I'm playing DAI on PC and while I'm sure I wil prefer mouse and keyboard for the tactical camera in single player, I don't think the fast paced nature of the multiplayer will be a good match for my usual approach to the solo campaign.

With that in mind, I'm interested in buying a gamepad to play MP with but I wanted to see if anyone had good or bad experiences to share with PS3 or XBOX 360 controllers on PC?

I use my Xbox360 controller for a lot of games on my PC... I absolutely love it.

I have a wireless one, for that you’ll need a wireless receiver (the play-and-charge kit USB only charges the battery), but I believe there are wired options. Also, the driver is official from Microsoft, minimal fuss in setting the thing up.

I know a friend who used to use a PS3 controller on his PC, but the driver was 3rd party and a pain in the arse. He recently upgraded to the 360 option.

edit: I'm pretty sure I'll be going gamepad on this one. Thumbstick for walking is ace; I'm not really a fan of exploreing with directional buttons.

I use a wired Xbox 360 controller for some platform, combat, or "hack'n'slashy" 3rd person games (Castelvania LoS, KoA) on PC. Instant recognition and pilot installation so the experience has been good so far.

You can't go wrong with the Xbox 360 controller. It's cheap, and other than the PS4 controller, it's probably my favourite controller out there.

It's also supported by just about every game these days. it's a good purchase.

If you already own a PS3/PS4 controller you're comfortable with, then you could use this: http://controllermax.com

As for your skills with keyboard & mouse for frantic MP, I'd say you can't be as bad as I was before playing Mass Effect 3 MP. Still, it didn't stop me from playing the hardest difficulty and usually be the top player in 9 out of 10 matches. Bioware MP are more about understanding how combat works than quick reflexes.

Thank you for the insight, everyone! Maybe I will give the keyboard and mouse a go and see just how badly I am at the get-go, heh! If I don't improve, it sounds like 360 would be a solid option but it's great to know PS3 is totally viable too!

Is this a serious thread? Keyboard + mouse is miles better than any controller for "the fast paced nature of the multiplayer".

It is a serious thread. The only online multiplayer I've played are shooters where I have felt a mouse was useful but where I had to use very little ability/spell strategy. TF2 is basically it for me so far. So my thought was that a gamepad might be easier for this style of teamwork/strategy since I never have to memorize where anyone's abilities are in SP; I just always pause to point-and-click them. As I see it, targeting speed is the sole the benefit of a mouse here and I was curious about the experiences of others.

Let's put it this way: Before ME3MP I had never played a shooter in my life. I paused the game every time to give commands in all the games I played (ME1, ME2, DA:O, DA2, Baldur's Gate 1 & 2, etc). So basically, I'm very under skilled with a mouse...

Still, I went on the ME3MP and reached #7 in Canada for challenge points. It wasn't that hard, you just need to understand how the combat works, how the AI behave and what makes your character strong. Then it's just a matter of positioning yourself on the map at the right place at the right moment. With that, I've only seen 2 players that could rival me with the Fury (extremely fast gameplay) and one of them was Link otherwise known as "the Fury guy".

Believe me, if I can do it with such low keyboard/mouse skills, about anybody can with a little practice...

I believe the only thing you can do with a controller that you can't do with keyboard + mouse is have different walking speeds.    While with a controller you lose the fine motor control of mouse precision aiming, and having to switch between abilities and potions rather than just having them available at an instance.

Personally, the loss of control you get with a 'controller' is far too great a price just to be able to walk slower.    How many times do you really need to walk at variable speeds?
