Minrathous, Domus Caracalla - the night before

Elowyn was remembering her first night at the Circle Tower. Everything had seemed so big and strange. Her life thus far had been spent among her family and all her cousins in the alienage. She’d rarely encountered a shemlen, and no other mages at all. Now she was sitting on a bed in a dormitory full of shem mages, all of them older than herself. A girl approached her.

 

“I like your ears! We had an elven servant at home with ears like that.”

 

“Oh,” said Elowyn, “We didn’t have any servants.”

 

“That’s too bad. Well, we have the Tranquil here. They do everything servants do.”

 

“The Tranquil?”

 

The girl looked serious. “Mages who couldn’t handle the Harrowing. You know what that is, right?”

 

“No. It doesn’t sound very nice.”

 

“It’s like a test. You do the Harrowing, and you become an Enchanter. It’s like graduating school.”

 

Elowyn had never been to school. She’d been taught to write by her uncle.

 

“You won’t have to do that for ages yet!” added the girl.

 

“What’s your name? I’m Elowyn.”

 

“Lady Amandine. Pleased to meet you! It’s time for dinner. You can come sit with us.”

 

Elowyn smiled, remembering how Amandine had taken her under her wing and treated her almost like a little pet. It would have been annoying, but Amandine was so sweet and good-natured that Elowyn forgave her. Amandine been transferred to the Circle at Montfort to be closer to her family and wound up at court after her Harrowing.  Elowyn was glad that Amandine had left the Tower before everything fell apart.

 

Amandine had warned her about Knight Captain Hervé, but her powerful family connections meant that she’d never experienced his punishments the way Elowyn did.

 

If only she had a friend here in Tevinter! Her accommodations were luxurious, but she had no one to confide in. She hadn’t seen Caradoc since the day she’d signed the contract. Aurelie had shown Elowyn the library, given her a list of texts, and turned her loose to do research. Though her mind was absorbed in so much new and tantalizing information, there was no one to share her excitement.

 

She missed Guy more than ever. Every time she thought of him, she tried to push the memories deep down inside herself. Sometimes she dreamed he still lived, and woke up anticipating telling him the news, only to suddenly remember that she could never see or talk to him again. She asked Aurelie to convey her apologies to Guy’s family and explain why she’d left so suddenly. “I don’t know if they can forgive me,” she added. She didn’t tell Aurelie what Guy had said about his stepmother’s plans.

 

“At least something good has come out of it – you’ve joined our family!” observed Aurelie.

 

“About that,” said Elowyn, “How exactly is my research going to help you in the Magisterium? I feel that I need a course in Tevinter politics. Would it be possible for me to accompany you to the chambers to observe what happens?”

 

“The chambers? A lot of hot air and posturing. That would teach you nothing! The real work goes on outside the chambers.”

 

“I’ve always heard that the Magisters use magic to crush their opponents, but I don’t understand how they get away with that. Isn’t it rather obvious to use fire or lightning against your enemies?”

 

“There you have the difference between Tevinter and everywhere else: In Tevinter, we learn how to wield subtle magic. Anyone can throw a bolt of lightning. What they teach you in the Circles of Orlais lacks finesse. It may be fine against the occasional Darkspawn, but it’s no use in peacetime. That’s precisely why the position of mages in Orlais, Ferelden and the Free Marches is so precarious. You are a blunt weapon, and no one wants to live side by side with a trap that could go off at any moment.”

 

Elowyn looked down at her hands. She’d trained her whole life to wield powerful destructive magic. Yet she’d been unable to do something as simple as freeing herself from the Circle Tower. She wondered what sorts of tricks Aurelie would have employed.

 

“I want to learn what you do,” she told Aurelie.

 

“The best way for you to learn is to be a part of our operations. Your research is essential, but I can also have Caradoc include you in certain… maneuvers. In the meantime, I’ll need you to continue looking into the lyrium trade. I have contacts among the dwarves who owe me favors, and I’ll have someone take you to the Great Library at the Minrathous Circle. Tonight, however, I want you to accompany me to a party at the Rabirian manor. There you will meet the key players.”

 

“Do Magisters bring their elven servants to these functions?”

 

“Believe me, by the time the night is out, no one will be asking you to freshen their drink!” Aurelie laughed merrily, and sent Elowyn off to dress for the party.

Elowyn was surprised to find an elf waiting in her rooms. A rather dapper male elf, beautifully dressed, every crease perfectly pressed, every curl in place. “Umm, hello?” she asked tentatively.

 

“I’m Avilius, your tiring man,” the elf beamed.

 

“’Tiring?’ Err, what does that mean exactly?”

 

“As in ‘attire.’ I’ll be helping you dress.”

 

“I-“

 

“Just stand there a moment.” Avilius stepped back a pace, put his chin in his hand, and looked her up and down. “You’re quite petite!” he declared. “Velvet or damask? I think perhaps the Rialto silk edged in Ansburg lace.” He picked up an elaborate garment and held it up to her. “Yes, perfect! Alright, let’s get you out of this pathetic little sack.”

 

As he reached for her laces, Elowyn backed away. “What? No! I can dress myself!”

 

Avilius pursed his lips and tutted. “I think not. The Magistra would have my head on a platter if I let you out the door looking less than magnificent. You are a Caracalla now, and must look the part.”

 

“But you’re a man! Not only have I never had someone dress me besides my mother, it’s just, well, it’s embarrassing! I’m not taking my clothes off in front of you.”

 

“Believe me, I have no interest in your feminine impedimenta. I would not have achieved my present position had I allowed myself to be distracted by the flesh of my patrons. The point is to embellish, to disguise, and to enhance. The costume is of vital importance to the play!”

 

Elowyn rolled her eyes. “Well, okay then, but you’d better not have cold hands.”

 

Avilius grinned with glee and rubbed his hands together. “This is going to be fun!” he declared. “You won’t recognize yourself when I’m done with you.”

 

He proceeded to strip off her paltry garments and encase her in swathes of rich black fabric. “This is your battle armor,” he stated as he prodded and strapped and tucked. “Don’t be fooled into thinking a party is a fun social gathering: it’s a battle, plain and simple. Wars are won and lost around the banquet table.”

 

Avilius placed shiny, sharply-pointed heeled shoes on her feet and stepped back to admire his work. He rushed forward and adjusted her neckline, stepped back again, and smiled in satisfaction. “Oustanding!” he pronounced, then clapped his hands. Another elf entered the room carrying a bag and a little step stool.

 

“This is Sephina,” Avilius told her, “She’ll be doing your hair.” Sephina smiled shyly at Elowyn, then placed the step stool next to her, opened her bag to reveal an arsenal of brushes, combs, feathers and jeweled hairpieces, hopped onto the step stool and began to loosen Elowyn's braids. Avilius remained to oversee the operation.

 

“Just look at me,” he commanded, “Chin up! There.” Elowyn tried to hold still while Sephina combed and twisted her hair into an elaborate construction. Sephina then applied a layer of paint to Elowyn’s face and dusted some glittery substance over her bosom and shoulders.

 

“Now,” said Avilius, “You may inspect our work.” He led her over to an enormous mirror. It was true: Elowyn didn’t recognize herself. The heeled shoes brought her up to human height, and her hair towered even higher. Her waist had been corseted into a tiny funnel that belled out into a elaborate skirt, poofed and ruched and even trailing a train. It was extremely impractical. Elowyn tried to take a breath. “Small breaths,” Avilius commanded.

 

“Now I understand why courtiers have such an odd way of talking,” Elowyn said, “It’s because they can’t breathe!”

 

“Best to keep quiet,” Avilius warned. “The less you reveal about yourself, the more you will learn about others.”

 

“Thank you for helping me,” Elowyn told him. “I had no idea how complicated it was getting dressed for a party.”

 

Avilius made a florid bow, smiled, and exited the room. Sephina was packing away her hairbrushes.

 

“Thank you, Sephina, my hair looks beautiful!”

 

Sephina smiled and bobbed a curtsey. “It’s good to see one of our own in such a position, ser.”

 

“It’s uncommon then?” asked Elowyn.

 

“To be an apprentice, yes, ser, very uncommon! It’s a tremendous honor. All of us are very proud of you, ser, and we’re rooting for you. It gives us hope, you see.”

 

Elowyn felt overcome by such praise. “I want to use my position to help you and the other elves,” she confided.

 

“Oh, you do! Just by being who you are,” said Sephina.

 

“No, I mean, I want the elves to be free,” Elowyn clarified.

 

Sephina blanched. “Please, ser, don’t speak of abolition. The freed people don’t have it so well. We servants of House Caracalla are loyal. We want to do our best for our House, and that means that our lives are good as well. Some of these houses, the ones that aren’t powerful, well, their slaves don’t have it so good as us. And the freed have it even worse – they’re nobody without a House name behind them.”

 

“You don’t want to be free?” asked Elowyn incredulously.

 

“No, ser! Where would I go if I were free? I’d have no job, no property.”

 

“But you would be your own master! You could go anywhere – all the money you earned would be your own.”

 

“I’d have no one protecting me. Do you know how many runaways end up as blood sacrifices?”

 

“They do? That’s horrible! How can that happen?”

 

“Ser, the Magisterial Houses and the Chantry and the Circles – they rule and they have all the power. If a person isn’t part of those, well, they have nothing, and nobody is going to help them.”

 

“Couldn’t they band together, form their own organization?” Elowyn suggested.

 

“The Magisters aren’t going to let that happen, ser. Maybe once in a while, they might let a group form, but only so that it causes trouble for another family. That’s the way things work here.”

 

“What about going to Orlais or Ferelden?” Elowyn asked.

 

“And live in an alienage?”

 

“I see your point,” conceded Elowyn sadly. “I hope that one day, we’ll have our own place to live and be our own masters.”

 

“We had that,” said Sephina, “Look how well that turned out for us.”

Epilogue

ugin was still alive he began to to crawl toward monkai slowly rising to him ,while zara helped him to his feet and carried him to the infirmery. "The fun couldn't be over yet..it's just starting. " he thought. As he stood up blood from his wound bleeding profusely he saw his would victims helping each other to receive medical attention. It sickened him to see them ignoring him... "NO! THERE ARE NO HAPPY ENDINGS FOR ANYBODY!" Ugin shouted. Sigils began forming on his body "WE ARE ALL GOING TOGETHER! " the sigil we're ready and as he clapped his hands togethor he felt cramped. A ball of red light roared as it erupted... but their was no shock wave... just pulpy mass of bone and sinew.

" Disgusting..." monkai said hand outstretched. He had created a barrier of sorts around him. He removed himself from zara and stumbled to the remains of his foe.. It figured that his head would remain giving one last smile as some sick joke. He took the head as proof of kill for caius.

Caius granted them audience a week after the battle. He sat in his throne tapping his finger on the the armrest as monkai led the briefing on ugin, the sokai tribe and their abilities. "So you endanger my children but you get results.... I will decide your fate with this house later for now a reward. Caius rose from his seat summoning his staff and stepped down from his throne. He approached the one eyed and armed darkon "while we haven't spoke in sometime I appreciate your aide in this matter, I present you this signifying your alliance to my house." Darkon nodded in approval. He moved to his daughters he said nothing just holding the tree of them tightly almost choking them. "Papa.. can't breath... "miriel said in a whisper. "I am most proud of you miri you may not have the gift but from what monkai said you fought as a vallious " caius said holding back his tears.

Finally he made his way to monkai. It was a cold silence.. caius struck in his face busting his lip. "You still stand with us?" Caius asked. Monkai looked at him and said "yes"

The training grounds were personally being overseen by the first enchanter for repairs. It looked bad but give it a few days it will be good as new he thought. Zara walked by him "so ready to go home love?" . "Yeah just have to finish a class and some paper work" monkai replied. "Shame I'll be getting a head start " she said walking away.

He outstretched his hand toward the sun it was a new day and a new adventure was on the horizon

Aurelie and Elowyn boarded one of the flying gondolas. They were accompanied by two enormous Qunari bodyguards. Elowyn supposed they were Tal-Vashoth, not actual Qunari. She wanted to ask them how they had come to be working for House Caracalla, but they took up positions at each end of the gondola and remained silent for the whole journey. Aurelie pointed out various landmarks on the way.

 

“There’s the dome of the Great Library, and there’s the dwarven embassy. You’ll be visiting those in the coming week. And there’s the senate chambers, the one with the columns to your left, and the fountains of Tlaxius to your right.”

 

“There’s so much history here, everywhere you look!” exclaimed Elowyn.

 

“It’s important to us to preserve our heritage,” said Aurelie. “The glory of the Imperium rests on the work of the great Magisters. Without their pursuit of knowledge and patronage of great works, we’d be just another barbarian backwater like Ferelden.”

 

“They have nice dogs in Ferelden,” observed Elowyn.

 

“Not when you’re facing them across a battlefield,” sniffed Aurelie, “Foul, stinking beasts. Now, you see that structure there, the one with the arches? It’s the waterworks – sanitation, that is, something decidedly lacking in Ferelden and Orlais!”

 

“I can heartily agree to the greatness of plumbing!” exclaimed Elowyn.

 

“You see,” said Aurelie, “Everything really is better in Tevinter.”

They arrived at the Rabirius family manor, another grand building, though not as grand as House Caracalla, Elowyn was pleased to note. She realized that she had started to identify with her new masters.

 

A herald announced them, “Her ladyship, Magistra Aurelia Caracalla and her apprentice, Ser Elowyn Adaran de Montpellier.”

“I’ve acquired an appellation!” whispered Elowyn.

 

“Imperial magic,“ replied Aurelie, “It elevates everything.”

 

“Literally!” laughed Elowyn, stepping into the floating palace.

 

As she and Aurelie proceeded toward the hostess, Elowyn heard whispers on either side, “Elf! Apprentice, can you believe it? Whatever will she come up with next? You have to admit, that woman has style. Look at her dress – like putting a nug in a ballgown. But look at it! That’s Ansburg lace – it costs a fortune! She almost looks human, doesn’t she?” The whispers followed her the whole way up the gallery. If she hadn’t had so many layers of cloth holding her up, Elowyn felt she would have wilted from all the acidic comments.

 

At the end of the room stood a buxom woman and a slim, distinguished gentleman wearing a monocle.

 

“Affectation,” whispered Aurelie. “It’s a magical apparatus that allows him to keep one eye on his trade accounts and activity on the senate floor while gladhanding at his wife’s party. Just watch – you’ll see his eyes cross.”

 

The lady kissed Aurelie on both cheeks and turned to Elowyn.

 

“May I present my apprentice, Elowyn,” said Aurelie. “Elowyn, this is Lady Proseria Rabiria and her husband, Ser Didymus Rabirius.”

“Pleased to meet you,” said Elowyn. The man took her hand and kissed it. Elowyn felt herself blushing, then stifled a giggle as she noticed his eyes crossing.

“We’ve heard so much about you,” said Lady Proseria. “I’m very jealous of my friend for finding such a pretty elf!”

“Talented, too,” added Aurelie.

“Yes, I hear you have a new project up your sleeve,” said Proseria to Aurelie, tapping her on the arm with a fan.

 

“Always,” replied Aurelie, “Those who don’t innovate fall behind.”

 

“I wanted to ask you about this Venatori group,” said Proseria. Elowyn caught Ser Didymus gazing at her bosom with one eye and winked at him. He blinked and brought his eyes back together and coughed.

 

“Let me catch you after everyone has arrived,” replied Aurelie to Proseria. “Hector has some information I think you will find most enlightening.”

 

Aurelie drew Elowyn away from the hosts and toward a group of young people. “Mages from the circle,” she informed Elowyn under her breath. “Find out what they’re studying.”

 

“You’re going to leave me alone?” asked Elowyn.

 

“I have work to do,” replied Aurelie. “You’re a big girl – entertain them with stories about Orlais, but not a word about our research. I’m sure I don’t have to remind you.”

 

“Of course! I’ll keep my pointy ears open.”

 

Aurelie introduced her and departed.

 

“You’re her new apprentice?” A woman with white-blond hair gushed. “You know that everyone wanted that job. You’ve made a lot of enemies already!”

 

“Not intentionally,” said Elowyn.

 

“There must have been a reason she chose you,” added another woman, looking her up and down. “I heard you were from Orlais.”

 

“Yes,” replied Elowyn, “from Montpellier. I was in the Circle there.”

 

The mages’ eyes grew big, “You’re from an Orlesian Circle?” they gasped. “We’ve heard about those!”

 

“Horrendous stories!” exclaimed another person. “How did you survive?!”

 

Before Elowyn could reply, a young man interjected, “I heard that they lock the mages up in cages every night!”

 

“And that most of the circles have fallen to demons! I can’t believe they don’t teach the mages how to resist possession.”

 

“Have you heard about the Tranquil?” everyone fell silent. “Tell us about the Tranquil!” they begged her.

 

“They say it’s for their own protection,” said Elowyn, feeling like she shouldn’t have to explain or defend the Orlesian Chantry’s edicts about magic. “But it also takes away their personalities, their free will.”

 

“Maker’s breath!” exclaimed the young man. “It’s like a nightmare!”

 

“What are the Templars like?” asked the blonde woman. “You know what they say here about Templars, don’t you? Mothers tell their children, ‘If you don’t behave, the Templars will get you!’”

 

“Well, they sometimes say that in Orlais, too,” said Elowyn. “Parents really don’t want their children to be mages, so any use of magic is discouraged.”

 

“It’s just incredible,” said the other young woman.

 

“Such a waste!” exclaimed the young man. “You are lucky to have escaped.”

 

“I do feel lucky,” Elowyn admitted. “I can’t wait to visit your Circle and see the Great Library!”

 

“You’re going to love it!”

 

“I can show you around, if you like,” offered the young man.

 

“Me, too,” said a Rivaini woman, “I can show you the laboratories.”

 

“Laboratories, plural?” asked Elowyn. “We had kind of a closet they called a laboratory. The Montpellier tower was very small.”

 

“Prepare to be amazed!” said the Rivaini. “So, what’s your area of research?”

 

“I was wondering the same thing!” exclaimed Elowyn. “I think you study very different kinds of magic in Tevinter. I want to hear all about it!”

 

The blonde woman went first, “I study Creation, specifically glyphs. I’ve been working on how to make them last longer, cast more at a time, placement, and so on.”

 

“I can see that would be very useful, even in peacetime,” observed Elowyn.

 

“Indeed! I’ve been working with herders in the High Reaches to protect their flocks from wolves. Stupid rams keep setting off the glyphs though. Friendly fire.” They all agreed that friendly fire was a problem.

 

“How about you?” Elowyn asked the Rivaini woman.

 

“Magical devices. I do a lot of collaborative projects with dwarves. I heard that your Tranquil are good at arcana.”

 

“They have some facility with it, that’s true. It must be interesting to work with dwarves and experts of other races though. The dwarves in Orlais keep to themselves.”

 

“They’re all over the place here! They have their own underground halls, of course, and sometimes you have to go visit them there because they don’t come out. But many of them are surface dwarves involved in commerce.”

 

“It seems like the races work more closely together here in Tevinter,” said Elowyn. “Are there any other elf mages here?”

 

They all stared at her and giggled. “Did I put my foot in it?” asked Elowyn.

 

“No, no,” said the blonde. “It’s just that the librarian is an elf! He’s a funny little guy.”

 

“An elf can be a Magister?” asked Elowyn incredulously.

 

“A Magister? Oh, no, all the Magisters are humans. Some come from the Circles, it’s true, but the First Enchanters remain with the Circles, and the librarian is under the First Enchanter. I can’t imagine our librarian involving himself in politics, even if he were human!” They all laughed. Elowyn felt very interested in meeting this librarian.

 

“You know, I don’t think I caught your names,” said Elowyn.

 

“I’m Aminia,” said the Rivaini, “and this is Evantia and Dio.”

 

“Pleased to meet you! What do you study, Dio?” The male mage was rather handsome, Elowyn though. He had an open, gentle countenance, not at all what Elowyn had pictured when she’d imagined Tevinter mages.

 

“Spirit magic,” he said.

 

“He plays with wisps,” smirked Evantia. Dio just smiled and opened his hands. Then he drew a shape around Elowyn’s head, and a cloud of glowing, sparkling wisps appeared.

 

“They’re so beautiful!” she exclaimed. “I didn’t know you could do this with wisps!”

 

“They’re very curious little fellows,” said Dio. “They think your hair arrangement is spectacular!”

 

“It is spectacular! I had to tear myself away from admiring it in the mirror so I wouldn’t be late for the party,” said Elowyn.

 

At that moment, Aurelie appeared. She smiled at the three young mages, who all bowed and curtsied and expressed their admiration for her. “I’m afraid I need to steal Elowyn away from you,” she said, fluttering her hand at the wisps, who turned blue, twisted together and disappeared up the sleeve of Aurelie’s dress.

 

“See you at the Circle!” Elowyn called as Aurelie guided her away.

 

“I’m glad to see you made some friends,” said Aurelie. “Now, tell me what they’re up to.”

 

“One is studying glyphs – we learned about those in Orlais, though they weren’t my focus. The Rivaini could be a bit dangerous – she’s studying magical devices and has a project going with the dwarves.”

 

“Don’t worry about her,” said Aurelie, “She’s one of ours.”

 

“She’s a Caracalla?” asked Elowyn.

 

“No, she’s in House Varazes, but they weren’t treating her very well, so it took little convincing to win her loyalty. She tosses them a few bones from her research now and then, but the real breakthroughs go straight to us. I’ll have her introduce you to the dwarves.”

 

“The third one just studies spirit magic. He seems pretty harmless,” said Elowyn.

 

“That’s the one you need to watch out for!” said Aurelie. “He’s a honey trap. Not to mention, spirit research is cutting edge at the moment. I want you to concentrate on him, see what he can teach you. But be careful.”

 

“A honey trap?” Elowyn asked.

 

“It’s an Antivan invention,” replied Aurelie. “Of course! What better way to infiltrate an organization than to prey on its loneliest members? No violence necessary; just a little pillow talk. So be aware and don’t let him seduce you.”

 

“I see,” said Elowyn, thinking about the young man’s pleasant manner.

 

“You’ve spent your life locked up in a tower, right? So you don’t have much experience with seduction. We’ll have to fix that.”

 

“Fix it?”

 

“Yes, we can’t have you succumbing to every handsome face.”

 

“What if I pretend to fall in love with him and steal his secrets?” asked Elowyn.

 

Aurelie gave her a penetrating look. “I’m more interested in his research than in what his minor house is up to. I already have a spy in their kitchens.”

 

“Another can’t hurt,” suggested Elowyn.

 

“Your enthusiasm for this plan worries me,” said Aurelie wryly.

 

“I’m just kidding! I’m not a complete fool, even if I didn’t have much exposure to the world outside the Circle. Exposure to the world inside was enough to teach me not to trust anyone.”

 

Aurelie turned to her and rubbed her arm. “I’m sorry to hear it, even if it’s to our benefit.” She gave Elowyn a little squeeze. “Remind me to have you do a little roleplay with Caradoc before you visit your new friends.” Aurelie winked at her, and Elowyn hoped she didn’t blush.

 

They bid farewell to their hosts, then collected their wraps and boarded the gondola. At the last moment, a shadowy figure detached itself from some shrubbery at the corner of the building and slipped into their gondola. Elowyn stifled a gasp as she recognized Caradoc.

 

“Success?” Aurelie asked him.

 

“Success,” he replied, depositing a scroll in Aurelie’s hand. She tucked it into her bodice.

 

“Excellent work!” she praised.

 

“Anything for you, my lady,” he replied gallantly. He caught Elowyn’s eye and winked. She was going to have to get used to all this winking. It was like a game of Wicked Grace, discerning the meaning behind all these secretive looks and trying to determine who was bluffing. She wondered if Aurelie’s apparent affection for her was sincere. She couldn’t even trust Caradoc – how had he slipped into the party unseen? There was so much she didn’t know. She’d thought her life would be all about learning magic, perhaps going to war if there should be another Blight. The collapse of the Orlesian Circles had upended the table, tossing all the cards into the air. They were falling in new patterns, and she had to read them quickly so she could pick the best hand.

A loud bang came from the door at valleonius manor. Monkai and zara we're interrupted in their forbidden tryst since his standing with the house was still uncertain "who in andraste's bussom is that I was almost there " monkai complained. The elf dug into his satchel taking a letter and book "package for a ragin monkai from a sokai ugin" monkai snatched items from the elf giving him five sovereigns before slamming the door. The savage just won't die will he... Monkai read the letter attached to the book.

It was a sunny day ugin sat at a cafe drinking water and eating some type of chowder that had been sitting there for a few hours... he was bored out his mind. "Maker there's no work.. you'd think the temps in the south would be hiring consultants to deal the rebels " . As sat in his chair stirring a gelled chowder... he looked up and saw a rivaini man with a brunette woman at his side waiting to be seated... he was beautiful to look at... ugin leered at the man dressed in casual clothes showing off his tattoos and piercings but showing his badge as first enchanter of minrathous ... it was then he saw it.. " a ragin? Huh a odd clan I thought the circle bred them out..." .ugin was amazed by how another dead clan survived the "passing" as he looked even harder he could read their conversation he was leaving to be the first enchanter at the neromenian circle and would do a stint as well in marothious. The woman was not pleased. He thought it a shame that his next target would be leaving... but he would prepare and stalk his prey.

She heard grunting and sounds that sounded as if slapping liquid. The woman was bound and gagged. As her vision began to focus she saw a man covered in piercings thrusting himself into a object. The man then noticed his captive waking, "ah your awake hopefully your more fun than your friend here" he said removing his member from the head of the previous captive.

The woman muffled speech was amusing to him. "Hush judge Carissa this how this going to work; you do this one favour no questions asked and I won't turn your head into a portable seed bag" the pierced man said laughing at the his meaning of his remark "

The judge nodded as he explained how wanted the man known as "first enchanter ragin monkai" for the rite of passing a old rivaini tribal ritual to denote war between clans that followed the older ways. The judge's gag was removed and she was untied and sent on her task, the man began to toss the severed head of the guard catching it and pressing his thumb in the eye "soon and glorious battle will begin the plan set, the bombs are ready and his suprise is sleeping" his thumb penetrated the eye blood exploding into his hand

*Publius stood before a large mirror contemplating his outfit, still not the combination he was looking for. This coming ball in the Rabirius manor was for apprentices and Publius wanted to look his best. His semi-long brown hair was combed all the way back and tiny goatee groomed precisely. Just like master, he thought pleased. He had chased the butler away from his chamber, the old man had the audacity to tell him how to dress! The gall! All he needed to know what his master was wearing, that was it.

 

Defeated the butler had left to see Gnaeus Angelus, a altus mage, the second apprentice chosen to represent house Vaellanius. Publius didn´t think of much of that young mage. Sure, he was a strong healer but that´s about it. The only reason he was chosen to join was because Magister Caius had taken him with in Deep Road expedition a while back. A weak personality, always whining about the treatment of his father in Magisterium. A tall bean pole looking boy who´s blond hairline was already receding. His presence in house Vaellanius was strictly political. One of the deals Magister Caius had made.

 

Suddenly he heard someone plucking a lute in the corridor, outside his chamber. A out of tune lute it seemed, from the horrible sounds coming closer. Publius sighted.

Vel stepped inside Publius´ chamber with a broad smile plucking his lute. The young man gave him a perfect court bow, "master Vel, at your service!".

"You know, there are bards in the ball. Real bards", Publius said with a dry voice watching Vel plug his lute leaning on the doorway. A elven slave girl walked by with a pile of linen. Vel flashed his charming smile winking at the girl. She glanzed at him speeding up her pace her cheeks blushing. While she turned at the corner she gave Vel a quick look before disappearing in the hallway. Vel sighted softly.

 

"One day you will get yourself killed over a pretty face" Publius shook his head. "A life well lived then" Vel sighted again looking after the elven girl. 

 

"Hmph" Publius snorted, "you should think of your future instead of chasing after every skirt". Vel took a few dance steps into the chamber plucking his lute, "I know I will end up face down in some alley someday with a knife on my back anyway, so why spend time worrying about the future?". 

He twirled gracefully sitting down in a chair raising his legs on Publius table. "I heard that the new elven lass will be at the party, I have composed a song for her to sweep her off her feet". 

"She will just run back to Orlais once she hears you play" Publis shook his head, "you have many talents my friend but playing lute is not one of them".

 

"Everyone is a critic" Vel shrugged plugging his lute. His eyes lighted up suddenly, "do you think she has that cute orlesian accent? I can´t wait to hear her speak".

 

Gnaeus stuck his head in from the door, "time to go Publius". Vel sprang up from the chair, "let´s go then!". "You are not invited" Publius grunted at him, "this is mage only party. We will represent house Vaellanius". 

"Merely a technicality" Vel smiled complacent. "You want to tell that to master?" Publius turned to him raising his eyebrows.

 

"Fine" Vel snorted. "But I will escort you guys there".

 

By the Rabirius family manor Vel stood between the wings of a roaring dragon statue looking at the yard over the wall. Publius and Gnaeus had entered the party leaving him outside. A gondola arrived in the yard, Magistra Aurelie came out with a petite elven girl at her heels. "Ooh!" Vel gasped mumbling to himself, "it is her, she is beautiful! I have to have that!".

 

A spear head poked him at the side, "get down from there" a rugged voice commanded. Vel gazed down, patrol of city guards stood there eying him up in the statue. "Do I need to ask you again?", the Optio leading the patrol grunted. "All right, all right, no need to get all huffed up" Vel said climbing down.*

Oh oh! She went to the party and didn't even see her secret admirer!   She'll be sorry to have missed a dance with such a handsome rogue. A musician, too *sigh*
