Allan Schumacher from the DA:I team started a #MemorableGameMoment tag on twitter, and it's been great to read some of the responses, so I thought I'd create a thread for that on here for the people who don't use Twitter. I'll quote my own memorable moment from the DA:I Twitter thread:

Oh YES! I remember trying to explain the intro to some of my friends, and why it was the greatest thing ever -

Spoiler
you get attacked by an enemy that severely outclasses you, most of your ship is destroyed, everything's on fire, and just before everything really goes to hell, you step into this silent void where you can look into outer space and you just hear your own breathing, AND THEN YOU DIE!!! - and all this said in a very excited tone, so of course they thought I was a bit deranged. One of my most memorable gaming moments for sure, it just strengthened my obsession with Bioware games  :)

EDIT: As noted below, for memorable game moments in Bioware games, please refer to the existing thread: http://forum.bioware...-bioware-games/

Otherwise, for non-Bioware games, have at it...

There is a Momorable Bioware games moments thread made yesterday. So just keep this one strictly for Non-Bioware games.

Thanks! That will teach me to do a more thorough search for similar threads. Will update the OP to reflect this.

Man, the first time I saw this.  What a twist!  I didn't even know I was supposed to be saving a princess!  Until that point, I thought it was a game about killing turtles.*

*actually totally serious

I got a few.

- Finally getting a message in Rome: Total War that the people support you as their leader and you are able to march onto Rome itself and become the Republic's new ruler. But as you do so, civil war and rioting tears your empire apart and it crumbles in front of your eyes.

- Stepping out of the sewer tunnel in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion for the first time and getting hit with the realization that you can go anywhere.

- The first time you enter Mexico in Red Dead Redemption and the song 'Far Away' starts playing. Accompanied by a beautiful sunset. Far, so faaaar awaay.....

- The Stanley Parable. Yes, the entire game.

Same! When I first played this I was quite young, and probably quite easily distracted, so I mostly knew Mario as that guy that jumps on the mushrooms.

- The Stanley Parable. Yes, the entire game.

YES!

Also, among quite a few other moments from the Half-Life universe, the point in Half-Life 2 where this happens:

Some that come off the top of my head are from Gears of War 3 and Arkham City.

Spoiler

I'm sure I could think of a lot more, but those are some that come off the top of my head.

Dark Souls 1 PvP - So I went back to Dark Souls 1 a few days ago to do some PvP and I encounter some guy ganking. I had originally killed him once before when he was alone but this time, with the help of a summon, he was able to defeat me by farming for back stabs. After a few random invasions I meet the ganker again alongside his summon but someone else invades his world with me and is able to assist.

Together we start fighting the ganker and his summon and we keep helping each other out: At one point I saw the host trying to back stab my ally so I rush over to back stab him, at another, I got stun-locked by the host's summon and I was close to death but my ally rushed over to help me and just when the host turns up behind him to attempt a back-stab, he starts spamming God's wrath to push the host and his summon back during which I heal with humanity. We then proceed to destroy the gankers and it was an awesome victory.

I love it when people so dependant on summons and back-stabs start back-pedalling after you defeat their butt buddies and they don't even run away, they lock onto you and keep their shield up and all you need to do is keep hitting them until their stamina runs out leaving them open for attack. I have other memorable moments from Dark Souls PvP too but I wanted to share the latest one from this year. Dark Souls multiplayer has many flaws but the unpredictable nature of it makes it great.

Also throwing ogre poo on dying players is hilarious. GET SHREKED!

The moment I played Deadly Premonition with York's entrance. He was discussing interdependency and whatnot, then out of nowhere this comes up "Proof? Well, in the Tom and Jerry Show they live with each other...."

Yeah, at that moment, I knew I was up for something special.

Uncharted 2, when the hotel Drake's in gets repeatedly hammered by rockets and eventually collapses. The perspective is incredible, at least the first time you play that part of the game.

I can't believe I forgot about that song...

That was awesome, I read online that a ton of people got pissy thinking that their consoles/PCs had broke.

I figured something was up when the screen started getting screwy before that occurred.

Scarecrow in that game is a master troll. I know I'm slightly biased, but still...

Smash Bros. Me and my friend were playing it one night. I was Link, he was Zelda. We had both taken a lot of damage, and had one life left. He had the hammer, and I was falling right on top of it. I didn't die. Link landed on Zelda's head, making her drop the hammer. I quickly picked it up, and knocked him right of the stage! We were both astounded.

The opera scene in Final Fantasy 3/6.

I was a wee little one, but that was the first time I'd seen a 'choreographed'/emotional scene in a video game and it really stuck with me.   I thought it was such a strange, but aptly fitting and deep thing to put into a game, especially where it was put in--shortly before the world ending.  That coupled with Celes' suicide scene, right after the world comes back.  This was probably the first (really well done IMO) emotionally layered RPG I'd ever played and sort of paved the way for the standards I hold for video game storytellers.
