Another gaming example, associated with the WoD but fan-made, would be Genius: The Transgression.

And Autochthon of Exalted has qualities of a mad-scientist's invention, a mad scientist and could be argued to be the god of mad scientists in that universe:

"I was once known by many names. Maker, Creator, Madman, Thinker, Smelter, Blacksmith, and Perverse Inventor. But please, even if I no longer am, you may call by the name I once was. I am Autochthon." (I particularly like Gregg Landsman's take on the Perverse Inventor in Mass Effect: Glorious Shotgun Princess)

Talking of mad scientists...

well it seemed appropriate to me and it is short.

I have a few questions, if you don't mind...

I'd rather not attempt to tackle something that is too complicated, so I was thinking about the C-57D, the spacecraft from the movie Forbidden Planet. Would that be considered 'wierd science'? If so, is it possible to get that level of metallic reflection from a surface in NWN? I realize it would probably have to be fairly high poly to get a smooth curve like that, so will NWN also support LoD? To get that, do I add model_part_L01, model_part_L02... as in NWN2? If not, then I'd probably have to use a lower poly model, correct? What poly count can I reasonably go up to for such a large object?

Thanks! :)

No, that wouldn't be considered "weird science," that's just straight up science fiction. Not really fitting with the theme for this month. Think more Frankenstein, Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde, etc.

the flying saucer would be weird if it had some tubes sticking out of it and some sparking thingies. :)

So... I took a stab at one of these things (background ribbed column thingies):

boris-as-frankenstein-on-the-set.png?w=4

and made these

lower poly version (1960 tris)

column_lo.jpg

higher poly version (7840 tris)

column_hi.jpg

It seems like the lower poly version is fairly high poly for a placeable. I can't think of any way to keep this below 500 let alone 1000 triangles and still be convincing. My question is it worth it for these things?

My initial versions had only 8 ribs but just didn't cut it in my opinion. here it is

I also made this hunk a junk. Textures are placeholders, and I would need help with animation as I've never successfuly animated for NWN.

Ribbed thingies like these are intended to portray high voltage electrical insulators. :)

Though a little vague as im not too familiar with it, the Dr Jekyll Mr Hyde novel and all the spin offs of video games and movies. It would be a great idea to have a potion that turns a player into a mr Hyde/monster.

ive recently gotten into it when looking at a 3rd edition werewolf system on the vault, using moon potions. I liked the idea, but thought it would work better for a dr Jekyll/ mr hyde type feature

From League of Extraordinary Gentlemen:

In addition, i found the famous internet one, Dr Jekyll Mr Hyde the Video Game for the NES, behold Mr Hyde in his 8-bit monstrosity form! Scream in terror as he haunts your very eyes!

In the novel Hyde wasn't some kind of "Hulk" like creature. In fat he was even shorter than Jekyll, the differences between both personalities were more psychological and about behaviour, than physical.

yup, and if you looked youll see why i posted the second image. That shows the real Jekyll as to what he would/ might have looked like from an earlier perspective. and now here as well

18lpb0l7cnkb1png.png

that one is a re-creation from the movie "The League of extraordinary Gentlemen" which added many famous novel characters together (of which id definitely recommend for this month theme), Willhelmina "Mina" Harker from 'Dracula', Captain Nemo from 'Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea', 'The Invisible Man', and so on.

That version was depicted as it suited audiences at the time period. i believe 'The Hulk' came out that same year so it was probably a convenience. Either way it worked and very well could have been brought up from fictional spin offs. Much like how Frankenstein's monster came synonymous with the mad doctors name, or how the monster itself in movies became a brute rather than a gentle giant that he became in the novel.

Its all about how it suits the current viewers and what would be appealing to them. Apparently a giant Hulk very much appeals to today's audiences, i mean i was sold i liked that movie even knowing it was bad! The one i posted is probably the closest you could get to the original novel, even though he still appears to transform into a monster.

Either that or... you could go with the 8-bit Mr. hyde, that one is "spot" on i say

I don't think that it's a accurate description of the creature in the Mary Shelley's novel.

As the creature have been portrayed many times, when it's created is like a newborn in a world that he doesn't understand and even is hostile against him, so he reacts violently. However he learns fast, and evolutes during the plot, So it wouldn't be true say that the creature is innocent as a child, and without evil thoughts. In addition he's truly stronger than a common man...

P.S - Sorry If I'm starting to be "a pain in the neck"....

I could not get the ribbed column resistor thingy to a reasonable amount of polygons so I scrapped it this morning and am gonna try a metal stand for glowy thingies. Took me a half hour to learn how to render proper metal and glass so all i have is this proof of concept so far.

stand_glasscube.jpg

next is to model a proper crystal and stick it on top and then render these procedural textures to a single texture.

You could always do the low or the high poly figure and then create a secondary shadow node with even fewer polygons. Then you could use the item as a static placeable and it wouldn't cause much trouble, if any. Disable the shadow on the higher poly node of course.

Also, feel free to take any of my crystal shapes from the CCC a few months ago and run with them. Use them however you need!

Its not in the slightest, your correct, but what general audiences prefer today is not what the novel or the writer always had intended. Its all about what would suit the proper audience of the time with horror genres. The only good Frankenstein movie i think is good is the 1994 which is based off of Mary Shelly's novel (its quite literally called Mary Shelly's Frankenstein).

And even then its not entirely accurate as it had to appeal to the audiences at the time. I see no reason why you shouldn't. I still would like a monstrous Dr. Jekyll Creature, it would be awesome. And alot of people would relate to it. To me its very 'Mad Scientist' regardless of what it looks like in today's culture

and no, your not being a pain in the neck, unless we get The Crooked Man in. he puts a whole new meaning to having a pain in the neck

For what it's worth I think the image at the end of this link qualifies as weird science, but I bet nobody will make anything like it (it's so weird it's somewhat disturbing).

Great job so far Henesua!!

Maybe make a second placeable of a metal ball with lightening that comes off the top? In the CEP is a Tesla cage like that that can be deactivated or activated to have lightening. In the 2da its listing is "Mech: Tesla Cage (FKY)*"  and the model is called zlc_fky_m93

I don't know if studying that will help you .. great job on the tesla coil so far though!

I could make a thing like that too. But I was going more weird science fantasy and thinking mythalars that look like dice. Still haven't got the textures or emitters working as I wasted a lot of time trying to get my work into blender and exported and realized that I forgot how to do all that. Its been a year since I made an NWN model that worked in game, and all the ins and outs of blender and MDLs are hazy to me. I also haven't got the textures the way I want them for NWN. I had forgotten that I can't bake procedural textures which rely on reflection and refraction etc... to look good.

Models however are low poly. All are under 500. The stand is 392 triangles. The dice range from 4 to 36 triangles. I forget what that lump comes in at, but its less than 100 tris. Maybe 50.

So here's the last renders I made in the morning yesterday in Cheetah3D with the procedural textures before I got distracted wrestling with the above and then walking away to spend time with the kids:

stand_glass4.jpg

stand_glass6.jpg

stand_glass8.jpg

stand_glass12.jpg

stand_glass20.jpg

stand_glasslump.jpg

---edit---

might as well share my process of working on the stand texture. I basically set up a procedural material, apply it to the model, set up ambient lighting only, and then bake it all to a texture. It allows me to try a dozen variations. I had lost a lot of time here because I made the mistake at first of including the affects from an HDRI and couldn't figure out why nothing looked like I expected. Eventually I got on a roll and cranked these out. It required me to make a couple separate black and white (value only textures) that I made from photo references of metal and reworked. What you can see below used three different textures, and then procedural filters. Most totally suck. But I'm using this one I think:

ccc_aa_metal3.jpg

I was ultimately going for a hammered metal. This is not exactly what I wanted as it looks more painted than like black, wrought iron. But screw it. Good enough. You can also see that the crystal will not be included. Its a waste of draw calls to have too many textures, but I think it makes the model easier for others to modify if the crystal and the stand are separate.

The rest turned out like this.
