Bioware has answered this question already. By restricting races to specific body types, it makes it easier to make lots and lots of armor types. The difference races give you a decent range of body types and you'll gets lots of types of armor to customize your look.

quite average. maybe above average

Nah, never, especially considering a third of the US population is obese.

I'm an athlete, have gone to the gym since I was legally entitled to and am not quite built like Shep.

Id be happy with a female character that didn't look like a stick insect compared to her male counterpart like F!Shep was compared to M!Shep, even if it did cause the usual complaints from certain people who think a woman with any muscle looks like a man

The problem is not even that. For example I really wanted to have a heavy build female but I cannot with this game because even the female qunari arms look like sticks when they suppose to be a lot more muscular. I am hoping the female dwarf is better but not holding my breath.

I really hate when they take way choices like this and try to normalize females with only one type of body for all the races but only for females.

in Skyrim, the armor was pretty limited. That is why.

Not gonna lie...I'd kill for Dude Shep's physique....

Thats so typical, people would rather kill for an improved physique than work hard to achieve it.  Man up, stop complaining, lift heavy and regularly, eat and sleep. A good physique is 75% mindset.

I'm a powerlifter and I kind of have Sheps physique, I'm just not as lean as him. All you got to do is have patience, a good exercise plan and pump iron. Simple as that.

Sure, try to be more smart too and see if that happens with the force of your will.

I love physical sports too but there are people of various shapes and no force of will can erase that or their will to hate physical labor. Some people are more built up for that kind of thing than others.

No, there are no special people that have it extra hard (unless we're talking about the physically disabled), any normal person can develop the self discipline it takes to improve their health/strength/physique.

But thats enough off topic for now.

This discussion is plain off topic, and it's beginning to be a bit riled up. Please stop.

That's not a good comparison, intellect is hereditary, muscle isn't.

Anyone can build up mass, yeah, some have it easier than others, some have naturally wide shoulders or a better metabolism, but with enough discipline gain is always possible.

Please take the real life muscularity discussion to Off-topic or through PMs to each other.

ManShep is definitely average-looking if you're the type who spends two hours a day working out in front of a mirror.

That's a shame. I would love it if they implemented the Dragon's Dogma approach and just let us decide how we want our character's body and size to be. I wouldn't mind creating a big badass female mage like this:

I'm guessing Bioware made this choice because it's a game size versus time thing. The more animations you need or the more variables to it the bigger that part of the game will be and the more time it will take to build. They've opted to devote that space and/or time to other things and when the game launches we may well be glad they did if it's gameplay, storyline or even bug fixes before launch.

Fixed bodies sure but they could be fixed bodies that don't have stick arms. Though tbf we haven't seen them uncovered, femHawke was actually pretty fit even though she looked merely slim in some armors

Exactly!  I was typing a long response before sliding down and came across your post.  You put it much better than I did.  :)

I have to wonder what people wish for.  Would they prefer excessive options in CC like a huge bust or huge muscles or would they prefer a game with in-depth storyline (plus, any bug fixes) with beautiful visual gameplay?   I know what I would prefer.

I prefer the nice story and lots and nice cutscenes too, but I wonder....is it so hard to make a character creator like ESO or Neverwinter? And maybe I just didn't notice them but was there any clipping in Neverwinter? The 'touching' explanation seems (to me) bad one since they probably don't make the scenes 8 times each, but make the models to be able to tell where they shouldn't pass and just go over them if there is a problem with the different models.

Or they could have taken the easy way and made few sizes like in SWTOR:)

...anyway just watched a CC trailer and apart from body shapes(or shaping) it looks amazing.

They can make a CC like ES, SR and others. But then that limits other things as numerous people have said

I'd rather have four different races than three stages of burly human dude, tbh.

So do I, but is it too much to ask for some variety in body shape? Err now is far too late to expect that(obviously) but it would have been nice:)....and I am not convinced it will lead to so many limits (but if they didn't make the game with this in mind I suppose it can....)...

...and I am looking at female qunary's arms....please give us 2 options for arm thickness:))

I'd like four different races and three different body types for each, in my ideal scenario.
