My problem with Dorian being gay is that he seems to be more and more like a stereotype of a gayman.

I hoped they avoid such tropes, sadly gay guy = flamboyant. They could just as easily portrayed Dorian as a straight man, while having someone like Blackwell as the gay guy.

Plenty of straight guys are into fashion and all flamboyant nowadays (like the Australian comic rove)
While plenty of gay guys are marcho as hell but just so happen to be attracted to other man.

Sadly Bioware seems to be heading further towards stereotypes rather then away from them.
Lesbian = butch hair cut
Gay guy = flamboyant
Bi= root anything that moves

At this rate I'm expecting DA4's token gay guy to be covered in glitter running around in a G-String and carrying on like that "Jack" character from will and grace.

Based on what little we've seen, it's really hard to dissmis Dorian as just a precursor to token gay guys covered in glitter running around in G-Strings.
And actively avoiding each and every 'gay stereotype' would be wrong too, because people would (rightfully) complain that Bioware is only willing to show gay characters if they 'look straight enough'.

When Dorian was announced as homosexual i thought, ok kool.

I've played female characters to romance male characters before examples being femshep and garrus, femhawke and Anders.

I do not feel as though i have been forced to play a sexuality to enjoy the game, rather i find the idea of playing as my first gay male character an interesting change to my usual characters.

The only difficulty i have with Dorian is what my inquisitor should be? Race? Mage or tempest?
:)

Zero problems with Dorian being gay. He will help me save Thedas, not force me to have sex with him.

So long as a character has depth and is well-rounded, I have no problem with stereotypes. Look at Orange is the New Black. Many of the women on that show fit stereotypes pertaining to their respective races, yet there's so much more to them.

not so much on BSN, but I heard about it outside of here.  It is probably like one or two people posting a comment about it on some popular website.  Honestly, Dorian will probably be my favorite mage.  So far I love the voice acting, he's apparent role in the story, and his style.  Then I found out he was purely gay, that didn't change my mind.  I have a few gay male friends and I treat them no different than my straight friends.  In fact, my wife and I met because we had a mutual friend who happened to be gay.

The problem was with the misconception of the marketing.

What Gaider said: The first fully gay character I've had the pleasure to write

What several gaming 'journalism' sites said: Bioware/Gaming's first fully gay character

What other websites thought they said: THE FIRST FULLY PANSEXUAL GAY MAN EVER IN FICTION

Which is kind of a shame, as not that much of Inquisition's marketing has been around that, it's just an easy criticism I guess.

why does a woman having short hair make her butch?

I said stereotypical butch hairstyle.

Obviously your hair style has nothing to do with your personality, but that's not how society works.

Other people have said it, but it's a classic double standard.

The lowest common denominator (straight male gamers, aka the traditional demographic, dudebros in many cases) are attracted to women. "Lesbians" (note the quotation marks) have been eroticized in porn and otherwise for ages, but the idea of two dudes together is not attractive to them. That's understandable since they like ladies, but what isn't is the double-standard and nastiness directed towards queer men. And for that matter, the way they treat lesbians is infuriating (to me) too because it's fetishizing somebody's identity, but we all know that most lesbians probably aren't interested in a guy. It's never about the lesbian's pleasure, it's about the straight viewer's voyeuristic pleasure, and I think it often crosses a line into creepy and objectifying. I don't really have a problem with straight people enjoying depictions of same-sex attraction/sex (I'm gay), but there's a point where it starts to bug me (particularly when their otherwise homophobic a-holes).

TL;DR: Basically, it's a combo of what is attractive to someone combined with sexism and homophobia. But remember, it's not really about the queer person - it's about the viewer's (typically dudebro) pleasure. I sometimes feel this way about some females fascination with gay men, particularly in manga/anime communities. Creeps me out.

There seem to be a lot of people that think this, yeah. I just try to remember this is BSN and these people do not represent the LGBT 'community' in any way, shape or form.

I don't know why it's the shortness that people are picking up on... the fact that she badly cut her fringe with a knife is a pretty good sign she cares very little for her appearance (despite the fact she is beautiful) Its another one of them lesbian stereotypes.

True.

However I find it funny that these threads on sexual equality regarding video games  and, there characters turn into an attack/demonization on straight male gamers. People be clowning while championing equality.  There be cognitive cognitive dissonance a foot!

In this particular issue it's group within straight male gamers who have problem that there is gay character in the game. It doesn't mean every straight male gamer is like that but the issue is still within that group, that's just how it is. At least I haven't seen any female gamers or queer one's having problem of having gay character in the game, it's pretty much opposite, though they have their own things to complain about too.

Because Gaider mentioned it in one of the character Q&As so the gaming "press" decided to use it for some clickbait.

Left a bad taste in the mouths of those not following the game and made them think that BioWare was trying to sell the game on Homosexual characters.

I was slightly unhappy with the fact that Dorian was not available for female Inquisitors and Sera for male Inquisitors but I have gotten over that now.

If only.

Every time there seems to be a thread about gay rights, some people automaticalyl assume we're hating on straight people.

It's like those people who think feminism means you hate males.

No. There are plenty of straight male gamers (I know a few myself) that do not do these things. I'm talking on a societal level here; as a group, they tend to act certain ways because of a combo of privilege and socialization (aka they're taught to act that way). They aren't inherently bad as individuals. It's a bit like racism. Just because not all white people are racist does not mean that, going by the systematic, big picture view, white people haven't been and tend to be racist as a group.

There seem to be a lot of people that think this, yeah. I just try to remember this is BSN and these people do not represent the LGBT 'community' in any way, shape or form.

I don't think that, but I think that there are an awful lot of straight males that are.

Um...well, no one person can represent an entire community. I represent a part of that community, but not the whole.

Why were you unhappy about both of those but not unhappy that Blackwall isn't available for male inquisitors and cass isn't available for female ones?

Because of stereotypes...or something?
