...is an attempt to recreate the Ancient Tevinter ritual?

I know, I know, the Ancient Magisters used blood magic to physically enter the fade, but as we also know, a place where many deaths occurred have essentially the same effect, weakening the Veil. In this case, due to the blast, it was weakened to an extent that the Veil actually ripped and Demons physically entered our realm.

Also, during the Character Creation Demo on Twitch it looked like the Inquisitor was physically present in the Fade, the same

feat the Magisters tried to achieve.

Thoughts?

I doubt that's the case.

Trying to do so at Haven while a peace conference was taking place with Templars, Mages most of whom would disapprove, and Chantry mercs would be really stupid.

Also during the CC section of the twitch feed they said that the color that they put as a background represented what was more or less an average lighting and coloring conditions that you would see your character in during the course of the game, so you don't start playing and a few hours in just look at your character and think that s/he look like complete ass in different lighting and color conditions. We have know for quiet some time that the Inquisitor would be physically in the fade because we have had a trailer with Cassandra talking about how we emerged from the fade.

I like this conjecture, OP.  Physically going to the Fade is the kicker for me. Def. makes sense if Corypheus is the Elder One too, which I believe he is.

He's probably just the main boss of the Grey Warden part of the storyline.

It was Sandal, actually. He ate too many refried beans.

I think it was more of an attempt by The Elder One and his followers to keep the fighting going. Everyone who wanted peace dies in the explosion leaving only those who didn't attend the warmongers and the like. The Anti-Mage groups can EASILY blame the tear on the mages only fueling the fire. The War continues, more people die thus contentiously weakening the veil and weakening the nations of Thedas so they cannot put up much resistance against The Elder One.

I do know this problem gets solved by the Inquisitor pretty quickly with Mage vs Templar thing.

We will find out who or what caused the explosion soon.  :D   Yay!!!   Less than 2 months now!

Corypheus was only recently released from his prison though

More than one antagonist to deal with.  :)

What if instead of trying to get to the Black City, the main antagonist is FROM the Black City?

Some of us did speculate that the Black City could have been some kind of prison

Essentially, was the explosion a means to an end or simply an unfortunate side affect?     Just making an explosion in an area with thousands of innocents and the presence of a huge amount of lyrium (remember Oghran's comments in DAO) would be sufficient to rip open the Veil.    This is effectively what the Magisters did do in the past, so in effect it was recreating their ritual.

So the intent could just have been to destroy the peace conference and the side effect was the Veil tear but I must admit that now seems unlikely, with the voice over of the Elder One.   His followers would have known the deaths and the lyrium would be sufficient to achieve their purpose, if this was opening the tear, but the choice of location was deliberate to maximise the demoralising and chaotic effects of their action.     Of course the people who planted the bomb (or whatever did cause the explosion) may not have been aware of who they were working for.    Many of the events currently occurring Thedas are apparently being orchestrated by the Elder One and his followers without them necessarily being aware of that fact.    The general theme seems to be to maximise chaos and so this would seem to be what is required to aid the return of the Elder One.     Bloodshed and strong negative emotions have always been associated with a weakening of the Veil.    People tend to react badly to situations outside of their control (chaos), so the greater the chaos, the more negative their reaction is going to be.

Whether or not the Black City is involved with the story, I'm hazarding a guess the Elder One will be some form of Chaos Demon who can only truly exist in the Fade and will return when the breach is complete and the material world and the Fade merge into one.

If that's the case, then what happened to the previous tear and was it fixed?

I imagine whoever tainted the magisters thought the darkspawn thing was enough and closed the door. Demons for another time.
