OP: Welcome! Here is some love:  <3

Everything else has mostly been covered :)

Also, for Zana - glad to see your questions have been answered. To reiterate - score matters little. It can be useful to measure your progress and contribution level, but as others have stated so long as your completing objectives / reviving and generally being a good teammate then you are definitely not dead weight.

Some of my favorite / most fun games have been where I trolled the enemies and distracted them while getting mostly assists on kills ... came in dead last on the scoreboard but I know I contributed and had a ton of fun doing so. All about perspective :)

The good people of BSN like to act die hard and veteran, but we're really scrubs. Every last one of us.

Seriously, if someone says they're good, they're probably lying.

It doesn't matter which difficulty, I ALWAYS have to use an Ops Pack on Wave 1, even Bronze

Going for Silver in a rush and skipping Bronze is a terrible idea.

You don't know what kind of game you're going to get. Today, I found my whole squad to be dying every round. Probably because they were beginners leeching for credits. If you end up in one of these, there is no hope to surviving until the end.

What you want to do is make some Bronze games. After you make one, you'll have 15000+ credits, which you will then use to buy Recruit packs to stock up on consumables. Consumables are VERY important. I hate to be playing some random PUG Gold game and see my squad refusing to use medi-gel. It's awful.

Plus, you'll need to ''max'' your Common (blue) items. These include the default weapons, the characters and mods. I was making the mistake of not doing this up until recently. You'll do this to get your default weapons in a better state and most importantly to make your humans look shinier.

On Bronze, play against all enemies on all maps. This will give you a better idea of how enemies try to kill you, so you don't get the bright idea of using melee on a Banhsee.

Try to find a class you feel comfortable with. If you must start as a Soldier, so be it. I started as a Vanguard, but I already had experience from previous games. Vanguard might not be bad for beginning. Spec your Charge for healing your barrier and spam it in dire situations. The Nova that people keep talking about is a high risk/high reward sort of thing. To this day, I get myself killed from trying to do that combo.

After a while, you'll definitely want to upgrade your awesomeness. To do this, research explosions. Fire explosions are among my favourite. And, seeing your name followed by ''(...) Explosion'' on the kill feed is priceless. You'll make the niggas go like: ''Daym dawg, dude just popped an explosion.'' At least that's what I like to think.

I don't think you play on PS3, if you did, I could show you the ropes. Have any questions, ask away!

WTF? I thought the first match was supposed to be Platinum Collectors?

Can you imagine the people who beat the single player on Insanity starting MP and thinking "Ya, I'm ready for Platinum, obviously" as they use their level 1 soldier with the Avenger I?

Got a n7 47 with avenger a couple of match ago, Rio/Reaper/Plat....

Fun times....

@carionis, I'm on Xbox, so, no playing together....

however:

Turian sentinel: you unlock that puppy. great character, that could be your main to go in silver with on eexception, slap a katana or the valkiry on it...

The exception is using the Krogan Warlord against geth: hammer all the things....

QFT.

Turian Sentinel was my step up kit when I moved from Bronze to Silver, and again from Silver to Gold.

Only way he could be improved is if Overload detonated Warp, and he stole some jet boots from his cousins-in-arms.

Tsent is a scholar and gentleman, but I'm going to call a vote in favour of another uncommon kit, the Quarian Female Infiltrator. Her power set synergizes extremely well with your starting sniper rifle, the Mantis. On bronze or silver, simply cloak> sabotage>headshot to kill any non boss enemy. Sabotage staggers which means you don't even really have to be a good shot. Then, use stickies for the few bosses that show up on bronze/silver. The setup is effective even without weapon mods or ammo consumables on lower difficulties which means you can employ it effectively as soon as you get the character.

That was my (mental) other choice, I just feel the Turian a bit more sturdy as a starting kit and it could make the common/uncommon weapons more efffective. It took a while for me to L2P a sniper infiltrator and I do not want to frustrate teh OP.

BTW he/she has the QFI unlocked!

To other readers I would like to hear your opinion (I am slightly more advanced than OP, generally have tier 1 or 2 of most weapons and only a few kits still locked):

Big Question: What do experienced players consider a passable level for a random PuG in a gold group?  50% below top scorer? 66%? 75%? (Note, no scorewhoring assumed, nor damage from missiles)

As long as you try to help with objectives, try to revive other players and maybe use a medigel or two if no-one can revive you then you're a good teammate. Score is a pretty good measure of how quickly a player kills enemies but that is definitely not all there is to being a good teammate.

If someone isn't actively making the game significantly more difficult for me, I don't care how few points they get.

Like others have said, the things that usually do frustrate me are people constantly needing to be rescued from bad situations, ignoring 3/6/10 objectives, making spawns drop into my head, etc.

I disagree with others about score. If you end up with <40k on a full 11 wave Unknown/Unknown/Gold game, you didn't do well.

For starting class, I recommend Human Sentinel 66606. Warp + Throw is a great combination of powers, and Tech Armor with the human combat roll gives good survivability.

Check out the starter guides in the Resource Library. This vid is pretty good from what I remember.

This thread of mine has a lot of good stuff for a beginning to intermediate player looking to step up their game.

In particular, you really should learn:

Soft Cover (Right Hand Advantage)

Reload Cancel

Revive/Fall Stagger Cancel

Which mods are useless on which weapons (check out Denarius15's Weapon Guide)

Bosses (where to shoot, how to deal with them)

Combos (Biotic, Tech, Ammo)

Probably a bunch of other stuff I can't think of right now...

I'll take someone who scores 5000 on U/U/G but helps with objectives over someone who scores 150k and doesn't play objectives.

I challenge you to find someone who is genuinely helpful on objectives, revives, doesn't die constantly and scores <40k on 11 Waves of UUG.

Sabotage spam doesn't count.

I'm not sure you grasp how low 40k is. It's pretty close to AFK.

Well, I think if someone's doing their best to help out, they'd almost always also get some minimum baseline amount of points, too. Maybe I should revise what I said to include that points can be an important metric, but that it's not what I place the most importance on.

It's not that low if I'm in the lobby

But seriously, you're adding requirements that I never mentioned. I don't care at all if he revives or not or if he dies constantly or not. So long as he helps with objectives and doesn't annoy me, it's fine.

I agree, specifically because the latter will actively make objectives waves harder. I'd rather have a noob who at least stands in the hack than some tryhard nuking **** on the other side of the map and then it respawns 20ft away from the circle

If you're the host and preset the game to collectors, you are instantly a wonderful teammate in my book. The opposite, if you preset it to cerberus.

#1 tip I (surprisingly) haven't seen mentioned yet:

WATCH YOUR BACK

I cannot possibly count how many times I've been eaten by a praetorian, stabbed by a phantom, burned by a pyro, etc. that snuck up on me while I was focused on killing something else.  Don't get tunnel-vision, look around you every few seconds.

Regarding spending credits:  the generally accepted wisdom has already been posted on here, and it's pretty good.  I'd personally suggest, however, that before you've maxed out even your common guns, you should save up 100k or 200k credits and buy one or two arsenal packs to unlock a couple of the rare guns.  Then go back to the recruit/veteran packs, and don't buy any more of the expensive packs until you've maxed out the common & uncommon guns.  It's a gamble, admittedly - you might get a Hurricane, which is pretty much always useful; or you could get a Kishock, which is only good in certain situations and for certain playstyles.  But having a couple of those higher-tier weapons in your arsenal can make the progression easier.

Also, the store will troll you.  The gun/gear/ammo that you really want will be the last one you get.  All you can do is be patient.   ...Or know a guy.

The basic humans that aren't Soldier or Infiltrator are good even if You're weapons are crap

Played well the Vanguard is slightly annoying but a fairly easy way to breeze through silver (keep your cooldowns fast for that one)

My Bronze-Silver transition character was the Jug. How happy was I when I unlocked it in a pack.

I'm very proud to say that I can now play Gold with less durable characters, when I could barely do Silver with a thousand shield capacity.

Use these tips. Only, we know you won't. Having a job on the side, this is a bit much to study. See what works for you.

Die a lot in Bronze and realize why you died. Pretty soon you'll have many things in your muscle memory. You'll do things like charging when your barriers are down, overloading shields and warping armor without even realizing it. And that, is when you know you have improved.
