First, some background.

A couple months ago, a theory about the Inquisitor's identity began appearing on the forums. It was supported by the following bits of evidence:

* Cassandra mentions that the Inquisitor is the only one to survive the blast. Some people have taken this as evidence the PC is evil and caused the blast, but the Inquisitor seems genuinely confused.

* As far as we know, there is one way to survive death - spirit possession.

* As far as we know, only Fade entities can close tears in the Veil (Justice does it in Awakening by altering the party's weapons). When a tear opens, people just have to abandon the place.

* Spirits have vivid memories from their hosts. Spirits also can become disoriented on leaving the Fade, forgetting their identity. Indeed, as in Anders' case (and Kristoff, to a lesser extent), their personality starts to merge with the host's.

* From the Enemies of Thedas trailer: "You are a mistake! You should never have existed!" Not "your power". You.

* On the Inquisitor's team, there's not only a Fade expert, but also 1-2 people who have died (Cole and, possibly, Leliana). There are also 2 companions (Iron Bull and Sera) who were described as strongly distrusting/fearing demons.

* The Inquisitor's backstory is non-playable. More on this later.

So the theory goes as follows: the Inquisitor did not actually attend the peace conference. They remember attending it because the body they're possessing attended it.

However, the theory would fall apart (or become extremely unlikely) if the Inquisitor was playable while at the conference. Since it hinges on the idea that post-blast Inquisitor is a different entity than pre-blast "Inquisitor's host", we'd be controlling somebody that the Inquisitor remembers being, not the actual Inquisitor.

....

Enter the character creation stream. They skate by the intro without much comment, but the peace conference is notably absent. We see the blast killing a bunch of mages and templars, then we see the Inquisitor standing up in the Fade. According to the theory, this is exactly the moment when the Inquisitor begins.

Coincidence? Impossibility? Utter insanity? Probably. However, as Knoppers points out, there's even a bit more evidence in favor - the Inquisitor has the hand gash prior to character creation... before they touch the Tall Hat Spirit. So that eliminates the possibility that the power is just a gift from THS.

Let's discuss!

Its very possible that this demo was created with the intro removed.

It wouldn't be the first time that things in a demo are different from the real game.

Yep, that's a possibility too. I don't think we'll have a long sequence before getting to the CC, because people didn't like playing default Hawke for the intro of DA2.

But there's a chance there will be a playable flashback to the peace conference after we encounter Tall Hat Spirit. There's also a chance that the CC actually occurs before the explosion (less likely, because that would mean someone did a bunch of work to move the CC to the Fade).

I keep hearing about the blast, but I haven't seen the video.  Can someone link me to the video of it?

A spirit confused with its identity is already covered by Cole. I doubt that the Inquisitor is also a spirit.

It's actually 'You are a mistake'. I have a feeling that this quote is completely out of context and that it's the Inquisitor himself who is the one saying it.

Thank you!

I really hope that the inquisitor isn't bound to a spirit/is a spirit.  We have Cole!  I think that's enough, but it's an interesting theory nonetheless.

The voice doesn't match though...

It does actually. It's what the VA is trying to convey (pain, exhaustion?) that doesn't make it instantly recognizable. Listen to it again.

I thought the same thing.

It doesn't sound like the elder one at all.

The Inquisitor is an anomaly in the Elder One's plan. He didn't expect anyone to survive the peace talks, and the fact the Inquisitor inherited powers that counteract his plan only infuriates him more. Your death is a big priority in his books I imagine. The fact we begin in the Fade and upon character creation we see the mysterious entity of light, shows that there is perhaps more going on than we know. Demons and spirits are like mortals in many ways. They have personalities, desires, goals and rivalries. The 'Light Woman' could be his major foe in the Fade, the entity who delayed his plans, but know she must interfere directly, via proxy (you) to stop him.

Actually, the 'You are a mistake' guy kind of sounded like Alexius to me. Dorian's mentor dude from the demo.

Aah, I see what you mean. Maybe it's that doppelganger talking?

Edit: it doesn't sound quite like it either.

Could be this too... But I'm still leaning towards the Inquisitor.

Didn't they confirm it was Alexius who had this line?

No, they didn't confirm it.

I'll grant that the two do sound similar. And some of Alexius' dialogue in the Redcliffe demo seems to be connected to the "You are a mistake", line.

I always just figured it was one of those lines from a game, that sounds really cool, which is then added to a trailer, out of context, to intensify the trailer.

Didn't they say there would be an intro before the story began? I think we'll get to see the Breach's blast more than just when we start a new game. That's too hella inFAMOUS for my liking.

Well, to compound the "you are a mistake" line, Alexius says in the Redcliffe demo, "And here you are. Finally. I knew you would appear again, not that it would be now, but I knew I hadn't destroyed you. My final failure." I had initially thought he had been speaking to Dorian, but perhaps he really was speaking to the Inquisitor.

From that Redcliffe line, you could deduce that Alexius might have been the one to cause the explosion, inadvertantly causing you to be marked. "You are a mistake."

He sounds like Alexius to me too. The way he says "have existed" sounds like the "is impossible" in "Victory is impossible! The Elder One will destroy us both!" - they both have a similar quaver to them.

WRT already having a spirit in the party, I think it could go either way. You could argue "there's already one, no need for another" or you could argue "there needs to be foreshadowing for the Inquisitor's identity (especially for series newcomers), and one way of doing that is to talk to someone in a similar situation."

Anyone else think that the "you are a mistake" line sounded a lot like Corypheus? Maybe not, but I could see it fitting for him if he is working with/for the Elder One...Or is the Elder One. Which I doubt.

I'm listening to it now, and Cory's voice doesn't really match up well.

Hmm, perhaps not. It's been a while since I played Legacy.
