Look, one of my characters is going to Beatrice Millicent Edith Madopulops, so long as I can do that - I will be happy.

And of course the obligatory Fiddles. Actually if I can't make the human female look like my current ava (sans horns) I will be bitterly disappointed.

If the male human's default name is Maxwell I wonder if House Trevelyan were descendants of coffee farmers. Considering their ties to the Chantry, I guess someone's got to be famous for providing the Divine and Revered Mothers caffeine for the big Summit. :?

How dare you besmirch the good name of House Trevelyan!

Don't you mean "Maxwell House?"

(Sorry...sorry, I just had to).

Why on earth would default names even begin to matter...

Why not? It's as much a part of a lore as anything else. I understand that not all of the people - I even can say most of them - will use it, but it doesn't change anything.

I personally had no problem with default names in dao and da2, they were nice. So I just used them, why not. I understand that some may not like "garret" or "daylen" or whatever, but the names some people give their Hawkes and Wardens are usually much more odd for my taste. They don't fit. But I don't really care about that, since it's not my game, they can name them whatever they want, of course. And  some people just want to leave them default. So they want to know.

I only find the default name useful to get in the minds of the writers, as far as how they perceive regional/ethnic peculiarities. For example, the default Ferelden warden was "Aedan", which is a common gaelic/scots name meaning "little fire". Garrett and Marian coincide with Ferelden ancestry too. I might not use these names for my own characters, but it gives me a template to start from. I find it lame to name a Ferelden or something with a name with Greek origins (for example, Alexander). I'd rather reserve Greco-Roman to Tevinter names.

If the human Inquisitor was actually named "Maxwell", I'm not sure what to think though. It has some Ferelden similarities (all the scottish names with "Mac" in them are related to "Max". OTOH, Max is also common in Germanic languages).

Of course, I'm probably reading way too much into it. :D It's just a subject that interests me.

Male
Qunari – Kaaras
Human - Maxwell

Female
Qunari – Herah

I have no idea if they've announced the others yet.
^_^

Kaaras....I like that name. Kaaras Adaar. I won't use it but if I make a Qunari I'll try to come up with a similar name but I really like Kaaras Adaar.

@StreetMagic - remember, the Trevelyans are not from Ferelden but the Free Marches.  Not sure how that fits with your plans, just sayin...

Yeah, I know. Which makes me curious what their heritage is. The Free Marches are kind of a hodgepodge of Tevinter and regional influences. Trevelyan is a Cornish name though, which would correspond with Ferelden (United Kingdom). They could be descendants of some of Maferath's old barbarian armies, back in Andraste's exalted march. But that's just my groundless speculation for now.

Given the cosmopolitan nature of the Free Marches, I don't think you can go wrong when it comes to thematically appropriate surnames.

I, for example, plan on naming my human Inquisitor Luther.  A good, martial name right there.

Maybe it'll be open ended. I kind of hope so, since then I wouldn't think too much about it. It's just if I find something culturally specific, I'll end up confining myself to that (not sure why.. I guess I'm a little picky).

Nothing wrong with that.  I just think of something that sounds cool, and flows well with the surname.  I don't really put much thought into it beyond that.

I'm planning to name my Necromancer Qunari Inquisitor "Kata" Adaar, since that seems fairly appropriate for their specialisation.
