Personally, I hope characters can die regardless of your choices, not depending on them. Make companion deaths random and beyond the player's control.

That is a most terrible idea.

Pretty much you can write any character to be important to the plot in fact companions are important too but are writen so they could be killed leliana is writers pet because of many things not only because of that not to mention that leliana fits only to pt of some players for others she was nothing more than enforced same with cullen and pretty much same was with anders in da 2.

I think this whole "writer's pet" thing is a bit unfair. We're the audience, we don't get to decide who the writers enjoy/want to make their favourites, if that is really even the case. Leliana was quite popular I hear, I for one quite enjoyed her story, so why shouldn't Bioware make her a recurring character? And even though I didn't like him much, I enjoyed Anders' story in DA2 as well.

It's the same thing with Liara in ME, she is a popular character therefore people cry foul that because they can't kill her off she is therefore the writers special lil snowflake. Nobody is worth a salt unless I can kill them, BSN logic.

Much like 'Mary Sue' the term is now used synonymously with 'character I don't like.'

Why? Putting things like that utterly beyond the player's control adds to the realism and immersion of the game. Making it random makes the impact of the death far greater. It could be anyone, even your lover. Think of how great an emotional impact that would make. Think of how believable and immersive that would make the world: anyone can die. No choices, no saving the one you like, anyone. And on top of that, each playthrough would like be different. I don't see any way in which it would be bad.

Yes, it does seem to be that way. Wanting to kill your companions sounds dumb. These are stories you get to be in, ya don't own'em. Wanting to kill a popular character and then getting angsty at the devs when they don't let you kill that specific one which you have deemed their favourite... because you can't kill them?

Yeah, I'm chalking this up to personal issues.

It sounds like an intriguing concept on paper, but trust me, in an actual game it would be horrendous. One of the core pillars of a Bioware game is an endearing cast of followers. These are games where you’re supposed to get attached to the characters. If you do have to make a choice to sacrifice someone, it hits you hard.

Randomly killing characters would completely devalue any narrative deaths, and Bioware are all about the story. The knowledge of it happening would be stressful and as the player you wouldn’t be attached to anyone. It would be like playing a psychological thriller. It is a huge feature, one which the given game would need to be designed around. Incorporating it into something like Dragon Age would ruin the experience.

But being unable to chose which characters die will hit far harder than being able to. At least if you have a choice, you can spare the one you like. But make that death random with no player inteaction makes into far more brutal event emotionally, particularly if was a character you really cared about.

I'm not suggesting just having characters popping their clogs all over the place, but when the narrative calls for a death, the person that dies should be random.

The only companion I constantly wish death upon is Cullen. I have no special reason . Just found him annoying in the first two games and want him gone.

The additional squadmate we took with us in Lair of the Shadow Broker also looked pretty dead when they were hit by the desk. Don't jump to conclusions until we experience the events of the game for ourselves.

It is leliana as far have most apparences in series pretty much she had companion role in dao , own dlc , 3 apparences in da 2 , was in 2 books and now is major character again in dai , then they brought her back to live for players that killed her also we can't touch her in dai (most likely) she is followed pretty much by alistair. They pretty much force her onto players and throw her in most da products...

Not like the first time this happened. They did this with Liara all the time with the ME stuff. Just learn to accept it and move on. That is what I did. Not gonna let a small thing ruin my time with the game.

Well it is not small thing when they force characters on players in rpg when those are characters they rly shouldn't force on players as i said pretty much anders whole story was just ridiculous and stupid if you played as pro-templar hawke same for tallis.

Companions should be in some kind of jeopardy, its more dramatic that way.

I'm pretty sure of that too.  I also seem to remember that he also stated to not read too much into that clip as that scene would unfold in the game and make more sense than what was briefly shown in the video.

If a companion could die randomly at a certain point of the story, what's to keep the player from reloading a previous save if the the desired companion is not killed? That would lessen the emotional impact of the event.

Again, I do think it is an intriguing idea… I just don’t ever see it working in Dragon Age. Making choices in a Bioware game is part of the gameplay; player agency and intentionality mustn’t be undermined by the game mechanics.

Seems like it’s a problem you invented. "Forced" and "throw" are not fair words, you're using them to illustrate your distaste, which is fine, I guess, but I don't care for the tone. You sound rather entitled and ungrateful.

In the case of Dragon Age, apparently Leliana is a principle character for the series. Anything beyond that observation can only be a preference: do you or do you not like the character? And the answer is yours, and has nothing to do with anything.
Stories have main characters; this is a thing that is done. In "The Dragon Age" Leliana is a "main character."

If our companions can die and if you lose one during the game, will you reload a save? And if their death is the result on long-term choices, would you restart the game to avoid losing them?

Depending on the companion, I would.

I will reload soooo fast. I'm not losing anyone! Definitely not on my first playthrough.

What do we know about Bioware games? That is certain paths or choices are made companions can die. It happened in SWKOTOR, ME and the other DA games

You try to escape from core of discussion with pretty words yes she is forced on players because simple i can't do anything about her and she keep showing in games that i dislike it or not doesn't change fact she is forced onto me wheter i love her character or hate.As i said i don't appreciate forced characters but of course i know limitations so of course i know that some characters need to be forced but that absolutely shouldn't be characters that can clash with your views like anders and by that make story stupid and ridiculous.

As i said you try escape with pretty words calling her flower of dragon age or sunshine of dragon age what makes her writers pet... no she isn't main character of dragon age or at least shouldn't be they already said that dragon age is about world not single characters...   sadly they fail as far.

Dude, punctuation; also, comprehension. But never mind, it’s quite clear you’ve got your mind all made up. You’ve once already misconstrued what I said to validate your invented problem. If that’s a sign of what’s to come, and I think it is, I choose to discontinue my participation in this debate. Let’s go our separate ways.

And it’s so much sunnier on my side.

Well to be fair Crimson Liara was a writers pet I mean damn she got her own Comic,Dlc & she was made overly important in ME3 Story no one else got that kind of treatment.

Which is why I hated ME3 so much my favorite female characters were not given the same appreciation seriously I would have tossed Liara sreaming out of the Airlock for proper treatment for Ashley,Miranda,Jack & Kelly.

Tali was my LI everytime after seeing the favortism Liara got and how Ashley was essentially Zaeed with breasts now I had no other option.

I think Mass Effect 2 handled it reasonably well- your choices affect if your companions die or not but you do not have direct control over it.
