Male Human Noble.

Mage origin isn't that strong, but the rest of the story sort of makes up for the weak origin.

Dwarf Commoner.  Male or (not-pretty) Female Brosca fit the story well and have a reason to be clueless about surface life so you can role-play all those questions about basic feraldan society without feeling like the village idiot.

Dalish was my fav origin. In no particular order:

1- the culture was very interesting to me

2- as mentioned in the post above, it allows asking questions about the setting without seeming stupid in-character

3- you could answer to Alistair that you did see darkspawn before, in an unimpressed tone, which is badass

4- Dalish Warden basically giving no fucks about taint sickness, which is also badass imo

5- having the unique ghoul encounter in camp

6- the dalish clan not being dicks to you during that quest arc

I think human noble, city Elf and mage origins are the best ones. The Dalish Elf one is decent, but I'm never a big fan of both Dwarven origins, I know they make absolute sense in the storyline, just not good origins in my taste.

Fav playthru was as Fem City Elf... best  & most moving origin story.

2nd Best, Male Cousland .

enjoyed both Dwarf origins (1st game was as a DC) & Mage origin. (The only class I haven't done as a solo nightmare run is 2 Handed Dwarf)

Never liked the Dalish origin, kept abandoning the game, and only finished it because I wanted to do all origins. Dalish origin story was pretty "meh", after playing all the others.

I like them all. Favorite is hard to pick. Depends on what I am wanting on that particular play through. They all got high points and low points. Favorite I guess would be between Mage, or Human Noble.  In Mage you got a choice to do what is right to you, good of your friend,  or the good of the circle. Human Noble you get to see what Nobility is supposed to be like. You know Noble, and honorable, with an added dose of vengeance to come.

I didn't love or hate being a warrior and between: the Mabari (Astor was my favorite name,) Alistair (or you know who,) Sten, Shale and Oghren my party didn't need another warrior.  Therefore I often played a rogue and a few times as a mage.  I would have loved to have seen an option for the either of the elven origins to begin as an apostate mage in hiding, but I digress.  Anyway, my rankings:

  1. Human Noble (female): The Teyrn calling you "Pup," a nickname I don't see many (or any) fathers giving their daughters, left me with this question - they gave the genders different (but similar) endings, so why did they give them a "one gender fits all" opening?  Anyway, I loved the gender equality - although I suppose I shouldn't have been surprised as Mass Effect was (mostly) gender equal; seeing nobility and religion in the DA universe was a bonus.
  2. Human/Elf Mage (female): While eventually you get to the Fade, regardless of your origin, I liked starting out with the Harrowing.  Cullen having a crush on your character added some weight when you eventually come back to the tower.
  3. Dalish Elf (male and female): I didn't see much difference between the 2 genders here; I liked learning more about the "free" elves - playing through this origin made the elves distinctly less Tolkien-esque to me.  Seeing the Eluvian, which was featured in the Witch Hunt DLC and DAII, and the only origin (besides either of the dwarven ones) that experience the Darkspawn was cool too.
  4. City Elf (female): I never played the male version of the City Elf origin, and don't want to spoil anything (though I imagine anyone reading this has finished the game at least once.)  But I don't see how the male version could be even half as interesting as the female.
  5. Human Noble (male): My 1st PT; it's up as high as it is due to sentimental reasons and because I didn't think much of the dwarf origins.
  6. Dwarf Noble (male and female) Only this high because of the intrigue among the royal family.  Other than that, the dwarves were very Tolkien-esque, which bored me quickly.
  7. Dwarf Commoner (male): Got bored very quickly with this origin, played it only for the "Casteless" achievement
  8. Human Mage (male): I spent very little time with this origin.
  9. Dwarf Commoner (female): I did not try this origin.
  10. City Elf (male): see City Elf (female).

Cool. What other new origins would you like? I've said the avvar origin before which would be cool since I like the whole barbarian fantasy thing(hopefully not the second or youngest born son/daughter,maybe the oldest child, some kind of role model or something),but that's just me,so what other origin would you like to see in any future Dragon Age game? I wonder if Bioware reads the forums, along with the age old question do androids dream of electric sheep?

Funny, but cool.Does Bioware dream of electric sheep? I kid. B)  I wonder if we can shape the next game? There's so many origins,slave/former slave, barbarian, farmer, dwarf warrior caste, elf (dalish) keeper, etc.

Fully shape no, but feedback does affect things. Most if not all shortcomings of DA2 have been addressed in DAI for exemple

Dalish Female Elf. With Lolly.

Really like, amongst many possibilities, Inon Zur's interpretation of the Dalish Camp. Erstwhile. Whistful. Graceful. Uncertain.

Wondrous.

So far I've found something to like and some interesting angle to play up in every origin, so it's somewhat difficult for me to pick a favourite. My favourite character has a been a (male) city elf, and I am quite fond of the city elf origin, but -- character aside -- I'm not sure it would be my favourite. Dalish elf is pretty interesting as well, and I do like the mage origin. I'm actually quite fond of both dwarven origins, although I haven't yet had a successful dwarf playthrough. The human noble stands out to me the least, really, but I do tend to be less interested in playing humans in games when there are other options, so that's probably why (that, and getting stuck with the dog, which causes me some degree of discomfort whenever I see it).

I suppose all in all, it probably is the city elf, although I could see the dwarf commoner coming in fairly close once I've completed the game with one. I like the more underdog origins, I guess, and the city elf at least has an interesting set of interactions on coming back to the Alienage (even though it does take a while). I also like the edge it gives to interactions with just about every group encountered in the game.

City Elf.  Belorfin Tabris (sword & shield warrior) is a redeemer who loved his family, and fought hard for elven rights.  He was as good as good can be.  He was also silly, and loved to make Morrigan laugh.  He became the first bann of the alienage, but he had fallen in love with Morrigan by then, so he stepped into the eluvian.  To be continued...

Human Noble.  Jeffrey Cousland (also sword & shield) felt like his noble birthright was stolen from him by Howe.  Jeffrey was a good man, but he intended to see his power restored.  That did happen, but he never did become teyrn of Highever.  When he saw the beautiful queen of Ferelden, he jumped at the chance to marry her, becoming the new prince-consort of Ferelden, teryn of Gwaren, Warden-Commander of Ferelden, and arl of Amaranthine in the process.  I like to imagine that he and Anora grew very close during their marriage, although the game never acknowledges this.

End slides being problematic at best in the ending for even my 'dick-ish' King Cousland, he was welcomed back to Denerim by a smiling Anora.  I'd like to think they found some common ground, though his heart already belonged to the Bard from Orlais.

Yea, I imagine Loghain was spinning like a top in his grave over that one...

As fighting style goes, I prefer the mage, but not the best origin. For the best origin, the Human Noble. The whole story is much more personal.

Human Noble that becomes a mix Oberyn Martell/Jon Snow with a Tony Stark evolution.Rebellious Playboy Prince who was trained to fight, command,& rule with justice & mercy by his father. When his family died so did his very soul.In game if you didn't know who the PC was you would think he was a villain of sorts.

My first and so far only full playthrough has been with a Female City Elf and it's a really good origin. It ties with Human Noble and Dalish Elf in terms of how excited I was to play the character. From an objective story view point, I think the only weak one is the Mage origin.

Dalish elf is my favorite origin. All origins are interesting to explore, but the one I'm fondest of is certainly the Dalish. Not only that I find their culture and traditions fascinating but I also really liked that the clan has a close community feel to it. That cutscene at the end of the origin story where you say goodbye to the clan is still very touching, even if it's been four years since my very first play-through.

A City Elf dealing with and rising above the injustices pushed on the elves, and possibly trying to improve conditions for her people.

CityElf was great. My 2nd place would be casteless dwarf with NO heart of gold but a healthy mistrust towards anybody else.

for me mage origin is the best. from this origin you can make a picture about how the circle works. eventually you can find there reasons why you think circles are bad thing. also mage templar conflict really affects you when you are a mage. it affects you even more when you romance Morrigan

still this origin is not perfect. have some apostate mage origin would be awesome. i always imagined to be an apostate rebel  bloodmage, but for that i will have to wait. we dont even have bloodmage specialization in inquisition, it´s sad. i just like how almost every npc around me hates that kind of magic. also itś quite poverful magic. and useful.

When I played DA:O for the first time, I tried all origins before deciding which one I would continue. At that time, I liked a lot the tragic Human Noble.

However, after finishing the game multiple time with different origin play through, finally my favourite ones are Mages (elf or human) and City Elf. The city elf doing ultimate sacrifice is very... touching IMO. An elf, raised in an Alienage, a second class citizen, got his wedding usurped by an Arl's son, things get ugly and recruited by Duncan. He continues being a Grey Warden despite all odds, rise above everything to be The Hero of Ferelden, die sacrificing himself to save the very same people that opress his kin. That, is an awesome story.

Surana. Having to deal with prejudices because of their race, suspicion because of their abilities, and the confusion with the Outside, since they were taken from his family as a kid and know nothing about the world - they don't know how to use money or how to earn them, they don't have any practical skills, they know only what they read in the books - and yet they're expected to become the Commander of Grey right after their Joining and save the world. No pressure, right? No pressure at all. xD

My second favourite is Tabris, then Surana. My least favourite is Dalish and Female Cousland.
