Fry I love your Profile pic thats one adorable dog now back on topic I think companion deaths should  choice based say I do choice A,B & D during a quest if my own stupidity costs me a companion then its my fault and I will continue on unless its Varric then its reload time for me. ;)

If choices do lead to companion death, the choices that do so should be at least 20+ hours of gameplay before the death, and not clear cut what they affect, so no reloading. You live with the consequences :P

This thread again????

Look, I really doubt she's dead. Bioware likes to be all dramatic when it comes to death. Especially when it comes to companions.

Also it's very likely you're in the fade when that happens, just look at the sky when they go to the courtyard.

no need to be all high and mighty, of course the sky looks like that, you're in REDCLIFFE, a place where there is a VEIL TEAR in the sky. So yea, the sky's fuked up, you're not in the fade doe

@BobZilla84 - Generally speaking, I agree with you. If I'm slogging along and I make a choice that gets someone killed, I keep the choice. That's how I wound up with Jack dead in one playthrough of ME and Alistair taking the US instead of my Warden in my first DAO playthrough. I didn't know how to avoid it yet because it was my first run. I later runs, I do manage my choices to get the outcomes I want. Then, I still don't tend to kill off companions I'm not fond of just because I don't like them.

I guess I'm just not cut-throat enough to make those choices for no other reason than to get rid of companions. :)

I can sort of see the argument behind Liara being a "writer's pet".

Now, I don't have anything against Liara specifically. She's not among my favorite characters in the series, but I still like her just fine.

But the way she was used/written certainly can come across that way. She was stretched into situations that didn't necessarily fit which is also why some people complain that her personality changed; it didn't necessarily change, it was just that she got kinda pidgeonholed sometimes and I can certainly see how it came across as favoritism. Whether it was favoritism and not just sloppy writing or bad characterization, I can't say.

I do not see how it applies to Lelianna, however. I think a great deal of it stems from their retconning of Lelianna potentially dying in Origins. While I can see why the retcon can distress people (one of my own major problems with DA2 was the amount of retconning they did), I think labeling her a "writer's pet" is a misplaced notion. Just because the character has been used more often than other characters doesn't inherently make it favoritism. I think Lelianna has been utilized pretty well in the DA verse. Though I admit that this opinion is perhaps slightly ignorant, as I have not read all of the books.

I reloaded for Tali. AND the Quarian race.

I thought I could force them into peace. Gerrel was too bloodthirsty. Never made that mistake again, bye bye Geth.

So far, I think I'd reload for Sera.

You do realize that you can save both, right?

Nope, you can't if you didn't import ME2's data that meet all the requirements.

I agree with this. Admittedly I havent read Last Flight yet but she's hardly a prominent feature in Asunder or the Masked Empire and I dont think her appearances were unnecessary.

I really, really, really hope that Cassandra, Cullen, & Iron Bull can all die-- I don't want any of them in my party at all.

I generally dont kill of characters well except the ones like Loghain and Anders for story reasons but I did lose a few on my first suicide mission in ME2 "Jack,Mordin&Zaeed" which sucked all kinds of A** and I learned what I did wrong and didnt do that again.

I don't remember them ever saying your party members can die. I do remember one of them saying you could end the game with only 2 or something.

The only character that i ever wanted to kill in the DA universe instead of just sending them away was (and still is) isabela. Ugh. Just... ugh! If she shows up in inquisition and tries to initiate sex with me or my LI (wouldnt be surprised).... i swear to the maker.... i better be able to at least punch her lol. Orrr i could feed her to a dragon!!!! Oh, the possibilities!

It's a Bioware game, companions can and will die.

In DAO I'm pretty sure there is a possibility for every character to die except for Oghren and Morrigan. DA2 had a lot of potential deaths as well.

There were only really two times Liara ever explicitly bothered me as a writer's pet - The time in ME1 when I went in to talk to her the first time and our conversation consisted of the intimate knowledge of asari mating practices. It was sort of icky, especially since ME1 Liara came across as a tween with a crush on Shepard. And in ME3 when Liara was locked into the Thessia mission. "It's my home, I have to go Shepard!" I kept wanting the option to say, "No you don't. You aren't a professional soldier, little miss archeologist, and you are most definitely emotionally compromised" So instead, I take either James or Javik along to troll her. Javik's best at it.

Lelianna I never wound up killing off because I never did anything that would have forced me into that position. Specifically, I never profaned the ashes. So, for me, her progression as a character never wound up feeling problematic because I'd seen her head go flying off. But, I know how it must feel for those who did wind up killing her because I remember how angry I got when I loaded up to play Awakening with my City Elf warden who had romanced Zevran, and the game didn't acknowledge it at all and then proceeded to force Oghren (my least favorite companion) on me all over again. I quit and never finished it.

Nope Oghren can die and Morrigan can we extremely wounded. Of course canonically Oghren, Leliana and Morrigan are guaranteed to survive in DA:O. Though my PCs that hate Oghren usually end up just telling him to "sod off" in DA:A so he's pretty involved.

If our companions can die and if you lose one during the game, will you reload a save? And if their death is the result on long-term choices, would you restart the game to avoid losing them?

Depending on the companion, I would.

I have chronic reset-itis. If I don't like something I automatically reload my game.

Lol but yeah it would depend on the companion, I don't like 2 of em, so far, but who knows.

Ugh I hate those so much and not because I want to save everyone, I don't, it's just that's it's so contrived and gamey. Like seriously Virmire was so annoying because I keep on being amazed at how foolish the one who is setting up the bomb is, like we can hold them off long enough to both rescue the team leader and still protect the bomb, especially if we send the non-following companions to sure up the strike team/ bomb.

Don't be surprised if there is a potential decision leads to companion death. When I bought DA2 brand new and played it through the first time I was quite stunned by the Deep Roads thing with Bethany (I reloaded from my back in Kirkwall save). It may well be lurking in a choice waiting to bite us unexpectedly again.

BTW guys, lots of ME2 stuff in this thread, maybe too much do you think?

Oooh, I'm sorry if I'm not a fan of something that was shooting at me for the past three years. Sort of.

Also, on my first playthrough, I couldn't. Went for peace ever since. FUBAR'd 'em up with Destroy anyway. Sorry EDI.

But the inability to save the Geth from their idiocy means they die. Horribly.

You know what I miss?

Putting it in a spoiler in case people didn't play these games (DA2, NWN2, ME2) ...

Spoiler

So I am really curious and excited to see and know certain actions MEAN something.

It's a reality of war that you can't save anyone, whether or not Virmire was executed well.
