The N7 program is a logical progression of high end military specialists today, but translated to a future where space travel is common. So we can forget that it takes less time to go across the Galaxy than to travel to the restroom because the story holds up as interesting with almost human characters. Mass effect also broached many social issues that we see in our lives that added to our immersion into the game world. The NPC "opinions" and "feelings" and how they fit into the story were beginning to make the NPC seem like real characters. This continued to evolve in Dragon age where choosing team members for a quest made a difference - I feel this type of character development is still in its infancy; however the value to a quality game immersion and future applications in virtual intelligence are mind numbing. Some day our children may find their teachers in a console or computer and may learn to get along better with others even when they are alone! Doesn't that sound a bit like the ancient Quarian AI?
Tali, in particular, breaks down the logic of Dolan's rapid aging like she is thinking through all of the science that we think we know using scientific method and arriving at reasonable conclusions - that was wonderfully done!
An FYI: When you have peered into the atom to see its structure, the existence dark matter can seem hard to swallow. It took a method akin to time lapsed photography of colliding star systems showing a mass of material behaving w/o impulse momentum to open my eyes, but that science project changed the thinking about fundamental matter and inertia and what really affects these parameters. So, I could relate to Tali trying to make sense of a thing on the edge of her scientific understanding.
Shepard is a special case more like Jack Bauer, with the President's ear - that has a special appeal.
So N7 may be significant on the path to practical virtual intelligence -only time will tell.
Lastly, just be thankful you still have frigid months and you may be making history in more ways than you know!
