Tevinter is the oldest human civilisation on Thedas, the source of many good and bad things. They started our relationship with the Dwarves, they institutionalised human prejudice against Elves, spread their language architecture and culture throughout the world. While it is not the centre of the world, it is an intrinsic part of it and to lose it would be like losing a part of ourselves.
Also not to mention that they are the only people smart enough to realise the threat the Qunari pose.

They are also decadent and self defeating.

So are humans in general yet they are doing pretty well.
Ferelden had the Warden, Kirkwall had a Champion and Orlais an Inquisitor. Tevinter needs some PC magic to save it and make it better.

Although Orlais will always be Orlais, I'm glad that we can help improve it by putting Briala in charge.

Likewise, although Tevinter will never be flowers and rainbows I hope we can replace the current archon with someone that wants reform.

EDIT:

Also, I kinda want the entirety/the majority of DA4 set in Minrathous. Like a DA2 done right.

Doesn't the Tevinter Imperium consider non-mages to be lab rats? Isn't that how the first darkspawn was born. A couple mages decided to sacrifice a bunch of non-mage slaves in some ritual? That kind of government isn't worth saving.

The Archon can't be selected from the Magisterium.  They vote him in, if he hasn't selected an heir, but it can't be one of their own

They sacrificed a bunch of slaves (whether the slaves were mages or not is not specified) to get into the Golden City. The whole Blight thing wasn't intentional.

And that government kinda is gone. That was the high priests of the Old God cults in charge of that particular expedition. They got killed off, their successors got taken out one way or another during Hessarian's Transfiguration when Andraste happened later. The position of Archon and Magisterium still exists, as does slavery, but its not exactly the same setup as the time when the City was breached.

But the only way to go from the top is down. And that's a human mage only origins. Maybe something like the Couslands from Origins, where we start big, suffer a great loss, but come back better than ever.

I was having a thought about the next game taking place in Tevinter, mostly about the possibility of playing different races.

What if, instead of playing different races for this game, you play as a human BUT you get to choose their background.

For example: your character could be from Tevinter (an Altus if a mage, a respected soldier), a Rivani (a Seer if mage, or Sailor/Merchant), from Ferelden (a Circle Mage or mercenary) or Antivan (a pirate apostate or pirate captain). I would also like to add Avvar to this list, but I can't think of a reason why they would be in Tevinter...

Anyway, it's not that I don't want to be able to play different races, but the thought of being able to have multiple national backgrounds is appealing to me. I would love to play a Rivani Seer, or and Avvar shaman. Ah, well, a girl can dream.

That would be fine, except for the human part. If it was an elf, it'd be all good.

This would be my preference, but then again, I prefer human. I think there would be raging if they go back to human-only; there was when DAI was originally announced. Recall that we only got the extra races as a result of the additional year of development time.

Besides, I think there would be a missed opportunity to not have at least one other race: elves. Considering the whole Solas angle, and the large amount of elven slaves in Tevinter, I think it would be a mistake to not have them in the next game.

I've said so before in this thread, but I think it would be interesting if they were to focus on two races, with more resources for two instead of four, and make their origins vastly different. It has the potential to be a unique DA experience.

I, in turn, think that it would be interesting if they focused on elves exclusively for the protagonist here.

I'd be terribly upset if it were human-only. We already have one mandatory human protagonist in Hawke, and having yet another story from a human perspective when there's soooooooooo much potential for dwarf PCs in Tevinter... eugh, no, absolutely not. It's bad enough that DAI was constructed with a human PC in mind (a female human rogue is even Bioware's canon), so... another one? Why do we need another one? :///

But of course I understand that humans have their fans. I'm very interested in the Avvar (though I suspect we won't see many up north... maybe the goat-thrower!) and Tevinter's nobility, so it's not like I'm all boo, hiss towards humans all the time. :P

Regardless of the fact that I doubt Bioware will make an elven only PC, I don't think it'd be a good choice. You'd have limited backgrounds available, and while interesting, ,I think the human-elf contrapposition between the PC and Solas is something I want to see ad well, expecially in the case they'll follow the Maker-Fenharel theory.
Beside, if Bioware was really interested in a personal connection between Solas and the PC, they'd have left the inquisitor as the protagonist.

Having Solas as an antagonist is, in my opinion, already a terrible idea, and this "contrapposition" would make it even worse. I think the story only works if you can see some kind of benefit in it for you; otherwise, the conflict is as hollow, storywise, as fighting the archdemon from DAO. Also, the Inquisitor was a terrible protagonist and I never want to see them again.

That's not a realistic desire, though... It is highly unlikely that they will make an elf-only game.

[edit]

At least the method I suggested gives the player some choice. Limited choice is better than no choice. Also, focusing on two races allows them to have more involved origins, and more reactivity to those origins, than having it spread out over four, so elves would still have a significant part to play.

Although I do agree with Gomez that having dwarves in Tevinter would be pretty great, due to their unique status there.

The Elf inquisitor is almost equal to human in DA:I based on the thought put behind it.

Maybe the elf can be the "main" race as in getting the most out of the game if you play an elf, but I also doubt an elf only game.
