(I don't normally read the New Yorker, heaven forbid, found this by following a link somewhere else.)

Quote from about 18 paragraphs in:

I noticed that when Hale performed as Shepard her lush, dulcet speaking voice hardened somehow, as though edged in concrete. “Shepard’s a military person,” she told me later. “Military people do not get what they want by being emotional.” Indeed, during the session Hale stopped a few times because she knew she had gone “too emotional.”

I remember a few years ago, a thread about the two lead VOs, where someone, I think a ex-military guy, stated that he didn't like Femshep's emotional tone, that it didn't fit his experience. I remember  this as it fit my own work experience. Not military but with some danger, where if you have to yell at someone to do something properly and avoid endangering everyone else, the guy shouldn't be there.

Anyways, I assume Hale read that comment. or maybe got the feedback repeated to her by Bioware folks and adjusted her tone for ME3.

Kudos. I guess.

I have always said this regarding Mark Meer's performance that makes Shepard look like a stonefaced McNuffin. Glad to see some people are finally getting the point.

So where in the quote does Hale state that she listen to fans?

I think Hale and Meer brought a lot of talent to the table.  As I recall, a lot of the time Hale did the lines first - sort of setting the path for Meer.  She is an amazing talent and an icon in the industry.

Meer brought his own forms of talent with the Vorcha, as as I recall he even did a Mordin bit as a place-filler for ME3.

They are both insanely good.  It will be hard to have Mass Effect without them.

There was only one scene in which Hale herself said she had to stop and that was in the EC. In voicing the farewell scene w/ a romanced Garrus she had to stop briefly, saying to herself, "Shepard does not cry." In fact, you can hear her voice crack a couple of times w/ Garrus and Liara in that same scene, so she did bring emotion to the character. Even in previous games she brought emotion to Shepard while Meer took a more stoic, consistent path. As far as listening to fans, I doubt it. Both actors took the military tone from the beginning.

I love Jennifer Hale's voiceover work but I really have to raise concern in anyone trying to pigeonhole what military people are supposed to sound like. I know that this has a North American influence on the universe. As for me, I'd like to think in the future, we don't demand in extreme situations- like farewelling someone you really care about in a respite, that soldiers don't cry.

I have to agree here.

There may be a 'military-type', but that's just it. A type. Personally, I liked when either Shep emoted more - just as long as it still flowed with the scene, its context, and the dialogue choices I was making.

All the sounds needed you will make when you try to hit one.

I prefer emotion over her ME2-style voice acting. Same goes for Liara.

Stones can crack, too. I liked that last farewell scene with Garrus.

Her "we can do this" when they had to draw the Reaper closer during Priority: Earth really stood out for me - not so much like she was going to cry, but just the sense of being exhausted and having to force herself to believe it. Meer's delivery of the line was much more straightforward.

That kind of expression of emotion is entirely appropriate, IMO - sure, she's a soldier, but even most soldiers aren't tasked with single-handedly stopping The End of the World, whereas Shepard has to do that just about every other week.

Aside for the military angle voice actors for the player are very constrained in not showing too much emotion and keeping most things neutral even if they would like to.  The reason being is that you do not want the person playing their shepard to roll their eyes and say 'I would never talk like that' and don't want to be forced to react in a non neutral way.

People criticize the voice actors performances for being too flat but in most cases they are doing that on purpose because they are speaking for the player.  Non player character actors do not have these constraints.
