels of Saar-Qamek, yeah? Maybe launch some of that over those big walls, block of the gate... carve up anyone who tries to get out."

 

Cedric rubbed the back of his head. It was completely bald, immaculate, like the rest of his features. "Maker, didn't know I was talking to Horatia."

 

"Well. She wouldn't be wrong this time." Davion stepped to the side as another laborer walked by, carrying a metal chest. The raw Lyrium within prickled at his flank and arm, making the hairs stand on end.

 

"We must be sensible. A nonviolent approach, if successful, would be the most optimal. The most logical."

 

"'Logic' is not an attribute our enemies possess. Here, anyway. To be honest, I miss working in Seheron. Things were more... clear-cut." Davion exhaled, somberly looking out across the sea.

 

Cedric opted not to answer, shaking his head in silence. He opted to change the subject, "So we are going forward with these weapon constructs? Where are these ones going?"

 

"The next one is being placed at Qarinus, then at the for-" Davion stopped as a pulse of roiling crimson appeared in the distant horizon, quickly expanding before vanishing into the night. He stepped closer to the edge of the peer, frantically searching the vista of the Nocen.

 

Did you see that? Davion paused. Did you -- see -- that? He mouthed the words, felt the reverberation in his throat, and yet could not hear his own voice. Then, he realized, he could not hear anything. The shifting waters, the waves slapping the stone docks, the creating and yawning of the ship, all cast out of the world by an encroaching emptiness. He looked to the vessel; the dwarf, face flushed red, silently bellowed at the workers, oblivious, before clutching at his chest in shock. The laborers, looking at each other in confusion, clapped their hands and cupped and slapped their ears.

 

Davion turned around, to see Cedric with his mace drawn, still as a statue. He blinked rapidly, his mouth slightly ajar. A deep rumble, like a raging squall many miles away, was the first sound to return to them. A cacophony of voices suddenly filled the night; the enveloping silence had dissolved as quickly as it appeared. Then, in tandem, all voices ceased, as the sudden return of all noise stifled the men in their speech. They glanced about each other in bewildered reticence, as the waves jostled and rolled.

Could be also the same issue as in the real world. People with high socioeconomic status tend to have less children than those with lower income.

*kick* Caius felt that small kick against his ear. He turned to look at her belly and saw the little sole of foot sliding against her belly from the inside. "Our baby is so active" Nazlik whispered watching gently as Caius stared at her belly. Caius was amazed, he had not seen anything like this before since he and Mucia were never that close. When his daughters were born he had been fighting in Seheron every time. He reached out to touch that little foot. My boy is so strong, his chest swelled with pride, and strangely he felt his eyes tearing up. 

 

He turned to Nazlik climbing closer to her side in the bed. Leaning over that huge belly he gave her a soft kiss, "how are you feeling my love?". "Gassy" she smirked, "and everything aches. There is no good position to be in". "I will ask the healer to see what she can do" Caius said softly gliding his hand over her belly mound. 

 

Nazlik watched Caius silently. He was obviously mesmerized by this, she had no idea how much her pregnancy would affect him, but this was something new. "Caius" she whispered. "mm-hm" he said in his thoughts still touching her belly. "Caius, look at me" she continued gently taking his chin turning him to look at her. 

"I know you are doing something" she continued.

"What, what I am doing?" Caius responded surprised. "I know that look, that fire in your eyes" she whispered, "what ever you are doing. please stop it". Now she had his full attention, "please explain".

 

"I know you, and I know you are doing something. Something dangerous. For our sake, for our child´s sake. Please, don´t" she gazed into his eyes. Caius blinked, "I would never jeopardize you or our child, you know that".

Nazlik sighted, "I know, and I hope you remember that too. Sometimes you are so entangled in something I can´t even reach you. Like now. Please, stop it". She pulled him closer for a kiss. "I love you, I hope you remember what is important".

 

Caius walked down the corridor in his thoughts. Her words echoed in his mind. He could never get over it how observant she was, her ability read him was surprising. He stopped by the window to watch the children of the slaves playing in the yard. Little elven girl and a boy had a stick sword fight, the boy was winning. Caius stroked his goatee in his thoughts then sighted. 

 

Livia sat in her office reading reports. The afternoon sun was peaking through the window playing on her desk. There was a sudden knock on the door, then without waiting for a answer the door opened and Caius stepped in, "I think we need to postpone our move against the Imperator. At least until my child has been born".

 

"Are you sure?" Livia asked surprised of this sudden change, "I was just about to set the wheels in motion". "I am" Caius said with certainty, "I will inform you when the time comes".

"Al right" Livia shrugged. Caius stood there for a moment in his thoughts, then nodded, mostly to himself and left. He can sometimes be such a strange person, Livia thought.*

*Following the first rays of the morning sun Caius´ army commander Gallus Nepos rode through the second gate into the inner yard with ten fully armored riders tailing him. 

 

Gallus dismounted before the stables and left the horse in the hands of the stable boy. He removed his helmet gesturing his men to get off their horses, "wait here in the guards barracks". His steel blue eyes gazed at the battlements, walls and guards evaluating the place with a sharp military eye. Despite his gray hair and furrows on his face he moved lightly in his heavy battle armor. His armor had collected a layer of dust from the long ride, still the old veteran showed no signs of fatigue. 

 

Gallus pulled his gloves off dusting them while walking through the main door of the manor nodding at the guards. Inside he adjusted his sword belt and headed towards Caius study. This old veteran of the qunari wars had served as a Centurion in Seheron most of his life. 

 

He had achieved the title of Primas Pilus as a fearless and excellent military leader out maneuvering higher ranking officers, but his outspoken attitude and  mundane soporati background had prevented any promotions. Caius was impressed by his talent and the two men became friends. Gallus was one of the few people who could actually call Caius a friend.

 

"My friend, good to see you" Caius greeted him with a extended arm and warm smile shaking his hand. "And you as well. I received your message" Gallus said sitting down on the chair Caius pointed him to. "Care to have some wine?" Caius asked pouring wine to a cup. "Yes please, it was a dusty ride" Gallus took the offered cup taking a sip. "Mmm.. why is it that you have the best wine in the Imperium?" he asked looking into the cup. "I have wast wine fields, some is bound to produce good wine" Caius smirked.

 

Gallus gave a laugh. "To be honest, I have been away few months and already I see too much slacking. Guards need to shape up" Gallus said earnest, "I am going to kick some butt here soon. Too relaxed people".

 

"I´m sure" Caius nodded, "How is the training with the troops going?".

 

"The veterans I hired from Seheron have given your peasants soldiers a good spanking. Most of the Optio´s and Centurion´s are now veterans, enough to keep the army at least semi-professional".

 

"What about my praetorians?"

 

"Your new personal guard consists now only of veterans hand picked myself. I know them all" Gallus said with a hint of pride. "Good" Caius smiled gratified, "when will they be here?".

 

"They are marching here double time and should be within the city limits in a few moments", Gallus gazed out of the window, "they should be here by the afternoon".

 

"excellent, their new armors and weapons will be waiting for them in the barracks", Caius said, "who did you pic as a Optio for them?"

 

"Sestius Sulla, a laetan. He was a battle mage in Seheron. He is a vicious killer. Earned a nickname butcher there. Good soldier though. You will know him by the huge scar crossing his face sideways, his mouth was split by a qunari once" Gallus said, and just for a tiny moment he seemed to fall into old memories.

 

"I trust your judgement. However, I want you to accompany me this evening. You will be my guard commander for tonight" Caius said leaning back.

 

Gallus nodded, "that gives me time to prepare. If you don´t mind, I would like to go and shake up the barracks a bit now". Gallus drank his cup empty and stood up. "By all means, I will see you later" Caius smiled, "it is good to have you back".*

*Darkness, impenetrable darkness. Caius concentrated, focusing his own energy on the image of the dragon he had in his dream. Darkness stirred, resisted. Caius increased his power drawing on his deep reserves. His relentless power forced itself through the darkness slowly but surely. Still it felt not enough, the darkness bent giving ground, but it did not break. Caius called upon the demonic powers tied to himself through the binding process. There was a surge of energy, battle of wills. Caius pushed as hard as he could tearing up the darkness. It was somewhere here, what ever it was.

Then suddenly he was somewhere. There was a emptiness, but it was filled with a presence. A presence that filled the emptiness completely. Caius felt like he was standing by a mountain which had most of it covered in clouds. Only partially visible but still magnificent in size and power.

And the mountain had noticed him.

A presence filled his mind. So alien yet so familiar. He felt himself being studied, this power opened him up like a book going through every single detail. Caius felt like he was drowning under a ocean. The complexity of the presence almost broke his own mind in the process. He screamed in pain. He felt his mind shattering, loosing himself into the magnificent and omnipotent presence. Caius reached out grasping on his memory of Nazlik like a drowning man would grasp a straw, a anchor to keep him sane. Then suddenly he was free.

Something flared across the void. Contentment. The presence approved of him. Caius twirled in the nothingness collecting himself. "Who, what are you?" he finally formed the question in his mind. Amusement. Flash, dark dragonic form. Silence, which seemed to smother even the empty darkness.

Caius gasped, the thought of it boggled his mind. Could it actually be? "My lord Dumat?".

Caius suddenly woke on the stone table. The demons he had bound to circles around the table had died, exhausted of their energy in his struggle. The bodies of the dead slaves used in the binding ritual lie motionless on the floor. He sat up touching his face. Blood had flown from his nostrils.*

monkai walked into the sunlight casually from the prison. Curious at his predictiment he'd been sent to one of tevinter's prisons, accused of treason, and had a severe headache it felt like the magic in his body was contorting inside him itching to break free.

so who free is the fool arranged our lovely stay scorn joked he knew it was serious if she joked that either meant he was going to have a blackout or be killed neither was preferable.

"We are going to the manor we need to get something"

"Thank you gilas you may leave now" the lady said calmly then turning to her guest. "So not only was my husband imprisoned but now he's free most curious darkon this wouldn't have anything to do with the fact he's a rivaini ?" The lady spoke with tones cold and calculating tone.

"No small talk no, how are you or even a offer of cakes zara hehe" darkon said with a sadistic grin.

"Not for one who holds no alliances and works for his own advancement" she retorted

"Hmph pity but yes some groups find your little pet to be problematic he's not even a laetan he's at best a liberati so the fact he's a first enchanter in a poor circle is because they allow it... they simply making sure he stays in his place and there's a dirty rumour your family allows a abomination to run freely."

Darkon stood from his chair and straighten his coat and walked towards the door to leave. "Perhaps I might look into it or I might not this is getting interesting seeing monkai dancing in the wind I'm curious to what he'll do" darkon said as he left. His casual and indifferent tone and demeanor always left zara feeling ill he acted like a orlaisan but carried himself as tevinter. Truly a snake

*Caius paced around the hallway in anguish like a caged beast. For a brief moment he stopped gazing at the door hearing voices inside, a cry of pain? She needs me! He reached for the handle in haste but then hesitated. He clenched his hand in a fist pulling it back. She had been moaning the whole time, this was no different. He shook his head, what can I do? What can i do? This was so confusing for him, she was giving birth for their child and there was nothing he could do, he felt so helpless.

Time had come in the midnight, she had woken him up when her water broke. Caius had stormed around the chamber feeling like a headless chicken but Nazlik had calmed him down, despite the pain she herself was feeling. Few moments later the old midwife had appeared along with a young healer mage escorted by Livia. Caius had anticipated what would happen and had requested their presence in the tower. Now it had been hours and still the baby took it´s time. Caius had no real experience of this, he had never witnessed a birth despite his three daughters, for he had been fighting in Seheron each time they were born.

Then suddenly a silence. Caius stopped in his tracks listening carefully. Power flared up around him twirling and pulsating. Something is wrong, Nazlik! He rushed towards the door when suddenly it opened. Livia stood there smiling, "you can come in now".

The power disappeared in a flash. Caius cleared his throat and straightened his robes walking in the room ignoring Livia´s smirk, she had noticed the look on his face. There, in the center of the gigantic elaborated bed lie Nazlik, her hair and face were sweaty, along with her nightgown. She looked tired but happy, smiling at him. There was a small bundle in her arms.

Caius approached the bed almost sneaking, holding his breath as if any sound would destroy the moment. He sat next to her, there was faint noise from the bundle. Nazlik smiled at him whispering, "kadan, here is your imekari. You have a son". She reached out and placed the little bundle in his arms.
Caius stared at the baby stunned. A wave of sheer joy and happiness washed over him. He blinked and swallowed several times to keep back tears and that lump in his throat.

He could not take his eyes of the baby, the little boy was a human child. Except he had silver eyes and white hair. "He is beautiful" Caius whispered. He turned to Nazlik leaning to her for a kiss. "How are you feeling my love?". "I´m feeling fine, just a little tired" she smiled softly and yawned. "I will be right back" Caius stood up. "That boy is one handsome little man" the old midwife said smiling from the side, "he is going to be such a heart breaker with those eyes".

Caius walked slowly to the tower´s balcony holding the baby gently in his arms. He stood there watching the first rays of the morning sun appear over the horizon. "This, all this will be my legacy to you" Caius whispered showing Minrathous to the baby. "I will make sure of it, I swear will pave the way for your ascension to the throne". He gazed at the city then at the boy, "this will be your Imperium".*

Being both a mage and an elf, I have rather conflicted feelings about Tevinter. But I'd love to visit and get my hands on all those books! I shall wear a hat and do the human gorilla walk in an attempt to blend in. It would be refreshing to spend time in a place free of Andraste propaganda and muttering chanters.

I did too til I learned that evil can be good it's not always the means the goal if it's to better the world make things easier for those less fortunate. Granted there are flaws (I abhor enslavement) but deep in the imperium lies virtue. And rumour is that we are going north next game which implies tevinter

I was thinking more about this - it's probably been said already in 456 pages, but I didn't read them all: if one were a non-Dalish elf mage, selling one's self into slavery to a powerful Tevinter Magister might be preferable to being a Circle prisoner in Orlais-Ferelden. I presume that selling one's self requires an enforceable contract, therefore conditions and a buy-back clause. You'd have greater freedom of movement and some self-determination, could go outside, continue research with the greatest libraries and mages in the world, and have a family, unlike in the Circle, where you have no self-determination whatsoever, a bunch of hulking templars breathing down your neck for your entire life, and a phylactery, which is even worse than a slave-collar. We all know what goes on in prisons. There's no recourse for Circle mages, as far as I can tell - the Chantry should have some oversight over the Templars, but obviously fails. If I were imprisoned in a Circle, I'd be inviting in demons right and left.

 

In addition, preventing the Qunari from taking over Tevinter is in every mage's self-interest.

We all know what goes on in prisons. There's no recourse for Circle mages, as far as I can tell - the Chantry should have some oversight over the Templars, but obviously fails. If I were imprisoned in a Circle, I'd be inviting in demons right and left.

 

In addition, preventing the Qunari from taking over Tevinter is in every mage's self-interest.
