I only find the default name useful to get in the minds of the writers, as far as how they perceive regional/ethnic peculiarities. For example, the default Ferelden warden was "Aedan", which is a common gaelic/scots name meaning "little fire". Garrett and Marian coincide with Ferelden ancestry too. I might not use these names for my own characters, but it gives me a template to start from. I find it lame to name a Ferelden or something with a name with Greek origins (for example, Alexander). I'd rather reserve Greco-Roman to Tevinter names.
If the human Inquisitor was actually named "Maxwell", I'm not sure what to think though. It has some Ferelden similarities (all the scottish names with "Mac" in them are related to "Max". OTOH, Max is also common in Germanic languages).
Of course, I'm probably reading way too much into it.
It's just a subject that interests me.
