Their is a pretty simple reason as to why Leliana comes back. You supposedly killed her in a room full of magic capable of curing anything. In other words she got better.

In addition I suspect if you don't desecrate the ashes, that Leliana is the reason they later disappear.  But that is just conjecture.

Can't Leliana also die in camp after that decision though? And in lothering if you don't recruit her?

I don't go into Cullen Fan threads. I know I have no friends there. This thread ask why he remains in the series even with various choices made during. I know to stay out of Fan threads of characters I hate. This isn't a fan thread.

@ wiccame - Again, I'm not complaining. If they want to tell his story, that's fine. I don't disagree that there is a story there. He has shown potential to have a good story over the course of the previous two games having both the best and worst both sides of the mage/Templar conflict have to offer. That by itself doesn't necessarily indicate that a character will come back, however. There are other characters that could also fill that void with stories that could be told. In this case, in this game, it's simply Cullen's turn to have his story told.

Out of curiosity, what characters do you actually like?

Actually the OP doesn't seem to be asking why he remains in the series despite choices, just asking IF he's the only character who shows up in all three games no matter what. So this isn't a fan thread or a hate thread it's a "list the characters that show up in all 3 games because I'm curious how many there are" thread.

But Op I think if Bodhen and Sandal show up (which I don't know if that will happen, didn't the VA of sandal say he hasn't done any for inquisition?) then it's Cullen as the only one who absolutely has to show up in all 3. Even Leliana can be missed in Origins.

I don't have a favorite character. Not since origin anyway. Considering each DA game takes place with  new cast I don't pick favorites...but I'd say shale if I had to pick.

*note to self: Killdren88 does not like anyone, except the pigeon-slaughtering golem- do not expect soft, squishy feelings from this one* OK, got it :P

Never said I disliked the other characters. Sten gave me a good laugh with his dry humor. And I expect a good amount of laughs from Sera as well. Still doesn't make them my favored characters.

The continuity problem with Anders is less about him supposedly dying at the end of Awakening than if you hand over to Rylock and he never becomes a Warden. He...goes and joins the Orlesian Wardens after the Fereldan Warden-Commander handed him over to the templars? That seems unlikely.

Yes exactly what I was thinking. I was thinking about DAI and it just popped into my head after a long day that Cullen was in all three games regardless of where you go, you cannot miss him and as you said I wondered who else fitted this description because it piqued my curiosity.

I'd also forgotten you could miss Leilana out at Lothering, I've never done it myself but as soon as i read your comment I realised it would be quite easy.

So on a related note does that mean Alistair, Morrigan and Oghren are the only companions you cannot miss out?

If you checked the wiki, the DAO slides are said to be rumours...and yes those include Cullens slides. You could also read (yes you could) the entry in the wiki for Cullen.

Leliana and Anders are the most immersion breaking of the returning characters. Anders and Justice could have been very far apart when Anders died. Leliana could have died in DAO storyline. Both characters appear in DA2 with no really good explanation. Whereas Alistair only appears if alive either as warden or king.

I notice how people slam Cullen for an event that officially doesn't happen, yet also tend to say they liked Zevran (killer for hire), Sten (Qunari who murdered a family in a fit of pique over a lost sword) and Morrigan (who is quite happy for you to annul the circle), hypercritical much?

Anyway I will let pragmatism rule in DAI, the enemy of my enemy and all that, just remember the enemy is the Evil One.

Truth be told, distance in the Thedas is probably not the same thing as distance in the Fade, especially when one is a spirit and can probably get around there pretty fast I think.

You can't miss Wynne or Zevran either, because Wynne is met on a main quest you must complete to finish the game, and Zevran comes to you on his own. You can miss out on recruiting them, but you can choose not to recruit Oghren at all too. The only ones in DAO you absolutely must recruit, like it or not, are Morrigan and Alistair.

How do you not recruit Ohgren?

I've tried numerous times to give him a miss but I always seem to end up with him. I assumed he was a lock because you have to take him on the Branka quest

I think you can tell him to go stuff himself.

I don't think there's a way around Oghren for the Anvil quest, but you can get rid of him after that.

Don't you have to have oghren as a companion until after you deal with Branka?

Sure you can tell him to go away once his quest is done but you can also tell Morrigan to leave like a minute after you get her, so if Oghren doesn't count she doesn't either.

True, I was thinking more that Morrigan comes back to you anyway in the end, so you can never really get rid of her for good. But you're right, she does fall under the same circumstances as Oghren. I guess the only one you really really can't miss out on recruiting for the majority of the game is Alistair. And even then, only to a certain point, you can lose him too eventually. You just can't end the game completely alone, whichever way you go.

Even Dog is missable if you're not a human noble. Poor Ser Barkspawn, why would anyone kill or send him away. -_-

Not me, I even do the Wilds Flower quest when I'm human noble

I played an Elven Mage and it was hard to miss; I think the Kennel Master hailed me down or something, can't remember; I just recall going "WE'RE NOT LEAVING UNTIL WE GET ALL THE FLOWERS FOR THIS DOG.".

I'm not even a dog person, and I still can't be beastly enough to leave dog ... or kill him. :(

You could say that Cullen is evolving or, like a calf, they're fattening him up for the slaughter ...

This IS BioWare, you know, and they did just let him become a LI. I'd say he's in danger.

I agree with this, never let down your guard :"/

I don't know if it's related but I know a lot of peoples "evil" warden runs are human nobles

I wonder if that's because then no matter how evil you are, you don't get the option to kill your own dog
