So I don't know if this is the right place for this topic, if it isn't sorry...but does anyone else fear that varric won't be as good this time. I mean the last game was just him telling his version of the story. And he does exaggerate quite a few times. Could he have been making himself look better than he actually is?
Maybe that's why we have the option to equip him with daggers this time. In reality, he's crap with a crossbow.

Bianca's probably past her warranty by now.

I think the best way to approach this is not to 100% expect the same person was saw in DA2 and be ready to see the side of Varric he kept quiet about. In fact I hope they make his persona slightly different to show he exaggerated himself. If you think about it, we don't really know much about him other than what happened to him in DA2

Awaening Oghren sucked. DA2 Anders sucked. If we follow tradition, DAI Varric must suck!

Nice to know, I'll be equipping him with daggers then. As for him being as good as he was in DA2, well it's the same writer so that's one thing. He still snarks, and he looks so much hotter now. Let's hope for the best.

I'm looking forward to seeing what happens with Varric and what he's like when he's not the narrator (unreliable or otherwise). It's going to be interesting to see facets of his character that he'd naturally want to ignore or downplay when telling a story to a book-stabbing scary armoured lady who is interrogating him.

you forget, we see varric as he is in the cut scenes talking, I'm sure if Varric was given the opportunity to "embellish" his looks his character would have looked something like this:

Except that's what Varric want's not what they want.
If the Varricmancers had their way Varric would be nothing but chest hair.

Varric ... well, at least he, for once, isn't too much out of the handbook of fantasy-dwarf-stereotypes...though they merely replaced the common axe-fetish with a crossbow-fetish. I am glad that he'll be back, he was likeable, entertaining, a little useless maybe in fights, at least for me, but I brought him with me anyways...
And I always "excused" Biowares dubious decison for the exagerrated combat, with enemies from the sky etc, as well as some weird story-twists, with Varric telling this story for us in his exaggerrated way...
I think we'll see lot's of oneliners and stories from him in DAI too, but of course he no longer is the main center of attention, and he lacks a personal agenda with the main hero this time. Somehow I expect him to hit on Cassandra...she really seems to be in need of some chesthair ^^ (Though I would love another scene like the one when he storms Bartrands mansion, I laughed so hard the first time, and it still gets a chuckle out of me...)

@Vox Draco: I disagree.
- No beard
- Charismatic
- No particular love for his own culture
- No notable obsession with battle, mining or stonecraft.
- He likes to party... with other races.
Aside from his height - he's incredibly un-dwarf like. He's a bard for Stone's sake!

Varric's whole thing was just being a sarcastic smart ass. I'm sure he's going to keep that up. That was basically his entire character.

What do you mean by "as good"? I'm sure that he'll be a bit different - character development and all. We've had hints he might be a bit hardened from all the crap he's gone through since DA2, but I'm almost certain he'll be the same awesome guy underneath it all. ![]()

No one seems to be worried that Varric might be in possession of a red lyrium shard for a long period of time. Interesting.

That's because the writers will most likely sweep that under the rug rather than deal with branching paths with 2 versions of Varric...

Hopefully not. I mean, if Varric ends up using that lyrium shard on Bianca the Crossbow and he does that in DA2, I hope we get to see something for that.
The writers have swept enough under the rug already.

I fear... I will find him more interesting in this game than DA2. I didn't really care about him last game, in part because I couldn't really get a sense of what a conflict with between Hawke and him would look like. Now, I know he has problems with the Qunari. Me, too! I like him better already. I expect he'll be a bit more than the PC's genial bro this time, which I'm excited about.
Also, he's totally gonna die. Truly a doomed dwarf.
