Which was your favorite origin story, and why? You can pick multiple origins, along with adding your own point of view to it.

Examples: A human noble who is trying to find his/her place in the world after losing his/her family.

A antivillain caste less dwarf force to do crime despite having a heart of gold.

Or a dwarf prince/princess who is the biggest jerk.

A City Elf dealing with and rising above the injustices pushed on the elves, and possibly trying to improve conditions for her people.

A Dalish Elf who suddenly finds herself stuck among the race which she's internalized to the enemy of the Elvhen. (My Mahariel doesn't believe this to be an absolute truth, and she shares her assassin lover's taste for human women, but in general she hates and fears those humans who have actual power, and she's leery of some of the ones who don't as well.)

My favorite was my female Surana. I RPed her as having come to the Circle before she had conscious memory and expecting to live her entire life behind it's walls.  Freedom was like chugging a huge lyrium potion for her.  Flirty, fun and mischievous by nature, but with a good heart.  She was the closest I had to a 'paragon' Warden, always trying to help/save as many people as she could.

My second favorite was my Male Amell.  I played him as a gentle healer thrust into combat, kind of naive and sweet and a little lost out in the big world.  The events of the Joining and Ostagar kind of traumatized him and it took him a long time to trust anyone again after that.  Leliana was kind of a hard sell for him because of her secrecy, but eventually when she opened up to him, he learned to trust again.

My King Cousland was a bit of an ass.  Hard as nails, no nonsense, he felt the nobles had a duty to the people on their lands and was incensed about Isolde's folly (he had Jowan sacrifice her for the ritual, feeling it was worse to kill a child and that the Circle route would take too long).  Had unhardened Alistair (which he felt was unsuited to being king) kill Loghain because he didn't want the General interfering in his life with Anora and married her. Kept Leliana as his mistress.  He's the only warden who I burned Amaranthine to the ground on (he felt the city was lost).

My main was Aedan Cousland played him like a cliche hero. Did everything right, but in the end had a falling out with king Alistair over recruiting a special some one,at the same time seeking his OGB,and the OGB's mother.

The caste less dwarf was a depressing one, along with the city elf,yet both are my second mains. Anti villain dwarf, and anti hero elf,one is forced to do crime to help his family, the other fights for his family's survival becoming a role model as-well as a symbol of hope. Both of them heroes, with the dwarf forced to do things he hates like helping his brother in law become king.

As for my third main the noble dwarf is a jerk who only cares about wining, and is really a villain. Felt wrong backstabbing almost everyone.

The human female mage.

My "main"(and absolute favorite) is Rayne Amell. Brought to the Tower at the tender age of 5, but not before being the subject to a Tevinter mage's experiments with lyrium brands after he had heard of the success a rival had with an elven boy. Luckily Templars had been able to track her and rescue her, but she would wear the brand on her face for the rest of her life.

She had a sharp mind attached to a sharp tongue. Her sarcasm helped to mask her fear. She learned that not even within the confines of the Tower were the mages safe, not only from Templars, but from other mages. She had a flirty nature and knew how to use it to her advantage when she finally gained her freedom.

That's the basic condensed version lol. I'm currently still writing my fan-fic based on her. Starts from her time within the Tower, to joining the Wardens and the events of the Blight including Awakenings. She would go on to travel the world, in hiding from her former lover and father of her child. She would eventually end up in Kirkwall and meeting her cousin Vector Hawke.

Okey dokey. Fem Cousland. Panicking on night of betrayal. Kills anything that comes at her but wants to get the hell out. Wants her mum and dad. Doesn't want to stay, doesn't want to leave them. Pours all the grief, shame, survivor's guilt etc onto Duncan. Hates him for awhile for dragging her away. Realises that deep down she is glad to be alive but shocked to find she can feel that. Feels like they have been betrayed a second time by her. Her feelings toward Duncan abate somewhat.

Then she reaches Ostagar and meets Alistair. The purposeless meanderings of her emotional state are snagged by those warm brown eyes and eventually she comes to a calm and peaceful stop. He becomes her friend, confidante, moral compass and lover.

Tissues and chocolate anyone?

Your girl sounds just like my Valora.  I even wrote a fanfic about it.  (Just the parts between the siege in Highever to just before getting to Ostagar).  If you're interested, I'll enclose a link.  If not, it's cool.  I know DA is a very personal thing.  Just your story kind of resonated with me since I felt this came pretty close to my own.

I have that one, but rarely played it prior to getting my console to work.  It's fun till I got to the Circle and everyone thinks I've been there AND Cullen has a crush on my girl.   Also the Teagan flirts are for a Dalish, not a mage (my favorite is the mage version of that conversation). Now if I want to play a mage I just use the console to alter my class.  Still buggy but now I just ignore any discrepancies.  That's how I was able to put Rose, my Cousland mage, on the throne of Ferelden. ;)

I still didn't get the Teagan mage flirt lines but eh, he's charming regardless, and Rose got to be queen! ^_^

I use the dialogue fix for Dalish mage.  You have to remember to remove it though if playing a circle mage (especially if you have the Cullen Romance mod).

Added~ The dialogue fix above is not compatible with Karma's companions

Dalish elf. Just felt right to start there as a new player, like an outsider to Thedas being suddenly integrated into that great, big fantasy society. Also like a good underdog story, and in this setting, the elves don't have it good.

I like all of the origins, however, Dalish is probably my favorite..a more laid-back life style compared to the others.

Dwarf Commoner is apparently the least-popular of the origins, but it's always been my favorite. The origin itself is super satisfying (kick a bunch of ass to shame the nobility! murder your mob boss!), as is the follow-through (betrayal by your best friend, finishing off your old gang).

I also like it because it totally justified my evil playthrough. Of course a lifelong criminal would feel that might makes right (side with the werewolves, templars) and have nothing but contempt for human religion and politics.

That one was also kinda fun, but I had him go from basically a fantasy GTA character (without the vehicles, obviously) to being a paladin in build and mindset. No idea how I justified that, though the character is now so awesome that I don't much care.

Dwarf commoner is tied with the city elf as my second main/favorite. To be honest the dwarf noble was my least favorite,I always end up like a wannabe roman emperor.

I wonder if Bioware plans to put the avvar origin in a future game? Would love to make a Conan like character.

My male Human Warrior was so hurt by the murder of his family and friends, that he refused to save Sten, Zevran or other murderers for the cause. He also carried the family sword and shield into the Howe estate, and used them to kill Arl Howe. After that, he retrained to become a 2H Warrior, and placed the family heirlooms back in the regained Estate,

The male Dwarven Noble Rogue was hurt by the betrayal of his brother, but through rumors had enough foresight to acquire assets in case. So when he returned to Orzammar, he began siding with Harrowmont, feinted for a while to side with his brother, but ultimately placed the crown on Harrowmmont. Yes dear bother, you were not the only one that knew how to play the game.

The male Dalish Elf Rogue (my least favorite Origin) ended with one of the better conclusions by acquiring lands for his people, and Leliana as his mate.

The female City Elf was my attempt to fix the poorly made film of Red Sonja, and actually play the tale that strongly reminded me of the REH writing that inspired the character.

Also have at least three Mage campaigns, a female Noble, and other assorted variations until I find myself making the same choices, and hearing the same dialogue and banter.

It's a difficult question.

I do like the Mage one as it's a good introduction into how magic works in Thedas.

However, I have started to notice plot holes (or, at the least, oddities) in all the origins except the Dwarven ones, so I'll say those are the best integrated into the game. I do love the way Dwarf Noble allows you to play a total ass if you want, and that it can work out several different ways. But I think the Dwarf Commoner works the best when you return to Orzammar later in the game.

So yeah, Team Brosca!

My Favorite was a Female Dalish Elf, who had an interest in Tamlen....

She wakes up, he's gone, she's sick, no one wants to search too much for Tamlen....

Then add to those issues, she's being told by her Keeper that she has to leave her clan, her family!, and go with some Shem, she has no choice....and the Shem tells her, you're coming no matter what even if I have to drag you to Ostagar like a sack of potatoes.

(The leave taking walking up the hill away from the clan getting myself into the mentality of that character was so sad.....I cried.)

She hated humans, showed no respect to the king, to Duncan, to Alistair, Leliana, Wynne, Morrigan. Only ones she got along with were Zevran, Shale, and Sten. Killed every human she was given an option to kill (prisoner in cage, soldier in the wilds, Genetivi, Connor all come to mind.) She defiled the Ashes, blaming the Andrastians for much of the opression of the Dalish. Was all depressed and fatalistic, cried seeing Tamlen at the Gauntlet, cried again seeing him as a Shriek....(shut off a potential realtionship with Zevran at that point....too sad). Didn't take Morrigan's deal, a hated Alistair let her take the killing blow (How would he have reacted if he had known about the deal she had turned down?). She was happy to be the one to sarcrifice herself to kill the Archdemon, her pain was over and hopefully it would reflect well on the Dalish and alleviate some of the issues humans have with them.

(Man, that was an emotionally rough playthrough. It was a relief to get it over with. I got a little too into the character.)

It's my third favorite after City Elf and Mage Elf, which might not seem like much but CE wins only by a hair and ME and DC are neck-in-neck.

I like it a great deal too. I tried the dwarf origins last and was floored by how amazing it was, and cursed myself for almost missing such amazing writing and role-playing content because of my conditioned prejudice against dwarf playthroughs. The Dwarf Commoner Origin and homecoming is amazing! I love how flexible the game lets you be with your relationship with your sister, your "best buddy" Leske, other dwarves around Orzammar, etc. And coming back to the place that called you less than manure in the dust after being away from a year, with your sister set to marry and with the baby of a noble, yourself changed from all the things you've done and seen outside of Orzammar, having the power to confront your past and change things there... incredible!

One of my best roleplay experiences also came from the DC Origin. I was originally going to use my DC as an evil playthrough too, since a lifetime of being treated like scum, having to look out for #1 (and Rica), and having to be aggressive to get anywhere would naturally make her ruthless on the surface, right? Well, wrong. My dwarf commoner surprised me by totally calming down once she made it to the surface. She no longer felt angry, aggressive, combative, or inclined to hurt people. She was rather calm and mellow and civil to everyone, and leaned toward the diplomatic outcomes instead of the skull-bashing ones. And I wondered why?

Then I realized she had no reason to be. She had cabin fever down in Orzammar; being trapped in a small cave filled with people who push everyone down, treat everyone like dust, and prevent each other and her specifically from being anything other than a criminal. Once she went to the surface where there's wide space, no caste system, people don't know her, there's opportunities, etc. She just saw no reason to be aggressive. If anything, she felt rather lost and out-of-place since her entire identity came from being an Orzammar casteless, and now she had to make a new identity in a strange land of strange people and things totally alien to her.

Then she went home again, where many old wounds got reopened and perceived friendships got torn open...

I could never have gotten that play experience with any other character, and really enjoyed it with my Dwarf Commoner. ^_^

City elf, plus I love Shianni. She's my favorite NPC. It is very unfortunate that the city elf takes the longest amount of time to return home out of any origin. My city elf chooses to become the bann, and works to help elves whenever possible.

Human/Elven Mage followed by Human Noble.

I liked Mage because it was a solid intro to two of the most important aspects of the world: the Circle of Magi and the Fade.  The various problems surrounding magic are integral to the lore and the history of the world, so it was nice to be able to experience this first hand.  Along the way, we had access to a large number of codex entries on magical lore and a wide range of NPCs to interact with and pick up useful information from... no matter how many times I play through it, that origin never gets old.

The Human Noble origin combined an interesting, dramatic story with the thrill of fighting your way out of the castle and surviving against incredible odds.  There's really nothing I didn't like about it, but it was a bit light on lore, so that's why I place it second on my list.  It also didn't seem to drag on, which is always welcome when considering replays...
