I've noticed that my Twitter feed has been swamped with Dragon Age Inquisition characters the past few months. In some cases complete with names, full drawings/renderings of them.

I have to admit it's been annoying me since half the fun I have in an RPG is the mystery, and part of that is not knowing who will be my companions for the game.

I went and watched both the launch and cinematic trailers for Mass Effect 2 and saw that they did similar things. The launch trailer more so. They introduced some of the characters and showed them in action, I guess for the entire Mass Effect series I'm lucky that I didn't see any trailers before I had played through it.

Is it just me that doesn't like character spoilers in trailers? Or do you feel they are a necessary part, and how far should they go?

If Bioware follow a similar approach for the new ME, I think I'm going to hide under a rock until release  :D

I don't recall ME trailers spoiling any character for me. They give general overview of the character's personality at best but it's a whole different matter to experience it in the game. Mordin, Thane and Jack are quite good examples.

I came across ME by chance and started with ME2, so one of the best parts was discovering all these awesome aliens you know nothing about and hearing their stories. I don't mind a few flashes of something here and there to make me curious. A good example is Thane and Miranda on the ME2 cover, which immediately caught my interest. I mostly agree with OP though, I avoided the DA forums for this exact reason and when ME:N hits i'll probably do the same as well.

It's because people talked up the "character focused" nature of Bioware's games to no end, that the smartypants in the marketing department thought that promoting games via their characters would be the best idea ever.

I hate it and I hate the focus on characters if because of it the other major elements, like the plot, take the shaft, which has been the case for Dragon Age 2, Mass Effect 2 and by extension Mass Effect 3.

I don't mind it, but I rather they don't make the characters look like food to be eaten.

I'm fine with it, in itself, but I think Bioware keeps going too far with it. I also think there should always be 1-2+ party members to be kept a total mystery (barring any leaks).

Usually I don't mind, especially for new characters. The only time, I did mind was when I watched something about ME2 before release and they showed Shepard's first meeting with Garrus on Omega. I would really have liked to see that with "my" Shepard in game for the first time. Not sure if that was an official trailer or a leak though. If it was the latter, I freely admit that it was my own dam fault.

I carefully avoided the trailers for ME2 and 3. Before 3 went on forum and metacritic hiatus as well. That was the experience I wanted. To go in blind and every time reunited with a character or old npc was a pleasant surprise.

Exactly, seems the same in TV shows, like a get out of jail free card to say it's all about the characters anyway, when the overall plot goes downhill.

I'd like to have my cake and eat it too, great character focus and overarching plot.

Huh, don't remember... It wasn't on Bioware's official youtube Channel...

OT: No, don't mind... It doesn't spoil the fun because it's how you meet them and how you react with them that makes the difference.

Yep, sometimes that's what you have to do.

With the Walking Dead back on tv, it kind of reminds me of that.  After each show I immediately turn off the tv before the "On the next episode of The Walking Dead...."  Same goes for previews throughout the next week.  I know they have to drum up some interest, but damn if it doesn't just spoil some things for me.

I race to turn off/switch the screen at that point. Like outright jump out of my chair.
