Darinius I was the first Archon of the Ancient Imperium. Or maybe he was the first to use blood magic. I can't remember now.

The only thing Im not 100% sold on is slavery in the Imperium but not enough as to make a squabble about it.

i also dont own slaves... moral issues but i will buy those in slavery then release them* qunari bodyguards nod in agreement*

That and blood magic practiced by the higher ups are problems in Tevinter... although, not all here would agree...

I just don't see slavery changing at this time, if tensions ease with the south or the Qunari are defeated and Tevinter can expand north, Tevinter may be able to drop it as it could fall back on other things, like trade and colonies or whatever. Some in Tevinter have voiced their disapproval of slavery, and some have been killed because of that view, so it's not like its a completely embraced form of life for everyone in power.

@ Mrs. Stick

We also don't know the ins and outs of slavery in Tevinter. It could very well be that the slavery that goes on there isn't chattel slavery. As in slaves are treated like people rather than property. Many also speculate that slaves in Tevinter live a more comfortable reality than a commoner would in the rest of Thedas, Ferelden being the slight exception to the rule. Slaves that prove themselves join the Liberati and Laetan classes of society enjoying minor rights as Tevinter citizens. Some Laetans have even gone on to become Archon making Tevinter a true land of opportunity. On the flip side, we do know that behind closed doors slaves are utilized in blood magic rituals and injuries range from benign to deadly. That really depends on the wisdom and discretion of the mage performing the ritual.

Basically, it's a wait and see situation at this point. It's too easy to point and say 'those guys over there are evil slave owners'. I'm hoping for more nuance and complexity myself.

Slavery no matter how comfortable it may be is still slavery. However like I said before this is not a big problem for me. I am still very much looking forward to learning more about the Imperium.

The only way for me to learn of the glory of the Tevinter Imperium is to learn by asking a few simple questions along with reading your history. It might take me a little while to truly understand but I am open to all the teachings I can receive.

Slavery is currently practiced by the Tevinter Imperium. It is one of the few places where elves are still literal slaves, as opposed to alienage elves who are not technically slaves, but are still in the bottom of the society and it is common practice for alienage elves to sell themselves or each other into slavery to provide for their families.

Because of this, the condition of alienage elves in the Imperium is slightly better, but for the slaves it is significantly worse,

*****************************************************************

Can you explain this part of the wiki to me????? as I am understanding it that the slaves of Tevinter are not treated all that well. As this seems to be a very important part to the economy in the Imperium I can understand not wanting to do away with it.

its like this:

Say a family is poor so X member sells themself into slavery either perm of x years. This helps the finatcial issue for desitute family(explaing why the alienages are better maintainedand cared for).

Now lets look at it first from a economics view, slavery is a market of pure supply and demand. With the supply low and demand high(a slave goes for at least a hundred soveriegns depending of the "pedigree") in tevinter this is ingrained into the culture that the nation would theorectically fall if slave rebellions were successful.

Now we get to rights and duties: slaves in tevinter are treated as property, expensive property(think a high end pc) how they are treated DEPENDS on the one who holds their contract. Some are bled dry for x experiments or violated due their "habits", others are treated like servants rather than slaves(those its rarly mentioned and examples often go bad)

Questions apprentice :)

Now some person or thing signing up for slavery is not true slavery in my eyes. They knew what they were doing when they did it. Now slave hunters taking elves or humans whatever it maybe from other countries then yes that is true slave trading at its best. I do understand that depending on the slave owner will determine how they are treated. So why does it make it seem that all slaves are treated with such disdain?

edit: am I reading a history written by the south?

edit #2 o wait yes I am....written by a Chantry scholar..... must be south.

I wonder if we are ever going to run back into some "living statues" like we did in the Mage Origin, and in DA:A. I forget who the woman...statue was in the Mage Origin, it has been too long...XD

@Mrs_Stick:  What if it were slavery by coercion?

Your family doesn't get killed if you choose to serve the Magister?

It IS a choice - regardless of how it is perceived.

It's a choice that reminds me just how badly the Imperium needs to come crumbling down.

ah thats a gold question*gives gold star*

They possibly treated with such disdain due to the owners seeing them as lesser beings(common belief of slavers and slave owners) and so treat them as x. The soithern nations records on tevinter are often biased and paint tevinter as a place that sacrifices virgins and kittins due to cultrual differences. Remember my apprentice "everything is permitted yet nothing is true" in the world"

Ah okay, thanks you guys for clearing that bit up! I knew she was important, I mean she was a talking statue! I just...couldn't remember the details.

Just like the Chantry needs to come crumbling down...wait it already is/has...too soon? Lol, I'm just kidding but there is going to be a lot of drama in the coming years in the great world of Thedas.
