Do we know how tall the elves are?

I know they were shorter in both DA1 and DA2, but I liked how they looked in DA2 more.  They had a more unique appearance.  I've played games where elves are very tall and slender.  I like both smaller and taller, but not the same exact size as human.  Does that make sense?  I love the elves.

Well, as we can see from the group shot they seem to be as tall as human females at least.

Inquisition_members.png

Cassandra is way too short in this picture... I always thought she was pretty tall.

In fact, I think everyone in this picture looks weird... Sera is too tall, Solas is too tall... heck, even Cullen and Cole are taller than I would have thought

They're playing with perspective here to an annoying amount so everyone who didn't like the talk about the game's art direction feel free to step out. Anyway, What's worth paying attention to here is the distance from the table of certain characters and whether our not they're standing up straight. For instance Varric likely shouldn't be as tall as Cole's shoulder and the reason he is here is because he is actually closer to the viewer than even the inquisitor; the way his legs are positioned he's likely leaning on the table. Cassandra is notably standing farther back than Solas, if she wasn't the light cast on him wouldn't be as we can see a shadow where she is partially blocking it. That's why she seems the same height as him in this picture. Solas himself is standing just behind Varric as he blocks the light just like Cassandra does. With this in mind the character that stands roughly on the same plane is Cullen, who is not standing up straight and is still taller than Solas.

For Sera the two people next to her: Leliana and Josephine are both positioned to seem like they're the same height as Sera. Like Solas, Sera is standing with her side toward the viewer (there's probably something symbolic in having the elves do that) and at the same time Leliana standing with her whole body facing the viewer like Cassandra. We'd assume that like Cassandra this would put her slightly behind Sera but her foot that is slightly ahead of both of Sera's says otherwise. At the same time that is precisely why Leliana seems the same height as Sera; with her foot forward she is not standing up straight. This combined with her leaning over slightly makes her seem shorter. The explain for Josephine being shorter is much easier as she clearly standing behind both Sera and Leliana.

This picture is not an accurate representation of the heights of the elves, human, and even dwarves of DA:I. This was done very intentionally by the artists (this would have done by the cinematic artists right?). With everyone roughly the same height a line is established that along with the line at the bottom of the tabletop divides the painting into horizontal thirds. The exception of course is Iron Bull who towers over every other character and crosses the line as befits his largesse. At the same time the characters on the sides of the painting, Cullen, Vivienne, and Blackwall, are all standing close to the viewer and are the tallest while not crossing the upper third of the painting. This causes the viewer's eye to naturally fall downward toward the center where the Inquisitor is. This is reinforced by hunched over position of the Inquisitor that combined with Cassandra and Iron bull forms a V that again attracts the eye back to the Inquisitor.

Woo, that was a lot of analysis for a video game screenshot. If I was really devoted I would have broken out my Renaissance art books and cited reference to religious paintings of the time (spoilers: I wouldn't have even mentioned The Last Supper).

TL,DR: Everyone is shorter or taller than they actually are in this. Elves are still shorter than their human sexual counterparts.

Edit: From Inquisitor going either way; warrior, mage, rogue, rogue, what should be another mage, and warrior. Someone probably already caught this but I am on fire! Josephine is the odd one out and the only one in complete shadow so if we're guessing Judases I'd start there. That or she's secretly a mage then I'm much more intrigued.

Very thorough analysis... yeah, I think you are right about this having been done for the sake of the picture... some of these heights just seem every odd, especially Varric being as tall as Cole's shoulder.  That's just plain weird now that I think about it... so you've convinced me.  ^_^

Aww. :(
My Hawke's gonna be sad that his tiny angry boyfriend grew half a foot.

Fenris wasn't that short though.

No? I figured he was about a head shorter than m!Hawke, about the same height as Isabela. But it's been a while since I've played, so...

Wow! That was fascinating. Thank you for sharing! :) If you ever feel like whipping out those Renaissance art books and doing a full-blown analysis, I would be happy to read it!

I'd sort of like elves to be taller, but then, I enjoy tall elves. But whatever.

I don't mind them being more slender, but I will say that the elves look freakishly tiny to me. The female elf in particular just looks SO THIN. Which is what I'll be playing as - hopefully it isn't too bad in the final game.

a little pet peeve of mine in video games is that most characters are exactly the same height only differ between their own respective races.  I understand the manpower needed to adapt armor and animation for a human that is 6'2" versus one that is 5'6"

I think Dragon Age lore has mentioned many times that humans are very varied in looks. The thing that makes Theodosian humans to be humans are that their body is not as skinny or sphagetti like the elves, the males have facial hair, have human skin complexions and they are taller than the dwarves.

So in Thedas, as long as you are taller than a dwarf, with facial hair if you are a man, not looking anorexic and your skin color is brown (pale brown to dark brown), then you are a human.

They are small in frame and stature to humans the exceptions to this are Fenris and Solas, Solas cause he's who he is is like 6ft you can sometimes tell this like in that bit with wisdom and when he kills the mages, Fenris i am not sure why he's tall

I've noticed Solas is unusually tall for an Elf. Both in-game (combat/exploration) and in cutscenes. Other than that, taller than Dwarves by a head and yet shorter than humans by a head.

I'd say if the average Human is between 5'4" - 5'9", Elves should be between 5'0" - 5'4".

Someone took the necromancy spec, I see. :P

(OT, are cutscenes even really an accurate gauge? I can't imagine Solas being six feet tall. Like dayum.)

Solas and the Sentinels seem to share the same model, and Sera is more human-like too. All the other elves are still lanky though and shorter than a human.
