It means that instead of advancing blood magic, people each hide their own little secrets and progress in the sphere is very stale.

Considering any sane magister would do exactly that any way in order to preserve his secrets and edges I don't see how the ban makes much of a difference.

In either case, his secrets would only become 'public' knowledge once he was weak enough to be done away by his rivals.

There are some cool details in WoT about this. They have their embassies built completely underground (in the major cities)so they can still retain their caste. They have a highly favored status and can't be made slaves. Basically, they living good. Tevinter depends on them, so I imagine they have a lot of diplomatic power/sway, even though they can't participate directly in government.

Underground embassies?  Immunity to slavery?  That's really awesome...

Now wouldn't it be great to see this stuff up close rather than just read about it?  Every game not set in Tevinter is a wasted opportunity!

I honestly would have pushed to continue the war with the Imperium once the Qunari retreated.

It's a shame only blood mages saw the threat of the Qunari.

It's about the only thing I respect them for.

Yup retreat.

The entire war after the second exalted march was a slow Qunari retreat as they lost threater after threater until only a single fortress in Rivain was left to them.

It collapsed the economy of Thedas but the Qunari were dead to rights.

Hm... I don't know if it's wise to defy them considering the Exalted March.  That is always a threat, especially with the Qunari on the other side causing problems...  Now, if the Orlesian Chantry falls due a schism like Mother Petrice predicted, that might be a good time to start changing the laws in Tevinter... in fact, if that happens I guarantee that blood magic will be legalized within hours of the news reaching Minrathous.

Well its wrong to claim its no threat. But Orlais was created after Andraste's rebellion and since that day all exalted marches against Tevinter has failed.

And all attempts by Tevinter to gain territory since the days of Andraste have failed.

It it isn't like the Imperium is doing great against Thedas in wars either.

True, but Tevinter shouldn't risk more attacks from the White Chantry nations if they have a peace agreement... legalizing blood magic isn't worth it IMO.  They still practice behind closed doors without interference, so if a few magisters really wanted to get together and pool their knowledge, they could probably do that without letting the whole nation follow suit and risk reprisals.  If the Chantry winds up crumbling due to infighting, that's a different story.

Wouldn't help.  Dragons are weak.  They are killed all of the time...and by humans, dwarves, and elves no less.  What a joke....and to think Tevinter actually looks up to them......I wouldn't expect anything less.

Wasn't implying that, but Tevinter has not lost any of its original lands in wars with rest of Thedas and after Andraste's rebellion Tevinter has been the predator in all wars. Besides it was never Orlais vs Tevinter because that would be automatically won by Tevinter. Its always Tevinter vs rest of Thedas.

Pfft.

You can think that.

Gaspard doesn't fear them as a "predator" you figure the leader of Orlesian armies would know if Tevinter magically could match the strongest nation in White Thedas.

Archon Hessarian the Redeemed.

Dorian the Redeemer.

Dorian the next Hessarian?

Tevinter can be great once again, it just needs what Hessarian did before. Another Transfiguration. Maybe with fewer heads rolling. Perhaps even Dorian could lead it. The blood magic may be helping with the battles against the qunari, but it is blood magic that made the empire crumble to its current state and it recovered/stabilized without rampant blood magic. It really should be more limited if not removed.

Some magisters are evil, some magisters are really nice and cool. Tevinter has some big villains, but we are told that they do have their heroes, but we don't know much about them outside Tevinter.

There is corruption in the government and within the Chantry hierarchy. This is not unique to Tevinter, but there are those in Tevinter who fight this corruption, and even magisters who criticize/oppose blood magic (WoT, p. 109). There are also those who oppose slavery, although if they don't have strong allies they are assassinated.

It is pretty difficult to try new systems and change when everyone opposes you (except the dwarves). It's like Orzammar, stuck in a harsh system because they think it helps them survive and remain stable, and introducing any change causes great tension and possible violence.

Bring on the Second Transfiguration, Dorian for Archon!

Whatever he believes doesn't matter, Tevinter was not cornered in defensive battle, it was out for blood. Strongest nation of white Thedas is irrelevant when all of white Thedas is aiding it. If anything Free Marches (and Nevarra) and exalted marches get so much more credit than Orlais' army. You know as well as I do that Orlais's army without the mages of exalted marches backing them stand little to no chance against the nation with highest arcane knowledge.

Orlais couldn't even push back the invading Dalish without an Exalted March. Tevinter survived Exalted Marches, although it did need the help of an Exalted March to push the Qunari out... they did get overrun for a time as well.

Orlais is just too focused on pomp, not enough on reality. Perhaps Gaspard could fix that to an extent. I do think Gaspard would make Orlais stronger and Celene would be content with leaving it weak with the only thing to boast being a nice university.

They both have the chance to get better after Inquisition I'm guessing.
