The good people of BSN like to act die hard and veteran, but we're really scrubs. Every last one of us.

Seriously, if someone says they're good, they're probably lying.

Rusty is really good. You can believe this. But he's Xbox360.

I am an appalling scrub, which gives me sympathy with peeps who are starting out.

About 9/10 ths of that thread is people joking around. I think the best way to get help is to ask a specific question.

It's nearer 99%, although some of it is true. It's more a guide on what not to do.

You meant recruit packs, didn't you?

She so did.

I think there's too much in this thread, and the Resource Library, to learn and remember. Try playing a fair bit and asking specific questions of the people you play with after the game. Nitrocuban gave the simplest advice to follow.

First of all, I wanted to give a big thank you for the feedback provided.  I was looking to start a similar thread myself, so found a lot of pointers here helpful.

To OP: If you just started, I would stick to bronze until you feel comfortable with the game.  It is quite different than single player.  Recruit packs are cheap and maxing out your starting weapons will make you sufficiently equipped for silver once you are comfortable with game mechanics.  Stick to ranged damage until you are comfortable with boss mechanics, map layouts and spawn locations.

To other readers I would like to hear your opinion (I am slightly more advanced than OP, generally have tier 1 or 2 of most weapons and only a few kits still locked):

Big Question: What do experienced players consider a passable level for a random PuG in a gold group?  50% below top scorer? 66%? 75%? (Note, no scorewhoring assumed, nor damage from missiles)

Small Question 1: Having tried AIU and enjoyed shotgunning things into face, I was wondering why people prefer Claymore to Raider (at least on silver).  I suspect that on gold+ due to damage resistance one big shot > two smaller shots even if the net damage of the two shots before DR would be greater, however I am not sure why this is still used in lower tiers.

Small Question 2: Is there any way to measure the connection speed to host before starting the game?  Running Valkyrie and getting sync killed by banshee outside of extended AF range is not the most fun moment in the game.  Would like to avoid those if I can!  Also, how often do people end up KOed with repair matrix active?  Is this just latency?  Seems like every other time lately I hit Repair Matrix, get KOed anyway and just lie there with nice green faceplate and minus one charge.

It's great that people offer to play with me, but being an adult guy with a proper job which requires a lot of flexibility (shifting work schedule every week) and a wife, I'm not that confident of finding regulars to play with, but heck, I'd appreciate having people to play with nonetheless!

My timezone is GMT+1, Origin ID same as here, even got the same avatar. (Props to anyone who recognizes it)

One more question for now: What the heck is a "manifest"?

A manifest is what you find at your N7 HQ. Click the little ME3 icon under my avatar (for example) to see mine.

There are quite a few of us on the Eastern side of the Atlantic. I'm an hour ahead of you, and I play at random times when I find myself free, so hit me up.

Okay, most of this stuff is very(!!!) helpful. The resource library especially. Some of the more nifty stuff (canceling animations and the like) will surely take some practice, and I usually don't like that kind of stuff (exploits), but hey, we'll see where it leads me. I'm really glad that my instincts so far seem to be right (regarding builds (CC/Power damage over Weapons) and the buying stuff. I seem to have really bad luck getting mods, but hey, the RNG trolls everyone, I guess.

Funnily enough, that's pretty much how my first Vanguard ended up in terms of build (except for equipment, haven't got those nice mods yet). Very fun to play with, especially on lower difficulties with a team around.

A Manifest is your profile of what you've done and accomplished. The N7 HQ will show your manifest for you.

The Novaguard build I gave you is pretty much what most people use, just not the weapon. The weapon was just merely there for show.

BQ:  The problem here is an assumption about the XP correlating with usefulness in a game.  To some extent it does, but it depends on too many other things to make a generalization.  I would say though that in a Gold game if you get around 20,000 points and were there the whole game that is a bad sign.  When I purposefully tried to get as few personal points as possible in a gold game (QFI w/ Sabotage only), I think I ended up with 22,000 pts (it might have been UUG though, so a few XP modifiers were there).

You can always get assists, help with objectives, and revive someone who is nearby (not run across open ground for hero revives that just end up in you getting downed).

SQ1: Claymore v Raider is personal preference.  Raider is probably actually "better" on AIU, even though it pains me to say it.  Claymore will have greater range with a single shot though.  Raider has much higher average damage per second within its effective range.

SQ2: Someone made an ME3 Pinger program a long time ago that was supposed to show your ping to the host, but that only worked if the host actually returned pings (many do not).  The alternative is to vote to kick on the host and see how long it takes for the X to appear.  It is a pretty crude method though.  If the game takes a long time in the load screen then just leave.  Also if you leave very early in the match you will get to keep your consumables.

I pretty much pug exclusively. For me I don't judge a relatively low N7/CP person on score, I judge them on waves 3/6/10. Did they actively help, or hurt during those waves? Did you missile a spawn on the opposite side of the map while I'm trying to 4 hack? Then I don't care about your score, I just don't want to play with you any more. I also realize that there are no set in stone revive rules, but I hate when I revive someone 5 times, and then when I go down they tea bag me while trying to up their score. Then I start actively trying to kill them with abominations. Which makes me lol. And helps me achieve the revive medal. Win/Win

2) Many people will tell you to spam Veteran packs until your uncommons are maxed. It's definitely a cost efficient way of maxing them out, but I'm personally not sure maxing them out is even important, since most of what you ultimately use will likely end up being Rares/Ultra Rares, anyways. The big advantage of it is you'll get low level equipment, like ammo, in higher tier packs instead of uncommons if you max all the uncommons first. Which is definitely a great perk. I'm just not sure it's worth spending all that time deprived of rares, is all.

QFT - make sure you have consumables to use every match, then focus on buying packs with rare cards. When you start running low on consumables, go back to building up your supply by purchasing recruit / veteran / jumbo packs.

I cannot emphasize enough how much of a difference ammo consumables make, they are far and away the most important of consumable for any difficulty above Bronze and will help immensely.

Have fun!

FYI - score is not a great factor for determining your contributions for many reasons. All experienced players are going to want / expect you to contribute with the objective waves, that is priority #1. The key is to understand that enemies will spawn indefinitely until the objective is complete, so you do not want to kill anything that doesn't directly interfere with the objective.

Many times, if you are not personally needed to complete an objective (say on devices or deliveries) you will want to draw aggro away from the objective's focal point, but no necessarily kill stuff. If it is a hack or an escort, always be present for it. Occasionally, more advanced tactics will be needed to complete these (ie. kiting enemies away) but this is rare. Far too often people are not in the objective circle, and it is the wrong move.

As far as the Claymore vs Raider goes, congrats, you have already figured out the big BSN lie. The Raider is superior to the Claymore in almost every way, especially if you are off-host and can squeeze in more than 2 shots

I am not generally bothered by score, but I will be bothered if you never gel while a) need revive every 5 seconds, b ) die in the middle of hell hole or/and very far away. (And I am saying that as revive junkie). Basically I can carry match if people can somehow hold their own, score doesn´t matter. If everyone dies left and right and need constant reviving, messing up spawns and panic and bleed out, then we have a problem.

Thanks again, everyone.  I do know the vein-popping feeling of being the only person in the hacking circle (as I mentioned, I did spend a fair share in bronze/silver).  Glad that most people are willing to judge others by things other than the score.  I'll feel better about participating in matches with people outscoring me as long as I am confident I am not directly harming their gaming experience by screwing up during objecting phases (or blowing them up with abominations).

1.) I'd recommend getting used to silver and ignoring bronze altogether.  Or find some bsn friends and get them to carry you through gold or silver. The manifest is enormous and the more money you earn, the faster you unlock things.

This. Ignore Bronze. You're not going to be "dead weight", or "dragging your team down" on Silver, and with how long it takes to max a manifest (and how totally manageable Silver is, even for new players) there's truly no reason whatsoever to mess around with Bronze.

So true. I've still yet to unlock any of the piercing mods on my alt account, and there's no way I have the patience to play on Silver, so those AP/Drill rounds are precious, precious, precious. Too bad you can't transfer consumables between your accounts- I have 255 AP III's on my main account, just sitting there, probably never to be used (since I have like, 80-100 lvl IV's)...

Can't say I fully agree with skipping Bronze.

I think once you have learned the layouts of the maps, where the ammo boxes are, etc. then you move onto Silver. But if you end up in a group with all beginners on Silver, it's going to be tough.

I know that's tough to imagine for us 1000+ hour players, but that's the way it is

You shouldn't worry about that. Just grab as many active friends as you can, and you'll eventually find out at least some of them are online every time you play :)

You don't have to focus on just one friend, quite the opposite: different players have different capacities and skills and are better and worse at different things, so chances are you're gonna learn more if you play with more people.

Would add you myself, but I can't play this game right now so... :/

I disagree about novaguard being a good starter class.  You will find you will die a LOT when you move up from the lower levels to higher ones.

Its a good starter class because you don't need good weapons/mods to make it work. Infiltrators definitely make crappy weapons better, but most infiltrators are still primarily weapons classes. Which, when you only have the starting weapons, is problematic, at least if you want to play on higher difficulties. This is why people say that powers classes (like the novaguard, or the slayer, or the GT,  or the collector, etc.) are good starter classes- because you can kill stuff, even stuff with lots of armor, without having decent weapons. (for instance, as I mentioned above, I don't have any piercing mods yet on my alt- which means that Gold+ is rough, because of that armor DR- so I was extremely happy when I unlocked the collector, because you can kick ass with the powers build and barely use your weapon at all)

Sure- play Bronze for the first game, when you first buy that copy of me3 and take it out of the package. Then move to Silver. But from the OP it sounds like they've already played a handful of games, meaning they're ready for Silver.

WTF? I thought the first match was supposed to be Platinum Collectors?

Can you imagine the people who beat the single player on Insanity starting MP and thinking "Ya, I'm ready for Platinum, obviously" as they use their level 1 soldier with the Avenger I?

I use the AP IV's quite a bit, I just seem to get more of them than any other level 4 ammo. And do it, destiny's for gaylords- plus, we haven't played me3 together in a while.

Re: not getting many weapon mods.

Some of the common mods drop from Recruit packs, and some uncommon mods and gear drop from Veteran packs, but the majority of the uncommon mods and gear, and pretty much all the rare ones, usually drop only from the 60k & 99k packs. That's my understanding, anyway.

IIRC, the normal piercing mods are uncommons, and the HVB's are rare. I probably have all of the other uncommon mods (at lvl 4 or 5 at that) except for the piercing mods, which you really need for Gold+ (especially since I have very few lvl II-III AP/drill, and no lvl IV obv), and a few of the rare ones as well (although not the HVB, naturally). Just crappy RNG luck (working as intended, in other words).

As someone who hasn't put 1000+ hours into this game, I agree. I've played some silver games like that and they didn't go well...

I guess the best way to know when you're ready for silver is when bronze gets too easy/boring. Or you can just see how you do against collectors on bronze (imo that's like intro to silver but I swear I've played silver games easier than that)
