To be fair, if you've defined yourself as "pro-mage" it would be very odd to also be pro-qun. There's some cognitive dissonance there.

That's not true at all, though. We're not characters in Dragon Age. I can say, "I like Dalish culture and I like the Chantry as an institution and I like the concept of the Qun and I like Tevinter" and there's no inconsistency because they aren't real. There are people who treat them like they are, but at the end of the day they're all fictional factions, each with their own interesting lore attached, and liking one doesn't preclude liking another.

Maybe I'm just looking at it from a meta perspective, but there's no faction in this series I don't like. I think it's all interesting. That doesn't mean I support slavery or blood sacrifice or caste systems or religious law or racism or thought police or....... anything else IRL.

(Sorry, this wasn't really aimed at you. I just see this idea pop up on the forums all the time and I find it frustrating and bizarre.)

It's not that bizarre. It's just a rare case where my principles win out over entertainment.

If it can be called entertaining. At least the dwarves are funny, so it actually IS entertaining... as awful as they are.

*shrugs* I still don't get it. My principles only interfere with my entertainment if it's being produced via child labor or something.

The lulz are strong in you then.

You just have suffer at the hands of something for it to make a difference. edit: Err.. I guess that's what "triggering" is all about, I suppose.

I agree that it can be taken too far though.

It's not really lulz, though. It's just being fascinated by a lot of in-depth, carefully crafted lore. I like that Thedas feels fleshed-out and real and very flawed. I like things in fiction that resemble things I despise in reality. I love characters who I absolutely would not get along with in real life (Sera, Fenris, Calpernia...).

Err, I've suffered. And I've been triggered before - it's not fun. I just don't get what it has to do with principles. >___>

It's only flawed, in order to be fixed. I don't exactly believe in much of it, in it's own right.I just think they put a lot of stuff in to cause outrage, so you can eventually enact some form of justice later in some big epic choice (which will never be revisited). I don't think it's all there, just for world building reasons. It wouldn't be so awful, if that was the case.

Same went for things in Mass Effect. You're intended to swoop in and correct the past wrongs of the universe. Rachni, Krogan, Geth, and ultimately Reapers.

I was watching Game of Thrones, and something disturbing just occurred to me. We know that Targaryens are inbred, and that inbreeding has preserved their special 'dragon gene' which makes them different from other ethnic groups. We know that magic is genetic. Could some Tevinter mages possibly be inbred to preserve important genes? Unlikely I know, but it would be quite shocking. For a Medival fantasy setting, the topic really does come up a lot, which is odd if you consider the history of European monarchs and their notorious inbreeding. Heck Celene almost marries her cousin Gaspard, and no one seems to point out the whole relation issue.

It's certainly possible. Considering how the nobles all try to breed power through alliances in a limited pool, it wouldn't surprise me if a bunch of the noble families were related in some form.

As for the genes that could be passed through breeding, if not strong magical talent, perhaps if a given family has a particular disposition towards a certain kind of power, say spirit healing, for example, then perhaps they might breed in such a way as to highlight that given trait or predisposition.

The only other gene I could see that they would forcibly try to breed would be that of a somniari.

I know it's unlikely, randomly generated mages can be just as powerful if not more so than the one bred for it. I wonder if the thining Veil will result in new and more powerful mages in the future.

Probably. I would imagine that the Veil falling as Solas plans would cause the power levels of current mages to skyrocket. If it does indeed come down in its entirety, I would like to be as far away from Tevinter as possible, cause that'd be a powder keg waiting to explode.

Also, my bet is that a whole bunch of nonmages would receive the Gift as well, people with no discipline, no control. Imagine if the slaves managed to get their hands on that power? Minrathous would be going up in flames.

Even before Solas began his scheme, according to sources the population of mages seems to have been on the rise for a while, likely contributing to the issues with the Chantry. Too many mages and insufficient resources to deal with them all.

That's what nobility did back in the medical ages, to keep their bloodlines 'pure'. I don't know why that's a surprise to you that's how the medieval ages where insect was a common part of being nobility.

Unless the two family members are distant family members. Some cultures for example have it so while both partners are the same clan/family/tribe/etc they are usually distant cousins at closest, so close enough where the bloodline is still pure and far enough apart where you avoid the mutations that occur with close inbreeding.

Then there are other cultures that went the opposite direction, where full siblings would be married to each other. And yeah that tended to lead to the mutations associated with inbreeding.
