Is there a good tutorial on how to use walkmesh so that players can consistently walk on things like docks? I do not seem to be able to get this to work consistently. Sometimes it seems to work and other times, ugh... want to scream!

I did search quite a bit, and have tried many things but some of the instructions are sort of vague or generic and hard to tell what I'm doing wrong or right. I'm hoping if I ask, someone can point me to the best instructions!

Thank you for any help.

Tutorial? I'm not sure but if you ask a more specific question here you will get support I'm sure.

Post some screenshots of what you are trying to do. Andysks and ColorsFade have had threads on this recently so they may be able to help.

There used to be one, but I can't find it now.

It sounds like you'll want to use a combination of a walkmesh helper with walkmesh cutter. If it is a combination of dock pieces, for example, I'd change them to environmental objects then grab a walkmesh helper and scale it to cover the lot. The entry area for the walkmesh should be at or near ground level for it to bake properly. When baked, the helper will produce a walkable surface. But you'll not want the characters walking in the gaps, so for those you lay down some walkmesh cutter triggers. After baking, those areas should become unwalkable.

Does this make sense?

walkmeshes are stereotypically painstaking - but once you have fiddled around a bit, you come to find that sometimes it can be just a tiny fraction off to make them bake wrong. so, level ground or surface, judicious use of walkmesh helpers (there is a pack on neverwinter vault with a variety of shapes and inclines), and patients all add to having that unique walk area you're building.

you may have seen the Caves Tileset - one corner variation has a natural pit in it - well i filled the pit with water and used walkmesh helpers to make it so sahaguins that spawned in it appear to walk up out of it - so once you get your footing with walkmeshes (pun!) the sky's the limit - or at least level 2 of your dungeon :P

also, horizontal the helpers can overlap - which makes it a bit easier...

A dock or a bridge should be able to walk on if placed nicely on the terrain. But in general what others said. I also had big problems with that at some point, but once you play with the walkmesh helpers and cutters you'll find it very easy after all.

Thanks for all the answers, I appreciate it!

Regarding the walkmesh helper, is the way to size it by adjusting Scale? or is there an easier way?

I'm using Walkmesh Helper Flat.

For the cutter, I'm guessing because you can only make a walkmesh in a rectangle, the cutter is to cut out parts that are unwalkable?

You can adjust scale by holding down your control key and rolling your mouse wheel.  There's no need to increase the Z height for the walkmesh helper, though, and it may be better if you don't.

Yes, it's to cut out the unwalkable areas.

Make sure that if you have any placeables on the walkmesh helper, they should be converted to environmental objects, or if you prefer you can leave them as placeables and select the "walkable" box in the placeable's properties, which will allow you to walk through them.

There are other shapes available here.

A big thank you to you all. I was able to make a bridge over a creek, and docks with multiple pieces where PC can walk over them all seamlessly.
