I'm looking forward to seeing how Varric changes once he's not the one telling the story.  I don't think he's going to be as lighthearted, and there's bound to be some baggage with Bartrand and the lyrium shard.  I gave the idol shard to him sometimes and withheld it sometimes, so I hope there will be a difference.  I did let Bartrand live, once, after I mistakenly asked Anders to heal him, so I'll be bringing that save, too, but I'm not really proud of that decision.  Poor Varric.

I'm a little worried about Varric myself, since returning PCs seem to have gone 1 of 2 ways thus far IMO.

1. They change a lot, fans don't like it. "I liked Awakening Anders so much better!" etc. (I liked Awakening and DA2 Anders for the record)

2. Their character doesn't go anywhere new and makes you wonder if they were just included for fan service (Oghren in Awakening).

Hopefully Varric has a new story without alienating his former fans.

I don't think this will happen but it would be kinda cool if Varric became a traitor. like one game everyone loves him and in the next he betrays you to save Bianca or something.

Just an idea which would have been cool. but otherwise i think he is going to still be a wonderful companion.

I think Varric has a story to tell, and it might wind up ticking off fans who need it to go just so.  I'd like to see resolution, with Bianca, and with his family and his role in it.  I'd rather see him go down in a blaze of glory than go down as someone who could have been so much more.  Hopefully there'll be an ending for Varric.

Ugh...i hope Varric becomes nothing like the DA:A version of Oghren, that really regressed & ruined his character

Concerning the shard Varric most likely tossed it after witnessing what happened to Meridith to keep it simple and not have a crazy Varric in DA:I but he'll have unique dialogue saying he even considered keeping the thing and might be able to save someone based upon his experiences.

OR

Varric after witnessing Meridith decided to lock the thing away but didn't destory it, the shard having a very small hold on him to at least hang on. He didn't have it long enough to really affect his personality. Some plot point could come up where the Inquisitor needs to get just a shard of unrefined red lyrium and Varric states he has some and a small quest allows them to get it. If Varric didn't have this shard then the inquisitor has to travel into a dangerous Red Templar controlled area that risks your friendship with Varric or another character.  (I hope this is how they handle it)

I am really interested in seeing Varric handle conflict. He doesn't actually seem like he's good at it. He's good at avoiding it by being in a position to control things, or staying under the radar...and in DA2 we mostly see him being able to do those things, but I don't think he will in DA3.

The thing with the shard, will probably get some dialog but as for it actually going somewhere? probably not unless you really did give it to Varric.Which I never let him keep that awful thing.I gave it to Sandal everytime.

Well, tbh I always had Hawke keep it because the attack speed boost was just too tempting to pass up, but it would be interesting if we could import a save file where Varric kept the shard.  Assuming, of course, that such things matter at all... they might not (probably not).

I think there will be some acknowledgement, but not in a way that changes anything.  Sometimes I gave it to him and sometimes I had Sandal craft the rune, because I like Sandal and wanted him to get some action too, mostly, but regardless, you get some short-term rune slots that come in very handy.  Whether Varric gets the rune or not, what happened with his brother and being away from home and his stuff is going to make Varric different.  I think we're going to see what happens to people uprooted again.
