*Magical energy twirled in the ancient summoning chamber. Caius stood before the summoning circle, it was placed on a small platform above the chamber floor. The circle itself was huge, inside it there were four smaller binding circles surrounding one large positioned in the middle. The complex pattern of the summoning circles glowed with magical energy illuminating the dim chamber and Caius face. His apprentices stood in the shadows their arms extended adding their own energy into the flow chanting.

 

A black staff carved of dragon bone floated in the air, above the largest binding circle in the center of the large summoning circle.

 

The staff was black as night. two third of it was just a simple staff but in the end there were two dragons carved in the staff circling each other, ending face to face at the top. Between the dragons there was one blood red ruby with the blood like substance twirling wildly inside it. Both dragon heads held it in their mouths. 

 

Each other binding circle positioned around the one large had a rage demon in it. Dazed by the spells magical power surrounding them. There was a slight stream of magical energy flowing from the demons to the staff causing it to glow with dark light. Their life force was being merged with the staff.

 

A dazed slave was on his knees before the summoning circle, at Caius feet. Caius had a dragon shaped dagger in his hand, decorated completely with ancient runes. He started to cast drawing complicated patterns in the air with his hands leaving the air ripple with magical energy. He chanted in the ancient tevene words calling magical powers to his service. At the height of the chant Caius suddenly bent down cutting the throat of the slave with a swift move. Instead of gushing on the floor from the wound, the blood of the slave turned into a mist raising in the air while the body of the slave fell down to the ground. 

 

The misty blood twirled raising high in the air then turned into a vortex of red mist spiraling down to the floating staff. The magical chant of Caius had the air itself pulsate with power sending waves of energy across the chamber. Then something happened, a figure started to form from the red mist. It slowly took a shape of a strange horned woman with tail and hoofs. 

 

With a iron clad voice Caius continued chanting faster. His apprentices joined him adding their own voice in the spell. The desire demon felt the pull of the magical power and screamed of rage and pain. It grew suddenly into a massive monster roaring of rage, and this time with fear, causing the ancient chamber to shake bringing down dust from the ceiling. All in vain. The spell performed was perfect, and as Caius and his apprentices kept on casting the demon started to shake and twirl. The power roaring in the chamber pulled the demon down breaking its form. It turned again into a blood red mist spiraling into the blood red ruby embed into the black staff. 

 

For a while ripples of flashing power distorted the chamber, as the spell transformed the demon. The staff itself warped and pulsated in the air for a few moments. Then it was all over. Silence fell in the chamber, and the staff floated calmly in the air. All the life force and power of the demons had been embedded into the staff. The blood red ruby glowed softly in the darkness. 

 

Caius raised his hand and the staff flew into his pawn. It felt warm, and he could feel the presence of the desire demon in it. The staff seemed to emit a darkness on its own. A cold smile appeared on Caius lips.*

The Imperial Highway

She awoke to sunlight streaming through the shutters. She heard the sounds of the inn – servants bustling down the hallway, people talking in the dining room, the stomp of a horse in the yard. ‘I have awoken in so many different places just in the past week!’ she thought. ‘What strange turns my life has taken.’

 

She rose and noticed that her clothes had been cleaned and hung up. They smelled like lavender. She felt very strange and rubbed at the collar around her throat. “I’m a slave,” she told herself. “I’m a slave, with nice-smelling clothes, and a very irritating master.” A master who just then knocked on the door and opened it without a by-your-leave.

 

“Ready?” he inquired. “Breakfast awaits, then we must be off. Miles to go!”

 

“You’re awfully cheerful!” she remarked.

 

“Nothing awful about it! Don’t you look fresh - the wonders of a good rest, eh?”

 

Elowyn grimaced at his cheerfulness and followed him downstairs to the dining room. “Like a good little slave,’ she thought. She still planned to escape, somehow.

 

No opportunities presented themselves during breakfast. When it came time to mount up, Caradoc put her on her own mount, but the soldiers surrounded her. No way to simply gallop off. Perhaps if there were a distraction, she might try it.

 

She hadn’t realized just how much she relied on her magic. There’d never been a time in her life when she didn’t have it. Even before she’d gone to the Tower, her magic had been an intrinsic part of her life. She’d traveled in and out of the Fade, never thinking it was unusual until she became part of the Circle and learned that other mages required lyrium to travel across the veil. She hadn’t said a word about it, lest they take her one last freedom away from her. Her dream aboard the ship came back to her at that moment. Had it been just a dream? She couldn’t have crossed the veil without her magic.

 

When she was a child, before the Tower, she’d had friends on the other side of the veil. Perhaps they had been demons, but Elowyn didn’t like to think so. Her mother had always called her “hard-headed, the most stubborn child!” So she wasn’t as susceptible to demonic possession as some other mages. Despite having all those feelings which invited demons in: pride, anger, - oh, despair was a familiar companion! – she was also clever and caught the demons at their tricks. There was nothing more entertaining than beating the demons at their own game.

 

During her time in the Circle, she didn’t have the privacy to travel into the Fade or talk to her friends there. If she ever got this collar off, she could go back. Would her friends still be there? She would be in a different place, physically, and therefore in a different part of the Fade. She wished she could reach into it now, just at this moment. They were passing by some ruined buildings, and she wished she could see what they had looked like in the past.

 

Just then, she heard something whir through the air. One of the soldiers cried out. The horses took fright, whinnying and plunging. She had difficulty controlling hers. She was concentrating on keeping her seat when she felt someone grab the bridle. It was Caradoc. “Come on!” he said, urging his own horse into a canter and leading hers.

 

There were shouts, and she turned her head and saw that the cohort of soldiers was being attacked by bandits. One of them saw her and Caradoc riding off and gave chase. Caradoc drew his horse back next to hers, slapped her horse on the rump and said, “Keep going if you value your life!” She held tightly with her knees as the horse surged into a gallop. She glanced behind her and saw the rider draw level with Caradoc, who seemed to be slowing down. Almost too quickly to see, Caradoc leapt from his horse to the bandit’s, leaned forward and slit the man’s throat! Caradoc tossed the body off with the blood still spurting from the bandit’s neck and galloped forward to catch up with her.

 

Her ribs were killing her, and she thought she’d black out from the pain. “Whoa there, whoa,” Caradoc said calmly to her horse, once again grabbing the rein and slowing his own horse.

 

“That was amazing!” she declared. “How did you do that?”

 

Caradoc winked at her. “I’m a man of many talents.”

 

He slowed the horses to a stop. “We’ll just wait for them to catch up.”

 

“The bandits? Are you crazy?”

 

He just looked at her. “That was a rescue attempt,” he said simply, “and it failed.”

 

“What? Who were those people?”

 

Caradoc sighed. “Abolitionists. Misguided folks. And now they’re dead.”

 

Elowyn frowned. Someone had tried to rescue her. There was hope after all. They heard hoofbeats, and the rest of the soldiers caught up with them. None appeared to have any injuries. “Taken care of,” said one of the soldiers. “No chance against trained soldiers,“ Caradoc told her. “It’s a good thing they didn’t get hold of you – probably would’ve lost you again to smugglers.”

 

“I would have taken my chances,” said Elowyn. Caradoc gave her a long look.

 

“You don’t know just how lucky you are,” he said cryptically. “Ride on!”

They reached the Imperial Highway. Elowyn had never seen anything like it. Part of it was an aqueduct, the water flowing through channels supported by arches above the road. It was monumental, graceful and practical. Elowyn wondered why they didn’t have anything like it in Orlais.

 

It went on and on. The wonder of it started to wear off by the third day, when they turned off toward the coast. They took ship at Vyrantium. Elowyn marveled at the city. The architecture was so different from the Orlesian style. The people in the fanciest dress wore all black, though she saw workers and servants wearing other colors. Magic was everywhere. She could feel it thrumming around her and tried to reach out for it. But she couldn’t gather it to herself. The collar chafed. She was developing a sore where it rubbed her skin.

 

Caradoc and the soldiers had watched her closely the whole time they were traveling. She felt useless. She’d thought of herself as a competent person. She had skills beyond using magic, but they were of no use to her in this situation. Being able to write, to do research, even the exercise of her imagination was no use, as she couldn’t think of any way to escape. A few times, people had looked at her, but seeing her ears and her collar, they’d simply tutted and looked away. Even the elven slaves she saw treated her with scorn. She’d hoped for some kind person to notice her predicament, but they all seemed preoccupied with their own tasks. Caradoc noticed her staring at people.

 

“They’re not going to help you,” he told her.

 

“What is wrong with them? Does the air in Tevinter rot their hearts?”

 

Caradoc chuckled. “Do you see that elf over there, the one running with a message in her hand? What do you think would happen to her and her family if she stopped to help a stranger?”

 

“So self-interest prevails,” Elowyn said drily.

 

“Would you risk your life, especially when confronted with a normal situation? To the people here, you’re just another slave being escorted along the road.” It was true, she’d seen cohorts of soldiers riding and marching as they’d gotten closer to the city.

 

“Caradoc, who are you? Do you own me? How is it that an elf can have slaves?”

 

Caradoc shook his head. “I’m a slave, too. Just like you.”

 

“But I saw you pay the captain! You bought me, just like a druffalo or a nug.“

 

“Wasn’t my coin,” Caradoc shrugged. “Just following orders.”

 

“Then who is your master?”

 

“Mistress,” Caradoc corrected. “You’ll find out soon enough. We have a ship to catch.”

Her lips were soft and full of passion. Her eyes we're a amber hue and her skin fair... she was any man's ideal... but was wrong monkai thought. "Why are you taking her form your real form is better." He said. Shadows gathered at first forming a siloette and then from the shadow emerged a sickenly pale woman with crimson hair with green eyes that had a orange hue. "This better my dear?" Scorn cooed.
"Very... I'm sorry "he said meloncallically... "I should've been smarter"

"You should be we nearly died... we can stave of most wounds but not to that degree... I hold your life beyond my own... but I will not have it thrown away for some dead girl! Your life is mine to take as it belongs to me!" She said full of rage. Monkai knew it to be true he fought against her words for years... but now it was time to stop fighting and accept his partner fully

Agony racked his body waking him up from what appeared to be the minrathous healing room... only caius and he knew of this spot...
It was painful beyond words to breath... he stumbled covered in bandages black with blood it was a sign of his renewed contract of "love" with scorn. Symbiosis he called when you become a abomination but no change in personality.. but this is a new stage in the dynamic one he must study before... he goes on his spree of vengeance.

"****" monkai exclaimed vomiting blood as dark as the shadows... "we need to heal faster" he summoned what mana he could and casted a healing spell. It killed the pain and mended the worst of the damage... "This must be punishment for my failure, just keep me alive..." he thought sardonically.

Monkai finally made it to his old office there was clutter everywhere... just the way he liked it. He painstakingly put on his robe left to him on his desk by zara with a note the day before happy birthday love just a gift welcoming you back to civilization (not that you didn't get your previous gift) it's full rivaini fashion enjoy it. It took all him might to not cry... no more tears no more running no more sitting back while those weaker than him suffer... "magic exists to serve man never rule over him..." finally he learned what ment. What it meant to him. Adjusting his robe and removing the bandage from his face he went to his duties as first enchanter for nowh and to adapt to new power

*"You knew of this person", Caius deceptively calm voice echoed in the grand hall. He had brought Monkai to his own manor and arranged a official meeting in the great hall. A line of guards stood by the isle both sides where Monkai stood at the bottom of the stairs.

 

Caius sat in his throne decorated with Vaellanius crest at the top of the stairs, the family banner hanging on the wall behind him. Nazlik stood silently in the side of the throne in her glimmering armor. Both Livia and Gallus stood at the steps before the seat looking at Monkai indifferently, there were no hint of what they were thinking.

Silence lingered for a while as Caius gazed at monkai with cold eyes. "You knew and did not come to me about him". There was a underlying threat in his voice.

 

"And now she is dead... ", Caius whispered with a cold tone. " ...tell him".

 

Livia had a scroll in her hand which she pulled oped clearing her throat, her clear voice echoed in the hall. "Monkai, by the edict of Imperial Divine and the conclave of the Grand Clerics your marriage with Zera Ophelia Vaellanius is invalidated. This edict is put into operation starting today". She hushed down wrapping the scroll regaining her indifferent look.

 

Caius stood up, with a final tone in his cold voice. "Your position in the family is now on hold. Unless you deliver to me this assailant called Ugin I will have you removed from my house". He grabbed his staff and felt it softly vibrate of the power stored within. "And I will make sure you will lose your position as first enchanter, and the citizenship of Tevinter Imperium. The choice is yours". This was the signal for the guards, they grabbed Monkai and escorted him out of the manor.*

monkai left the manor ashamed and humiliated despite knowing this would happen... yet he felt free again slavery came in many forms, marriage, loyalty, his own spirit. He outstretched him hand to the sun feeling the blinding warmth.. our past caught up to us it seems hehe scorn chuckled finally realizing her purpose being met. "That it has my love that it has" he said as he departed his former home with a smile of sorts

It was a nice apartment by the tevinter underworld of standards didn't have a speck dirt on it. Monkai knocked on the door, " who is it private residence shove off" the voice behind the door said irritably. "Open the bloody before I beat you til candy comes out and beat you some more!" Monkai shouted

The door opened it was darkon only with a towel covering him "this had better be good I was giving a a good flogging " he said dropping his normally sarcastic tone.

"Sara's dead..." it was a erriee silence between friends. Darkon gestured his friend to come in and explain. The main room they'd entered was a orgy between elves , dwarves ,and humans enjoying their pleasures moaning and grunting... "EVERYONE OUT! OUT! "Darkon shouted pushing the last of the girls out while gesturing her to call and see him again.

Monkai explained what had happened... the fire, ugin, zara, and his exile from his house. It felt good to talk about this. "So this ugin fellow friend of yours?" Darkon joked. Monkai rose from his chair "bloody ******-son is everything a joke?"

"Easy boy I know of who speak" darkon said lighting a Kohl pipe to his mouth and taking a smooth inhale. He moved toward his desk taking a report covered in some residue that monkai didn't want to know remembering the previous guests.

sokai ugin a rivaini tribal of a dead clan. Historically they were a group of seer hunters taking them into their clan for blood magic purposes. Died out in 8:96 due to infighting. The subject observed is a mage of little skill magically but compensates by using explosives of sela Petra and has been involved in general terrorism, illegal slave trading, espionage and conspiracy for years in tevinter. Apprehend on sight

It was maddening that this bastard had a full dossier and didn't share it. "You son of-"
"Easy boy I don't read minds" darkon cut him off.

Monkai sighed in frustration... "I have be at the tower for my duties... I'm taking this report... thanks kon " monkai left the apartment seething and planing his next move.

the apartment was a mess ugin knew a close quarters fight with a mage was suicide but with a deft hand and spark of fire he tossed a grenade at darkon exploding in his face. Darting out into the street

Darkon coughed the miasmic smoke away inhaling it. it was a matter of time before he would feel the effects. "Clever little ****" he gave chase while grabbing his boots and coat.

With darkon chasing him, ugin feel the blood rush to his lions being the hunted always gave him a thrill that and wholesale murder. Dropping random orbs he laid a chokepoint hoping it would kill monkai's last support and so he would be able to proceed with his agenda.

As darkon caught up with ugin the orbs glowed and exploded with shrapnel and miasma ,killing nearby bystanders who looked at the chase with bilwildment . Had it not been for a quick barrier he would been killed there " NICE TRY RUNT TAKE THAN PARLOR TRICKS TO STOP ME!. He shouted

"I hope love hate to lose my sword for ya so quickly... that's what she said " ugin retorted hysterically laughing.

It was a warehouse spacious and free from distractions ugin had led them here the entire day creating havoc throughout the city. "Tired already... shame I was just getting warmed up!" Darkon said conjuring his mana to unleash a most devasting attack this ware house will his grave he thought.

Ugin whistled sharply as if calling for a dog. And from the shadows leaped a wyvern tightly gripping darkon's entire arm crushing bone and muscle. He shouted in pain and the more he shouted the more the beast mauled. " I see you met Susie play nice " ugin sarcastically said not stifling his insane laughter to the point of coughing. Darkon fought with the beast trying to keep it from killing him but his mana was gone it was the miasma from before it made him a mundane. But mana comes in many forms as he began summoning his mana from his blood a sigil on the beast's neck glowed... and with a clap from ugins hands a flash of red light devoured darkon.

Red smoke filled the air and left a coppery scent the beast was gone ugin would miss his pet but to him it was a proper and "funny" send off. "Blood and damnation I thought would smell like candy " he laughed

"Candy... I'll give you candy... a whole basket! " said darkon as the smoke cleared covered in blood. His entire right arm was gone as well his left eye. Most would be dead from that but a quick barrier saved him... most of him. He then used his pain and agony as a focus drawing upon the forbidden school of blood. He unleashed a torrent of bloody spikes at ugin. He tried to dodge the spikes but the speed was unreal many if they hit him would have surely killed him. Ugin threw three daggers coated in fire at darkon as a distraction but they we're doused by the blood and fell flat

Then came the city templars it was time to make his escape darting atop of boxes out a window into the aqueducts, even if he wasn't dead he was surely a none threat. His next target would hopefully be more fun

"My lord are you alright" asked the templar. "Just peachy..." darkon said as he collapsed and the templars tended to his wounds trying to stop the bleeding.

Minrathous - at last! This one is a bit long.

Elowyn had thought Vyrantium was impressive, but as they drew near to the towers of Minrathous, her breath caught in her throat. The city was huge! Whole buildings floated in the air above it. Towers rose into the sky, and waterfalls cascaded, tumbling from the highest levels to form reflective pools at the bottom, where they flowed over the edge of the island into the sea. As they drew closer, Elowyn could see gigantic carvings of dragons everywhere, beautiful and frightening. Then she saw the juggernauts, standing guard at the gates of the city. Her mind had boggled at their size – she had thought they were strange buildings at first, until their shapes had coalesced. They were simply enormous.

 

Caradoc stood next to her. His grin was even brighter than usual. “Home!” he said simply.

 

“For you, maybe,” she said.

 

“You’ll get used to it. You’ll be thinking of it as home in no time.”

 

“Never!” she shot back.

 

Caradoc stroked her collar. “If you’re good, this will come off. Then you’ll see what it’s like to be a mage in Tevinter. Makes me envious, in fact. You’ll experience parts of the city I’ll never see.”

 

“I thought everyone was a mage in Tevinter.” 

 

Caradoc smiled wryly. “Don’t believe everything they told you in Orlais. Most of the citizens have no magic at all. Who do you think empties the chamberpots?”

 

“Elves.”

 

“There are some human slaves, too. Pity the poor humans who have no magic. They’re worse off than yourself.”

 

“Strange.”

 

“Indeed. Just remember who your friends were, when you get high and mighty.”

 

Elowyn made a dismissive noise. “High and mighty elves in Tevinter? You’ve got to be kidding me.”

 

Caradoc rubbed her shoulder, almost affectionately. “Just don’t forget me.”

 

“How could I? You’re too irritating to forget.”

Odd to think she’d developed some affection for her captor. What did they call that again? Kirkwall syndrome? A term used to describe, contemptuously, how some mages fell in love with Templars. ‘Guilty as charged!’ Elowyn said to herself, thinking of Guy. Thinking of Guy, whom she’d left on the ground, stabbed by his own brother and wounded by the Red Jennies. Left him to die. ‘What kind of friend am I?’ she castigated herself. ‘I expected some Tevinter stranger to help me, and I couldn’t even save my best friend.’ She choked back the tears that were always just below the surface of her thoughts.

 

Caradoc had put her in some kind of gondola that hovered over the ground. “You’re not coming with me?” she asked him in astonishment. He shook his head.

 

“I’ll see you again. Be good!” He pulled the curtains closed, and she felt the gondola lift.

 

Elowyn peeked out of the curtains and saw other gondolas rising and falling. There was something fade-like about Minrathous, the way things floated, the way that magic pervaded everything. She could almost see it, like mist flowing through everything around her.

 

The gondola stopped, and she pulled the curtain aside. A man in livery was hurrying toward her. He helped her out onto a platform attached to an ornate building. He bowed and gestured her forward with an arm outstretched. She walked toward an enormous doorway. Statues of dragons snarled on either side. The building appeared to be carved of different kinds of stone, faceted in geometric designs. It was an odd combination and felt very foreign to her.

 

The doors opened as she drew near. She stepped into an equally enormous foyer with a bubbling fountain at the center. The foyer opened onto a courtyard enclosed by delicate columns. Another person in livery appeared and ushered her silently across the courtyard to the side. She admired the exotic trees and flowers as she passed. Someone was playing a lute. The music mixed with birdsong and drifted across the flowers like a heady scent.

 

She and the servant entered a room airy with windows. Her feet sank into luxurious carpets. The walls were painted with frescoes, and she blushed as she realized they depicted licentious scenes. One of the subjects in the painting appeared to have enormous… horns on his head. Colorful birds flitted in golden cages arrayed around the room along with silken sofas layered with tapestried cushions. 'Kitty and Sean could make a fortune selling to these people!’ she thought. She heard someone come into the room and turned to see a shemlen woman, tall, slim and regal, dressed all in glistening layers of black silk and damask. She reminded Elowyn of the Marquise, Guy’s stepmother Eugenie, only this woman had dark hair and eyes. The lady smiled sweetly. Just like Guy’s stepmother. Elowyn felt the hairs on the back of her neck prickle.

 

The lady rustled closer to Elowyn and held out her hand. Elowyn reluctantly pressed it, and the woman said, “I’m so glad you made it here in one piece! I heard you had a little trouble on the way.”

 

“I’m glad, too,” said Elowyn. “You must be Caradoc’s…”

 

“Aurelia Caracalla, Magistra. You’re Elowyn? Do you have a family name?”

 

Elowyn startled at the name – hadn’t the Marquise referred to her friend as Aurelie? How had the slave traders arranged this transaction? She managed to say her family name, “Adaran.”

 

“Shall we sit down?” The Magistra gestured toward a sofa. She rang a little bell on a side table, and a servant hurried in. “Some of the sparking Castes Green, and pastries,” she informed the servant, who turned and left before Elowyn could get a good look at her. Elowyn took a chair opposite and sat gingerly on the edge.

 

“Do you know the Marquise then?” Elowyn asked.

 

“The Marquise du Bessay? She’s a dear friend of mine!”

 

“How did… could you explain how I ended up here? They put a bag over my head!”

 

“I’m sorry about that. Such rough folk. I hope that Caradoc treated you well?”

 

Elowyn blinked at this dismissal of her hardships. “He was solicitous.”

 

“It’s simple: Eugenie informed me that you had disappeared after that unfortunate incident. There is nothing that happens in Orlais without her knowledge. She simply used her connections to locate you, and my people picked you up on the other side. It all worked out beautifully!”

 

“Except that I still don’t know why I’m here, or why it was necessary for you to kidnap me!”

 

“Perhaps the smugglers were a little creative in their methods. They’re not used to dealing with gentle folk after all.”

 

Elowyn frowned and looked down at her wrists where the rope had bound her. “Guy had intended to come with me,” she said sadly.

 

“It’s unfortunate… Poor Eugenie! I don’t know why the Orlesians put up with these troublemakers. That sort of thing wouldn’t get off the ground in Tevinter,” stated Aurelie.

 

“That’s reassuring,” Elowyn replied sardonically.

 

The servant arrived with a tray and poured two glasses of wine. Elowyn tried to catch her eye as the servant handed her a glass but the elf glided away. Elowyn took a sip of the pale green wine. It was bubbling and crisp, with a slight sweetness.

 

“Lovely, isn’t it?” said Aurelie. It’s a ’23. I snapped up the whole vintage!”

 

Elowyn agreed, and Aurelie offered her a pastry. They looked delicious, but Elowyn had little appetite. She was swimming in treacherous waters and was afraid of being lulled into submission by the tasty treats. She took one more sip of the wine and put the glass down.

 

“Now, let’s talk about your contract.”

 

“Contract?”

 

“Yes, tedious but necessary.” Aurelie made a little moue of distaste and handed a scroll to Elowyn. “My clerks drew it up. It states the terms of your employment.”

 

Elowyn scanned the first few paragraphs. “It says ‘slave’ here, right in the first line! Right under ‘Conditions of Servitude.’”

 

“Yes, yes, but read a little further. You’ll see there are protections: the purchase price will be invested for you, and you have a buyout option after ten years – that’s the usual duration.”

 

“Where’s the part about sacrificial blood magic victims?” Elowyn asked sarcastically.

 

“Paragraph 22, section 3,” stated Aurelie without blinking an eye.

 

“Is that standard? I’d like to add ‘and family members’ to that section.” Elowyn realized she was actually talking terms and wondered how she’d been drawn so far in to this discussion.

 

“That can be arranged.” Aurelie rang the little bell again and gave instructions to the servant. Elowyn read the part about living arrangements.

 

“It says here that I will be living with the family, though travel will be required ‘at times.’ Don’t mages live in the Circle then?” she asked.

 

Aurelie laughed. “We’re all mages! Well, not all of us, but anyone who counts. Our Circles are not prisons the way they are in Orlais and Ferelden. Think of them more like universities. You can live and work there, but no one is forcing you to be there. If you check Paragraph 33, you’ll see that you’ll have access to the Circle resources – libraries, magical apparati, etc. – but you’ll be working directly for me. There’s a non-disclosure clause, of course.”

 

“What will I be researching exactly?” asked Elowyn.

 

“We can discuss that after you sign the contract. Ah, here she is.” Another person dressed all in black appeared, carrying a scrollcase and penbox.

 

She addressed the clerk, “She wants to add a familial conservation addendum.”

 

“Which degree of kinship, exactly?” asked the clerk.

 

“All of them,” said Elowyn.

 

“Are you actually married?” asked Aurelie, looking concerned.

 

“No, but in future. It does say in here, let’s see, paragraph 28, that I am ‘allowed to marry and have offspring’ provided it doesn’t interfere with my duties. That’s rather vague.”

 

“Oh, that’s standard as well. Many researchers are happy to have the excuse. Duty calls! Very handy.”

 

“I see.” Never having been in a relationship, Elowyn had never considered the necessity of wiggling out of one. “What happens if I don’t sign this contract?” she asked.

 

“That would be unfortunate. You’d be sent back, with costs deducted, of course.”

 

“Sent back?”

 

“To Orlais, where, need I remind you? Apostates are hunted down and beheaded. Dreadful!”

 

“So, I sign the contract, I work for you, keep your secrets, and in ten years’ time, what happens?”

 

“You may sign another contract or buy out your indenture and apply for citizenship, or leave the Imperium. All of your research remains with me, though as it says in paragraph 36, a percentage of any proceeds goes into your account.”

 

The clerk handed her the familial conservation addendum which specified that none of her first or second degree kin by blood or marriage could be sacrificed by a member of the Caracallus family. ‘Whew, that’s reassuring,’ Elowyn thought t herself. It was still better than the Circle, where there was no agreement guaranteeing a mage’s safety. The Right of Annulment could be declared any time, and all the mages slaughtered. 

 

“I’ll give you a little time to think about it,” Aurelie said, getting up and walking to the doorway, where she conferred with the clerk in a low voice. Elowyn examined her alternatives: sign the contract and commit to being at the beck and call of the Caracallus family for ten years, or live the life of a fugitive? If not for the word ‘slavery’ in the contract, it would appear to simply be a work arrangement. The slave word bothered her. Elves in Orlais were poor, but they were technically free. Still, a mage in Orlais was never free and lived in constant fear. Her whole life at the Circle had been dictated by other people, so there was little difference, except that here she would have access to all the resources at the disposal of the powerful magisterial family, some freedom to travel, and – she re-read paragraph 11 – freedom of movement within the city as it pertained to her work, meaning she could go outside whenever she liked. All in all, it was a better deal than either living in an Orlesian Circle or running from Templars. She doubted that the Templars could pursue her to Tevinter. They Chantry would probably be happy if all the mages left Southern Thedas.

 

“I'm not signing anything until if you remove this collar.”

 

Aurelie consulted with the clerk again, rang the little bell, and told the servant to fetch someone. “Just a moment,” she said to Elowyn.

 

Elowyn was surprised to see Caradoc enter the room. Her belly did a little somersault, and she felt blood rush to her cheeks. At that moment, she stepped outside of herself and was disconcerted to see herself so flustered, especially as Caradoc stepped closer to her. She shivered as he touched the back of her neck.

 

“Sorry, I guess my hands were a little cold,” he said. His hands were warm, but she decided to bluff.

 

“Just happy to get this thing off.”

 

Caradoc did something to the back of the collar, and the tension around her throat eased. Her mana flowed back into her body. It felt like she’d been resurrected from the dead: all her senses sharpened. Even the air tasted fresher and sweeter. She wondered if she’d been lulled into this situation by the effect of the collar. Like a Tranquil, she’d been agreeable to everything commanded of her. She felt angry with herself for not fighting back when the abolitionists attacked and for passively being led into this room and sitting down with the Magistra.

 

She glanced at Aurelie who looked surprisingly nervous. Don’t be fooled! Elowyn told herself. She’s a consummate actor.

 

“You are free to go,” said Aurelie, “but I hope you’ll stay. There’s so much we can learn from each other.”

 

Elowyn glanced at Caradoc, who was watching her intently. She tried to read his expression. Aurelie noticed her scrutiny and said, “Caradoc works for me. Would you like to ask him about it?”

 

“Will he be punished for telling the truth?”

 

“I didn’t achieve my present position by relying on unwilling servants,” stated Aurelie. “I’ll leave you two alone for a moment.”

 

She flowed out of the room with the clerk and closed the door. Elowyn turned to Caradoc.

 

“What is it that you do for the Magistra, besides buying slaves, that is,” she asked him.

 

“I’m what’s called a Fixer. I make things happen.”

 

“Like a steward?” she asked.

 

“Not exactly. Think of it this way: your Divine has people called Hands, does she not? Think of me as the hand of the Caracalla family, with Magistra Aurelia as its head.”

 

“Where is its heart?” asked Elowyn slyly. Caradoc smiled.

 

“Where indeed? And its hair and its legs. I can tell you where its stomach is!”

 

Elowyn laughed. “How about its mana?”

 

“That would be you. And all the other mages, of course,” he added quickly. “I can tell you this: the Magistra is one of the most powerful mages I have ever met. You could learn a lot from her.”

 

“What about all these stories of Tevinter magisters sacrificing elves for blood magic? The contract spares me that, but I couldn’t live with myself if I participated in the suffering of other people,” she said.

 

“I can’t guarantee that you won’t have to kill anyone,” said Caradoc, “but only people who threaten the family or attempt to steal or sabotage research. Use of blood magic is a sign of weakness. It shows a lack of confidence in a mage’s abilities. Should the Caracalla family be known to use blood magic, it would signal desperation to our enemies.”

 

“So they’ve never used it?”

 

“They have not sacrificed a person for use in a blood magic ritual while I have been working for them,” said Caradoc carefully.

 

“So they’ve used blood magic then, but not actually murdered anyone for the power,” she replied.

 

“Is there harm in using your own blood for power? Or that of a willing donor? Isn’t it better to know how it works than to pretend no one uses it? I am not a mage. You can ask the Magistra these questions.”

 

Elowyn sighed. She wasn’t going to apologize for asking. She’d been told her whole life that the evil Tevinter magisters sacrificed elven slaves to power their rituals. She needed to know the truth.

 

“Why do they want me, specifically?” she asked.

 

“That is simple: the Magistra is friends with Her Grace Eugenie de Penthièvre du Bessay. When the Magistra asked her friend to help her find an expert in certain aspects of magic, the Marquise recommended you. There was no nefarious plot involved.”

 

“Except for the kidnapping part.”

 

“We don’t routinely abduct promising young mages,” he replied. “As I’ve explained, the sailors went a little overboard, so to speak. Can you complain about your treatment while in my care?”

 

“You didn’t remove the collar! You knew how, the whole time I was with you, but you left it on.”

 

“Should I have risked removing it and having you attack me? I was there to protect you, not to kill you.” Caradoc was looking quite bothered by this. She hadn’t felt she could upset him, he’d seemed so calm, almost cold.

 

It was difficult for Elowyn to argue with him. Growing up with the Templars watching had taught her to try to please people so they’d leave her alone. She went over to the window and looked out at the floating buildings. Just then, something flew by. “Is that a cow?!”

 

Caradoc joined her at the window. “Looks like Faustia is experimenting again.”

 

“With cows? I wonder if that’d work with druffalo?”

 

Caradoc smiled and put his hand on Elowyn’s shoulder. “See? Bet you didn’t have flying cows in Orlais! You could go down in history as the first mage to make druffalo fly.”

 

“Well, how could I turn that down?”

 

“Listen, I know that you’re feeling alone in a strange place and that you’re unsure whom to trust. But I hope that you’ll take into account the courtesy we’ve shown you so far, and that you’ll stay.”

 

Elowyn looked into his eyes and felt it was very unfair to have such a handsome elf deliver this message. She asked herself if she’d be so inclined to say yes if he hadn’t been so attractive. Ten years was a long time. She glanced out the window once again and reached inside herself for her mana. She felt it flow into her hands and respond to all the magic infused throughout the city. Her hands vibrated, and she opened them to find a scarlet dragonfly, which flew out through the window and away through the sky.

 

“Alright,” she said, “I’ll sign the contract.”

It was night the candles in the manor were light one by one to create a atmosphere of romance. Zara was pleased at monkai's return despite the allegations of treason and other crimes it was a political marriage yes after her previous paramour was sent to fight the qunari.. but after knowing him she grew to love him and his reformist and nonconformity to tevinter. It was a welcome breeze,while she slipped into her night gown readying herself for her husband a loud bang came from the door. "Andraste's womb at this hour?" She said.

Zara answered the door,revealing a courier covered in rivaini jewelry and piercings. "package for a zara vallious and ragin monkai "the courier polity stated smiling.

"I'm zara thank you how much will it be?" She replied grabbing her coin pouch. With a sneer the courier said "your life Milady " the courier threw the package at zara knocking her down. He then jumped on top of her putting all his weight on to her. "I'm going to enjoy this... you might not!" The assailant cackled, he then bit her neck drawing blood and as he raised his head blood streamed from her neck into his mouth. "GET OFF!" zara exclaimed summoning mana and releasing it into a telekinetic force sending him into the ceiling and landing on the ground.

"Oh you I like and I thought it would be a boring job" the courier joked regaining his composure. "Who are you to lay a hand on the heir to house vallinoius"

"A simple man who dreams of destruction and madness to a fellow countryman and all that he holds dear" the courier cackled. Zara wondered why would anyone go after kai he was a pacifist bordering on cowardice at times and kept a low profile. So you we're we're the one who brought back to minrathous and framed him."

"Aye I did wasn't cheap telling the guards bout him cost a nice sovereign or six" the courier said smiling.

Zara was enraged that a fool like him would embarrass her and family, combat magic wasn't her forte but she figured she could take a mundane. She moved her hands gesturing mana to unleash a fist of gravity thought destroy him. The courier clapped his hands and the package that he'd thrown glowed red and a thunderous roar erupted from it enveloping her and the manor.

Gasping for air she awoke groggy and sore ,zara scanned the room she was a caius's tower in her old room. She felt hungry it felt like she asleep for months but it had only been a week. She stumble from her bed wincing in pain from inactivity. Just then the door burst open it's her sisters cassi and miril they were ecstatic that their sister awoke

"Oh thank the maker your awake much has happened " she rapidly explained forgetting to breath. Cassia knocked her head with her staff telling her to slow down. "Perhaps I should be the one to tell her... you deliver this to you know who." Cassia gave miril a covered pole like item and shooed her to to her task.

*The slum. Loud hoarse laughter echoed in the smoky air of the sleazy tavern cutting through the general gabble filling the air. Men and women of the lowest class of the Imperium filled the space drinking and feasting with the few coppers they could muster. Soporati, liberati and occasional slave took their meager living into this place to momentarily drown themselves in the stinky strangely colored swill people here called ale to forget their lives. Ladies and gentlemen of questionable reputation shuttled between the tables preying for poor saps ready to be parted from their coin, willing or unwilling.

Against one of it´s slanted walls Publius sat by a small table on a wobbly seat. He did his best to keep his face hidden under his hood, this was the least place he wanted to be seen. He balanced in the shaky seat and tried to avoid placing his hand on the strangely stained table. Publius didn´t want to think of what those stains were made of, since the odor raising from the table was nauseating enough.
A boisterous laughter escorted Vel approaching the table. Publius shook his head, Vel had stopped to tell someone one of his greasy jokes surely.
Publius could see how the young rogue crossed the room with the easy cat like walk of his. Vel had slender but muscular body, which he had no problem showing to ladies, and almost oily long raven black hair tied in the back of his head in a ponytail. A constant playful smile lingered on his sculptured facial features, and a teasing sparkle in his large dark almost puppy kind of brown eyes. All in all he was a man who knew women liked what he had.

The young rogue balanced with two pints finding a safe route through the tightly packed tables. Somehow he managed to pinch each tavern wench on the way while coming to Publius despite holding those two large pints. Just before he sat down a empty cup flew at him but Vel avoided it gracefully sitting on his seat. The barmaid shook her fist at him promising a retribution, Vel sent a kiss in response to the angry woman.

"She loves me" he smirked at Publius placing the other pint before him, "they all do". "Why are we here?" Publius hissed silently trying to keep his face in the shadows of his hood. "What do you mean, why we are here? To get royally drunk!" Vel bumped him in the ribs with his elbow with a wide smile. "I told you so". He leaned closer to Publius whispering like a conspirator, "that Lucia over there, the brunette elven wench, she has been eying you from the moment we came here. I think you are set for the night".

Publius shivered, "no.. just no". "Oh I´m sorry. Is your highness too high and mighty for the ladies here?" Vel leaned back imitating Caius terribly well with a pretentious resentful look on his face. "I never said I would sleep with some knife ear!" Publius snapped at him, "you really think it would improve my station if I would mess around sleeping with what ever around the city?".

"Oh right", Vel snapped his fingers amused, "you still hope boss will hitch you up with Miriel? Not going to happen brother, better enjoy your life while you still can". He leaned forward slapping Publius in the shoulder causing him to fumble around for support as his seat sifted creaking threateningly. Publius glared at Vel but remained silent, he took a careful sip of the pint. The bitter taste made him grimace.

"I´m sorry I didn´t stay looking for you", Publius said after a moment of silence. "No need to apologize" Vel waved his hand, "how could you have helped me? If you would have stayed we both would have ended up in a meeting with the Imperator". He took a long sip of his pint wiping his lips into his sleeve, "believe me, you wouldn´t want to do that". Vel burped with a indifferent look. Still, deep inside he was touched of his friends concern.

"I do not fear him" Publius said gloomily. "Of course not my fearless friend", Vel smirked, "still I´d rather not find a new mage friend to torment. It is such a drag".
Publius gave him another glare, "I am very powe..".

Vel interrupted him slamming his pint into the table causing Publius to grab his in haste before it fell off the table. "I just remembered! I saw Caradoc the other day, he still won´t duel me. Locks, love and song, my great challenge" he grinned.
"But, I was still able to fish some information from him. Apparently Caradoc was in the process of bringing this new promising mage talent from Orlais. Some elven lass. Magistra Aurelie has extended her reach to south for new talent it seems". Vel leaned back with a dreamy look on his face. "That woman..she is such a dream, mmm... the things I could do with her...".

Publius punched him in the shoulder cutting his daydreaming quickly, "you better keep your pants on with her, master would not look kindly your play with her". Vel rubbed his shoulder with a offended look, "Hey! Boss knows me, unlike some people it seems".
Publius rubbed his chin, one of the ways he imitated Caius gestures, "maybe this is something master should know. Magistra Aurelie rarely goes into such lengths just to bring someone in her service...".*

“The most powerful woman,” Aurelie corrected him playfully.

 

“The most powerfully beautifully delicious mage,” added Caradoc, biting the little bit of flesh between her shoulder and her breast.

 

“Ouch!” she yelled, pulling his long golden hair. He flashed her a wicked grin.

 

“He’s just sore because you stole that barmaid out from under his nose,” she said archly.

 

“What can I say? The barmaids can’t resist my elfy charm.” He cocked an eyebrow. Then his face grew a little serious, “He mentioned the new girl.”

 

“Already? I was hoping to keep my new apprentice under wraps awhile longer. Word travels quickly!”

 

“I told him the girl was in danger of failing her Harrowing, and that you’d whisked her away as a favor for a friend. That should put him off the scent.”

 

“She is naïve, it’s true. The Minrathous Circle already believes the Orlesian mages are gelded by the Chantry. Their faith in Tevinter superiority to the southerners is so firmly rooted that no one will suspect my real purpose in bringing her here.”

 

“She is a pretty little thing though,” said Caradoc, rubbing his chin. “Have to keep any eye on her. Fuficius has already set that ridiculous fop, Dio, at her.”

 

“I almost feel sorry for the boy.”

 

“Don’t. His Magister is a pompous twit. I have a feeling that Dio will be running that house one day. Soon, if Fuficius keeps making gaffes.”

 

“Darling, this is my one day away from the Senate. Let’s not speak of politics.”

She strolled through the tower heading to monkai's office, he was "channeling" as he called it but he was sleep from various books on the arcane and documents. It amazed her how he could comprehend teverne despite not being able to speak it. She picked up a book from the desk Abominations and symbiotic relationships it was his grimore than he'd penned when he arrived in minrathous... it was a boring read. Miriel shook him awake " package dear elder brother" she said whimsical in tone. Monkai awoke drool covering his chin hair. "You shouldn't call me that I'm a exile remember " he said wiping the drool.

"I know but family is family " she said knowing the truth. "Anyway package " she presented the covered rod. Monkai took the parchment off revealing his staff from the manor it was cover in soot hiding it's silverite glow. "Perfect thought I lost this thing" he looked upon the ornamentation a snake eating it's tail... to him it meant everything would work out. "Thanks squirt must have been a hassle, how is everyone" monkai asked. "Father is still furious, cassia is still mean and sarcastic, I'm good and zara is dead just another Tuesday" monkai found it odd she'd mentioned zara's death but put it out of his mind. "Well get going then it's still business hours" monkai reminded her. "Nope full day off I just wanted to talk bout how you were". Monkai began to talk bout his findings from darkon the day before and how his new research was. He found it easy to talk with her they may have not been blood... but they were family in the fullest sense of the word they talked for hours

Monkai shouted telling miriel to wait while went to investigate. It was darkon his was injured badly if it hadn't been for his coloured swearing he wouldn't recognize him. "Kaffas! Get me the first enchanter pay me no heed" darkon shouted " I'm here kon what happened to you?"

"Your boyfriend's pet did this! Long bloody story point is he's coming been running all night " darkon warned. Monkai couldn't help but smile he's making things easy for him... but he wondered was he ready he only trained with new power for a week..

Just then a explosion of red light erupted in the training ground . Its was ugin monkai saw from the with blowing a kiss toward him. Monkai brother! Come down here and pucker up or I'll just kill this apprentices... they aren't to fun though". Ugin cried laughing, the Templar guards stationed at the circle charged at him intending to end his madness. Ugin threw a few vials into the the templars faces, the screamed in agony as the acid burned their faces. Ugin laughed moving toward a girl she had to be no more than nine "aww don't be sad I'll make it better" he reached it his pocket rustling for something but was struck and flung by lighting "hands off the kid" monkai said his cloak flowing in the wind.

"Relax friend it was just candy " ugin joked

"Monkai wait up I can help." Meriel said running out of breath. "Get back inside NOW!" Monkai shout. Ugin threw a orb at miriel it's was as if time had slowed to a crawl. It took everything he had to shield her from the exploding light. His robe that always immaculate was shredded and singed despite brunting the worst of it.

"Kai... are... " she shyly asked. "I told you to run didn't I.." his knees buckled he wasn't adjusted to the new power increase yet every spell he had was taxing.

It was difficult babysitting miriel from ugin's assault if she had just stayed inside he wouldn't be in such a pitiable state. His eyes was swollen shut due to a piece of shrapnel hitting his face he hoped his eye was still their.

"First enchanter!" The Knight commander said creating a protective line in front of miriel. "Keep her alive at all costs and if you die trying get back up". The templars nodded in agreement. Ugin cackled at their solidarity "so cute " he threw another set of explosives. Monkai threw up another barrier deflecting the blast. He then drew his staff extending it and conjured his mana throwing pure entropy at his for. Ugin dodged the blasts reaching for a grenade but realizing he had run out and traded for knives throwing those instead. One had hit his leg and another grazed his neck missing his juglar he needed a break.. "come on love entertain me " ugin said as he charged directly at him. "Your sodding insane you know that" monkai said as he charged up for another volley.

Monkai launched a massive bolt of entropy it hit ugin creating a deep hole threw his right side. Ugin finally stopped.. it couldn't have been that easy... ugin stood up cracking his neck. "Whoo that was fun!" He said ,outstreching his hands began summoning multiple demons. They were demons of unknown origin them we're odd to look upon.
