I must be doing it wrong as it has a lot of praise here, but I can't do well with the Asari Valkyrie? She is very squishy, even with 6 in TA.
The AF is very low range - it seems like I can do a lot more damage with the Fury Adept than I can with AV?

Fury is a lot squisher but spam throw faster with a teleport dodge.
The Fury is traditionally seen as the better mook killer, while the Valkyrie is the better boss killer.
I never really felt like 6 ranks of Tech Armour was worth it on the Valkyrie, I use 46664 instead usually with the Raider. If you take both debuffs from Warp and Annihilation Field and use a powerful weapon then the amount of boss damage the kit can do is terrific. I use Warp ammo but if you decide on Incendiary ammo then the damage is just ridiculous.
How many points do you have in Fitness? What armor module are you using?
AF is the same power on both characters.
Cato, so are you rushing in and zapping them with AF to prime them, or using it defensively?

I use an Adrenaline mod, rush in to fire a couple of shots, hide the reload and detonate a biotic explosion by casting Warp, then fire again if needed.

And Paladin with Paladin ? Nope, the Valkyrie is a shotgun lady for me (Wraith, but there are other good choices).

I found her very difficult to play at first, but after a few games with her I developed more feel for the rhythm. She's more rhythm dependent than most adepts and you need to slide in, do something during the short priming phase, then warp-boom and slide out of range and shoot for the warp cooldown.
Also, detonate your AF every now and then on a mook and refresh it, otherwise it will turn off just as you slide up to a Brute.

I've tried it. I prefer her with the hurricane, but it's not bad.
And Paladin with Paladin ?
Call me crazy but I don't like the Paladin pistol. So THAT, I've never tried.
I like the Piranha on the Valkyrie. It's great against multiple mooks, because you can switch from one to the next without reloading, and the combination of the Piranha and biotic explosions makes her almost as effective as the Fury against mooks. You can double-tap 3 different mooks with one Piranha clip, and that in combination with a BE usually means 3 dead mooks. The Piranha clip size synergizes pretty well with Warp's cooldown too. And for bosses, if they are within a debuff AF and have been hit with the Warp debuff on top of that, the Piranha's DPS chews through them very quickly with Warp/AP/Incendiary ammo.
Long range is the only concern here. I usually carry a lightweight SMG or Pistol with ULM as a sidearm, just in case. The Hornet, the CSMG (if you have it at high level), the Eagle, and the Acolyte are my favorites. Acolyte gives the added bonus of helping you take down shields on Atlases and Primes, which are the only two real "problem" enemies for this setup.

I like the Paladin mainly on adepts with Stasis, to make its accuracy shines with headshots. But in most situations, an other pistol (Talon, Arc) or an other kind of weapon is a better choice.

This totally kicks ass ... really important to note (and almost everyone knows this, but bears repeating) 6B in AF is essential
Get up close and wreck everything!
What about 36656 Max ?
You loose : 5% DR
You gain : 15% in power damage + 5% in weapon damage or 5% in power damage + 12,5% in weapon damage
(I didn't consider the headshot evo for a Hurricane without stabilizer build)
About the cooldowns, I think that the weight capacity bonus from the passives compensates for the lost of 6a of Tech Armor.
I'm no good with her, another class that has abilities that clash with each other. The need for speed and a nice cool down number and tech armour has the cool down penalty. Good Valk player destroy wreck things however. Been in a few games where the person really knew how to play and it was very impressive.
@Loufi - I like biotic explosions, and lots of them
With the Hurricane only as a loadout, passives are not needed to accomplish this, and with warp ammo stacking with AF and warp on targets, stuff still drops extremely fast. Mooks die instantly
Also, I have found the 6A evo of TA to allow much faster cooldowns on warp than the level 4 passives. With my build, only weapon damage would help in passives, but to accomplish that, I would be giving up BE's, which are very heavy damage dealers (as i'm sure you know).
I have also found, with that build, my recharge time on warp coincides almost perfectly with the re-priming of AF for the next biotic explosion, so great for staggering and damaging bosses (as this build is most effective at very close range)
As this build focuses on BE's, power damage is largely underwhelming (I would argue almost worthless).
If you haven't tried that build, you should give it a whirl, as the playstyle is quite exiting and fast paced.

You mean the time it takes for you to get out of range and in again?

I've heard this before and it is a myth, you can still stay in range and your AF will re-prime after a certain window

Without any gear those two aren't hugely different.
The main difference comes in tankiness with higher level Cyclonics in which case the extra 15% DR should be relatively noticeable.
Valkyrie is an interesting case with regard to build. Unlike the Turian she has middling racial passive and fitness. In fact the Turian w/ 0 in fitness has more shields than the Asari with 4 or 5 invested. Unlike the Turian she also doesn't have any power that derives much benefit from power damage bonuses.
Anyway that is part of why I split those two on her for 66644. If you never take a CM then it probably makes sense to run Max's 0 passive build on the whole.
Try a venom with incendiary. Kinda cheesy but works like a dream with her
Reegar/Incendiary on the Valkrie is cheesier - in fact it's cheesier than a cheesy wotsit topped with cheese strings dunked in cheese dip!
Warp + Incendiary cheese ... applied with Reegar cheese ... cheese3
