Hiho,

I just recently joined the mass effect 3 multiplayer bandwagon, and 'lo and behold, I really like it. Even better than some f2p titles which do similar things.

But: I have found out that even if there are just a few other noobs like me around, due to the age of the game, most of the playerbase seems very die-hard and veteran. My bit of lurking on this forum only enforced this impression.

So, besides "play a lot", are there any useful tips you have to give to a newbie just getting his bearings?

For example: I just recently started to get why I shouldn't camp at the LZ during wave 11. Well, playing on bronze it doesn't matter as much, but seeing as I'm trying to break into silver and gold, I really would appreciate similar tips.

Some things I'd really like to know:

1) Should I go into pugs on silver or gold, to grab some creds to help me advance in terms of gear, or do I seriously spoil other people's fun by being dead weight?

2) Speaking of creds: To improve my basic weaponry, should I buy lots of cheap veteran packs or does it actually help to save up for spectre packs?

3) Is there any class (preferably available right from the start) that helps a lot even with crappy weapons? (I personally like the human infiltrator with splash Ice and the Human vanguard with decent BiCa and the occasional nova).

You'll find tons of useful tips in the Resource Library, including beginner guides, general tips and tricks and game mechanics.

To answer your questions:

1) I would recommend staying on bronze until it gets easy for you. Then you can move to higher difficulties. Otherwise you are just hindering your team.

2) The general advice is to first max your common weapons, then your uncommon weapons by buying Recruit and Veteran Packs.

3) The Human Sentinel is a good character for beginners without good weapons. You can just focus on detonating Biotic Explosions with the Warp/Throw combo.

Novaguard is a great guy to learn the game, as charge refill U barrier. My go to guy at the start of the game. Power kits (lift nades / collector adept / Asari Infi / all asari , HA, HS) obviously are good for beginner, but if U have a claymore...

WIth the nova guard U shall be able to jump on silver allready, and if pugs complain, well too bad for them.

If U R on pc, i know a guy ...

Are you a grill?

OT: most of it was covered in the first response by garrus.
Two additional suggestions: without any good gun, use the power heavy kits, like human engineer or adept. Try to trick some bsn'ers into your friends list, that will reward you with experiences and credits. As for credits-start with crashsuit...

The love a n00b gets depends on how willing they are to become other than a n00b. You qualify for loads of love by simply posting and asking nicely for help and advice as you have done.

If you ALSO claim to be a grill, then LET THE FAWNING COMMENCE!  Haha.

You've had good advice already, so I'll just send you a FR and we can play - Gold, Silver, Bronze, Wood - doesn't matter, I'll die on wave 1 anyway

As well as the resource lib, there's a very useful Tips Thread with helpful contributions from nearly everyone, well worth reading:

The good people of BSN like to act die hard and veteran, but we're really scrubs. Every last one of us.

Seriously, if someone says they're good, they're probably lying.

Okay, I'm a PC player, if that makes any difference.

The "useful tips" thread was full of stuff I barely understood.

"Tip: play Harrier TGI and use grenade cap gear." - WUT?

Others I lack the experience to tell if they are trolling or not:

"tip 5 : always use missile on double banshee, they are too deadly."

Just by lurking, I got some idea of the shorthand people use here ("66644 build"; "AF" = Annihilation Field, etc.) but other than that, lots of stuff I really don't get. Except the really obvious trolling.

About 9/10 ths of that thread is people joking around. I think the best way to get help is to ask a specific question.

TGI harrier refers to using a Turian ghost with a harrier, widely considered to be one of the easiest loadouts to do well with. Especially with the grenade capacity gear which will increase the amount of stim packs (shield restoring power) you can carry.

Someone telling you to missile double banshees is either trolling or inexperienced as it's a common mistake on gold and above, where both banshees will tend to immediately respawn. The only time it's sensible is if you're near the end of the wave on your own, and they're the last enemies left, but even then there's better use of missiles.

1.) I'd recommend getting used to silver and ignoring bronze altogether.  Or find some bsn friends and get them to carry you through gold or silver. The manifest is enormous and the more money you earn, the faster you unlock things.

2.) Generally the most common strategy is to buy recruit packs until your commons are maxed (blue weapons), then veterans until your silver guns are maxed.

3.) Use Turian Sentinel, he is good. Though he's not available right at the start. I recommend Human Adept or Engineer if you're just talking the starter kits.

Here's a general tip, it'll change your life: reload cancel.

Now tell us your timezone and your Origin ID (if it is different from your bsn id). To fill your friends list you might want to post in this section, too.

And bsn can be a harsh mistress when it comes to decide whether trolling or not.

In fact, the link marksmad provided is ... more ... for entertainment. For serious guides you want to focus on the resource library (see first response).

If you have more specific questions, don't hesitate to post them.

- Get used to every difficulty first instead of rushing straight to gold, unless you have friends with experience at ME3 MP willing to help you on gold for creds.

- If possible get used to the way how spawns work in every map. That way you can sort of predict where the enemy is in accordance to where your teammates are if they're blocking spawns and allows you to better position yourself so you have the advantage to pick off enemies from their spawns.

On silver/gold difficulty:

Don't go after big bosses (banshees/atlases/praetorians/primes) right away. Ignore them and go for the real threat, which is smaller, ranged enemies.

Cannibals, marauders, troopers etc. should be your first priority.

You gain nothing by going after the bullet sponges right away. You'll just get obliterated by the ranged enemies, and a new boss will spawn.

Smart players kill smaller, ranged enemies first and save the big ones for last.

Honestly, wayyyy too many things to say and tips to give for just a single thread or post to manage it. I'll restrain myself to what I feel is the top 3:

1 - Have fun. And remember that this is the reason you play this game, so don't let people get in the way of that ;)

2 - find a nice guy/grill from here, get to know them, and get them to friend you on origin and play some games with you, carrying you and showing how it should be done. It's one of the best ways to cut on time needed to learn I can think of.

3 - learn how to use soft cover and right hand advantage. If there is one single thing you should learn, it's that ;)

1) If you're only a Bronze player, you can move onto Silver if you want a bit more challenge and you are confident on your knowledge and skill. Silver and Bronze are where you won't be judged on your skill much at all(unless they're a bunch of d****). I'd say you can move onto Silver just so you earn more money as Bronze may be a waste of time unless you're not confident enough to go to Silver. You don't want to Gold if you are asking these questions. Once Silver becomes too easy or too casual, and you want a challenge, you can move onto Gold. Just make sure your N7 and CPs look decent enough, 'cause pugs are a-holes.

2) If you are still maxing out Commons and Uncommons, stick with Recruits, Veterans, and Spectres. Don't move onto higher packs yet until your uncommons are maxed(in weapons, weapons mods, and characters). Uncommon Gears are harder to obtain as they will be overshadowed by the Rares. If you want to try and max out Uncommon Gear, go for Veteran and Spectre(note that it's harder to obtain them in Veteran packs since you only get either one Uncommon or a Rare).

3) Classes that are great from the start would be the Human M/F SentinelHuman M/F Adept, or Human M/F Infiltrator. The other vanilla human classes are much better at higher levels, 'cause they're very underwhelming at lower levels due to some of the power ranks within their power trees that make very good. The Sentinel is good for Biotic Explosions and Survival, the Adept is good for raw biotic explosion damage and crowd control(The Sentinel is also good with this), and the Infiltrator is good for Survival and Raw weapon damage(crowd control is limited on the Infiltrator).

If you like the Novaguard, you could spec him/her into this

My input on your questions:

1) Since you're actually asking about this stuff, I actually wouldn't mind carrying you if I was on PC (I'm on PS3) since it shows a willingness to learn. I've had level 1 characters be very helpful with power detonations on characters that can't detonate them personally (such as the Geth Trooper's Flamer) but that is rare.

HOWEVER! It seems that Gold is completely saturated with shameless leechers who want nothing less than to actually contribute, so I would HIGHLY encourage sticking to Silver for a bit! I'd say, level all classes to maybe 7+ in Bronze before upgrading. This will give you some extra skill points for power.

If you actually build up a bit of stuff and a bit of experience before going up to gold, the existing higher tier players will be VERY thankful. I've actually added a LOT of less experienced gold players to my friends list to invite me along when they need a hand, JUST because they put in that effort and wanted to actually play the game and not spend all their time dead, seeking out the nearest Banshee just to get killed, leeching for easy credits.

2) Many people will tell you to spam Veteran packs until your uncommons are maxed. It's definitely a cost efficient way of maxing them out, but I'm personally not sure maxing them out is even important, since most of what you ultimately use will likely end up being Rares/Ultra Rares, anyways. The big advantage of it is you'll get low level equipment, like ammo, in higher tier packs instead of uncommons if you max all the uncommons first. Which is definitely a great perk. I'm just not sure it's worth spending all that time deprived of rares, is all.

3) Out of the starting kits, the Vanguard is easily the best power spammer. Since Nova has NO cooldown other than your barriers, and Biotic charge REFILLS your barriers, you can basically do an eternal Charge-Nova-Charge-Nova-Charge-Nova loop. This crap can wreck gold with extreme ease. Afterwards, I'd give it to the Sentinel for their ability to set off easy Biotic Explosions, and durability. Next is the Adept, for having some of the strongest Biotic Explosions in the game (Shockwave is +65% BE damage with the right upgrade, and Warp is +50% with the right upgrade. This class is one of only two that gets both.) It also has singularity to quickly deal with groups of unshielded/unarmored enemies (just throw a shockwave at it!) Engineer is next, It's great and very power based but it doesn't get hefty BE bonuses like the Adept.

The infiltrator and the soldier are easily the most weapon based, with skills that raise weapon damage by a percentage (Tactical Cloak and Adrenaline Rush) and "lesser" offensive skills. The human infiltrator's Cryo Blast is a supportive option that durther increases the damage you can do to armored targets/ immobilizing unshielded/unarmored ones, and Concussive shot, while a fine power, kind of competes with Adrenaline Rush for the cooldowns.

In other words, since you already mentioned using the Vanguard, my advice is to take it into Silver, Spec it so it has 0 Shockwave and 6 in everything else (Many will disagree, but until you get better, you WILL want that bonus to health and shields!) And just charge-nova-charge everything you can. Use the M8 avenger (it's very light for what it delivers) and no secondary gun, for times you don't feel comfortable getting close yet (like Banshees/ Cerberus Phantoms) or for times charging is not an option (Cloaked Geth Hunters/ Cloaked Cerberus Phantoms/ Enemies in areas you cannot charge to.) Use this to build up your arsenal a bit, and then start experimenting elsewhere once you have better guns.

1) Bronze v Silver... play whichever one you have a higher percent of getting through all of the objective waves (3, 6 and 10).  If you are always winning Bronze, for example, go up to Silver.  Obviously it doesn't have to be 100%, but essentially for working on your manifest you want to keep your odds of completing the match somewhat high without investing a bunch of credits (that means don't go to platinum and use all your gels, rockets, and ops in a failed mission).  This is why random gold or platinum games as a rookie may not be productive unless you land with veteran players.

2) Essentially Recruit Packs are more for "common" unlocks, Veteran Packs are more for "uncommon" unlocks, and then Premium Spectre, Arsenal and Reserve Packs are for "rare" and "ultrarare" items.  Spectre Packs are for a balance between "uncommon" and "rare" with an ok chance at ultra rare.  This is all "for the money."  Jumbo Equipment Packs are for consumables like medigel, weapon amps, armor modules, etc but not unlocks.

It makes the most sense to me to unlock uncommon things before trying to unlock rares or ultra rares because the weapon mods are pretty important to making nearly any gun decent.  If you try to rely on rare or ultra rare unlocks, there are only a couple weapons that are decent without supporting mods.

You didn't post your manifest, but in general starting out it is probably better to take a character that has power that can do damage since you don't have good weapons yet.

I disagree about novaguard being a good starter class.  You will find you will die a LOT when you move up from the lower levels to higher ones.

your choice of an infiltrator is a good one because survivability at higher levels is much easy with any of the infil classes.

There will be a skill wall as you move up but team mates will generally be fine with you in their group if you help with objectives, equip consumables and generally be a team player.  If if you fail at it vets in most cases will be happy for you to be on their team.

When you start a higher level match and realize that one player is really doing well, follow them around as they battle.  They probably know where the spawns are and you can help clear them.  You will also learn a lot about the game just by observing what they do.

Okay, most of this stuff is very(!!!) helpful. The resource library especially. Some of the more nifty stuff (canceling animations and the like) will surely take some practice, and I usually don't like that kind of stuff (exploits), but hey, we'll see where it leads me. I'm really glad that my instincts so far seem to be right (regarding builds (CC/Power damage over Weapons) and the buying stuff. I seem to have really bad luck getting mods, but hey, the RNG trolls everyone, I guess.

If you like the Novaguard, you could spec him/her into this

Funnily enough, that's pretty much how my first Vanguard ended up in terms of build (except for equipment, haven't got those nice mods yet). Very fun to play with, especially on lower difficulties with a team around.

It's great that people offer to play with me, but being an adult guy with a proper job which requires a lot of flexibility (shifting work schedule every week) and a wife, I'm not that confident of finding regulars to play with, but heck, I'd appreciate having people to play with nonetheless!

My timezone is GMT+1, Origin ID same as here, even got the same avatar. (Props to anyone who recognizes it)

One more question for now: What the heck is a "manifest"?
